Nouveaux FDC indiens - 1ère Partie

New FDC from India - Part I

I've received this last month five beautiful FDC from India. They have all been sent by S.S. Rath from the city of Bhubaneswar. Thank you very much :-)
I show you today two of them, franked with very nice miniature sheets.
Note that the sheets printed by India Post ("India Security Press" in Nasik, for example) have quite approximative perforations in the corners...

The first one below, issued on May 17, 2008, is composed of two stamps devoted to the Aga Khan Foundation, established in India for 30 years.
This Foundation is part of the AKDN ("Aga Khan Development Network") created by Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, the current imam of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims. AKDN is one of the largest private Foundations in the world, whose goal is to improve living conditions and contribute to economic development in the poorest countries.

The Aga Khan Foundation acts especially in social sectors (education, health, development aid...) as shown on the stamp on the right above.
The other stamp is devoted to another mission of this Foundation : the preservation of architectural Heritage. This stamp recalls that the Foundation has participated in the restoration of the Gardens of the Humayun Emperor's tomb, a Mughal-style complex built in 1570 in Delhi. This tomb, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993, is the first example of garden-tomb built on the Indian subcontinent. This construction has inspired later the architect of the Taj Mahal.

The 2nd FDC above concerns the joint issue of two stamps with China, issued on July 11, 2008, representing the white horse Temple, China and the Mahabodhi Temple, India.
Note that the two Chinese stamps, including the same illustrations, were curioulsy issued another day (June 6, 2008) ?
This issue aims to recall that Buddhism played a key role in the initiation of relations between the two countries.
The white horse Temple on the righte is a Buddhist monastic complex built in the year 68 in Luoyang, China. It was established, according to tradition, at the location where stopped, in the year 67, two Indian monks and a white horse carrying effigies of Buddha and 42 sutras, the first Buddhist texts arrived in China. These two monks arrived in China at the invitation of Emperor Ming, Han dynasty, after seeing in dream a gold deity flying over this place.
The complex of the Mahabodhi is one of the four holy places associated with the life of Buddha. It was built in the village of Bodh Gaya (State of Bihar) where Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment (Bodhi), and hence the state of Buddha, at the foot of a Pipal tree (or Bodhi tree). You can see some leaves of this tree contained in the background of this souvenir sheet.
The present temple dates from the fifth or sixth century and is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in India that is still standing, and one of the few temples of the late Gupta period built entirely in brick (54 meters high). It was inscribed on World Heritage List in 2002.
