Nouveaux FDC indiens - 2ème Partie

New FDC from India - Part II

As promised, I present to you today the 2nd part of the FDC received recently from India. Thank you very much S.S. Rath for these beautiful pieces mailed from Bhubaneswar :-)
Contrary to France where the places of the First Day issues are limited and directly related to the topic of the stamp, it seems that many Indian cities propose FDC cancellations... so Indian FDC's fans are very lucky !
Not so common to find foreign personalities depicted on stamps from India, here is an example below with a stamp devoted to Danish Henning Holck-Larsen (1907-2003).

The illustration on the cover and margins of the stamps evoke industry, civil engineering, transport, construction...some of the diverse interests of the Indian conglomerate Larsen & Toubro, the company created in 1938 in Mumbai by the two Danish engineers Larsen and S.K. Toubro.
The stamp, issued on June 12, 2008, commemorates therefore without doubt the 70 years since the foundation of this company, specialized in cement at the outset.
Larsen received many Danish and Indian awards (including civilian decoration Padma Bhushan) to welcome his influence in relations between Denmark and India but also in the Indian industry.
It should be noted that India Post has misspelled the name of the Danish at the bottom left corner on this FDC : Holk instead of Holck...

The second FDC above is devoted, through these two stamps issued on August 2, 2008, to the Aldabra Giant Tortoise, living in the Seychelles Islands. But what is the link with India ??
The Indian Post has wanted to evoke the history of Adwaitya, a Giant Tortoise male offered to the zoological garden of Kolkata in 1875. Until his death in 2006, this animal was famous for its longevity, some people claiming that he lived 250 years !
This species is the largest terrestrial turtle, up to 1.2 metres and weighing 300 kg for males. A vulnerable but not threatened species.

You've probably noticed the unusual hexagonal shape of these two stamps :-)
Considering the rough perforations of the indian stamps usually, it was a significant challenge for India Post...
These stamps are available in four sheets of 13 stamps with the same background : 13 x Rs5 stamps, 13 x Rs15 stamps, 5 x Rs5 stamps and 8 x 15Rs stamps (as on the sheet above), 5 x Rs15 stamps and 8 x 5Rs stamps.
The Indian Post has ensured that some stamps on these sheets can be extracted with triangular margins, givin to the stamp a shape of star !
I think these are the first Indian hexagonal stamps. France had also issued similar stamps in 2003 in a souvenir sheet celebrating 100 years of the "Tour de France" cycle race (the map of France is often associated with an hexagon). Some other countries ?

The last FDC above is devoted to the issue on July 21, 2008 of a stamp commemorating 250 years of the 14th battalion of the Punjab Regiment (Nabha Akal).
This battalion was formed in 1757 by the ruler of Nabha (northern region) to fight against Mughal troops. It has took part to the two World Wars (in Iraq and Italy) and has been incorporated into the Indian army in 1951 after independence. More recently, this battalion won fame in the unstable region of Jammu and Kashmir and also as part of the UN Peace keeping Force in Angola.
