Espèces animales nocturnes de Malaisie

Nocturnal Animals from Malaysia

I have already mentioned, through previous Malaysian stamp issues, the rich flora and fauna of this country. It's therefore not surprising to find new animal species on stamps this year !
The Malaysian Post has chosen 6 nocturnal animal species : four on single stamps and two on a souvenir sheet.
Below, you can see the pretty FDC issued on March 13, 2008 composed with these four single stamps. Thank you Eddie for thinking of me :-)

The RM1 stamp, in the lower right, represents a Flying Fox (Pteropus vampyrus), the largest bat species in the world (1.7 m-wide, weighing 1 kg when adult). This frugivorous species is found throughout Southeast Asia. Able to travel 50 km in a single night, it's an essential link in the pollination of plant species.
The 30 sen stamp in the upper right shows a Malay badger (Mydaus javanensis), a small carnivorous mammal (38 cm) of the family of skunks (and not badgers !) originating from Indonesia, Brunei and Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak States). Its anal glands secrete a repulsive odor when it feels threatened...

The other 30 sen stamp, which appears also in duplicate on the other FDC above (Thanks Kkkhor !), represents a Moonrat (Echinosorex gymnurus), one of the largest insectivorous mammal in the world (1.5 kg). Solitary, strong odour, black and white fur, pointed snout, small eyes and ears, teeth adapted to crushing, this animal frequent forests and mangroves of the Malay Peninsula and Borneo.
Note on these 2 letters the funny "1st Day" cancellation representing a mouse (or a rat ?), which seems to smile ! Is it a wink to the new lunar year of the Rat in progress ?
These two postmarks come from philatelic offices of the State of Penang ("Pulau Pinang" in Malay) : one haves bizarrely only the name of this State and the other one the name of the Butterworth city.

The last 50 sen stamp, which appears in the upper left on the letter above (thanks Siew Lan !) represents a Golden Cat (Catopuma temminckii). Medium-sized cat, they often live in different habitats all over Southeast Asia. This species, whom behaviour is not very known in a wild state, is considered to be threatened.
The postage is completed with two stamps. The 40 sen one is a stamp of the fruits definitive set (issued for the 1st time in 1986 with a "40c" value and later "40 sen") representing rambutans. This series was replaced in 2005 by birds. The 30 sen stamp, issued on 31 December 2007, is one of the 6 values devoted to Garden flowers issued in the 14 States of the country. This stamp is the bougainvillea from Selangor State.
The classical cancellations are from the capital city Kuala Lumpur dated March 18, 2008.

Finally above, the beautiful souvenir sheet with two 2 RM and 3 RM stamps, from the same series about nocturnal animals.
The stamp on the left shows a Slow loris (Nycticebus coucang), an arboreal primate often lonely living in the rainforests throughout Southeast Asia.
The one on the right reprsents a Tarsier (Tarsius bancanus), a carnivorous characteristic species with its large eyes that allow it to see in the dark and catch its preys (mainly insects). Species living in Indonesia, Brunei and Malaysia.
This M/S has a particularity : the eight eyes (2 animals on stamps and 2 in the top margin of the sheet) are covered by a phosphorescent layer and produce light in the dark ! A good idea of the Malaysian Post regarding the theme of this issue :-))
