Transport maritime à Taïwan

Taiwan's shipping industry

Merci beaucoup Wei-Yi :-)
Another very interesting "stamped" story today, from Taiwan this time !
This cover was sent to me from Kaohsiung on February 6 2009 by my friend Wei-Yi, who used an envelope with a header of his company, Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation.
This Taiwanese shipping company, founded in 1972, is based in Keeling and Wei-Yi is working in one of its many branches in Kaohsiung, the main port of the island.
Wei-Yi had the very good idea to frank his letter with postage stamps directly linked with this shipping industry, which represents a very important part in the Taiwan's economy and growth.
Thank you very much Wei-Yi :-)

Before describing these stamps, please note the two "F.D" (False Direction) postal marks affixed by the French Post in the city of Caluire, near Lyon, following a mistake in the zip code (69300 instead of 69003)...
These two stamps above right were issued on July 11 1984 to commemorate the 30th national navigation day. The NT$ 18.00 stamp depicts an oil tanker, the "Prosperity", and the NT$ 2.00 one represents a container vessel, the "YM Comfort" (formerly "Ming Comfort"), belonging to the Wei-Yi's Yang Ming company !

Wei-Yi has also sent me a copy (see above) of the certificate of vessel's nationality of the Republic of China (Taiwan) concerning the "YM Comfort" container ship, built in 1982 by the Kaohsiung China Shipbuilding Corp. company (now CSBC Taiwan Corp.).
You can read on this usefull certificate the different technical characteristics of this vessel, including the registration number (7943), the length (198 m.), the breadth (32 m.), the gross tonnage (29,872) or the net tonnage (10,586 )...

After serving for almost 30 years, this vessel has been dismantled, on January 20 2009 and sold to the Tortola island (part of the British Virgin Islands), as specified on the registry deletion certificate above, an act for which Wei -Yi was directly involved !
I like stamps that tell us interesting stories ! This letter is worth all the FDC of the world, often so impersonal :-)
To conclude, I'd like to mention the ATM stamp (NT$ 1.00) used to complete the franking of the letter above. It was issued as from December 15 2008 to celebrate the reopening and the normalization of direct cross-strait postal links, between Taiwan and mainland China. This link was interrupted since 1949.
This event appears to be another step in the normalization of their relations.
This ATM stamp, depicting two doves with a letter, is the first one to be directly printed in Taiwan. Machines have been installed across the island, some issuing also these stamps with the nominal value printed in green, blue or red...

Timbres polonais retirés de la circulation !

Merci beaucoup Kazimierz :-)
I've received several days ago the two FDC below from Poland. I think I had the good idea to wait a bit before publishing them as an amazing event occurred on February 24 2009 !
I'll explain it further.
This series of four stamps issued on January 30 2009, is very moving because it honors four Polish personalities who survived the Nazi concentration camps during the 2nd World War. It is entitled "Survived the destruction" ("Ocaleli z zagłady" in Polish).
Kazimierz thank you very much :-)

The stamp on the right above (2.10 zł) is at the origin of the decision taken on February 24 2009 by the Polish Post to withdraw from circulation all four stamps of this series...
This stamp honors Władysław Józef Wolski (1910-2008), historian and professor at the universities of Krakow, Wroclaw and Lodz.
He was arrested in November 1939 during the Nazi "Sonderaktion Krakau" operation against the Polish intellectual circles. 183 people were deported to the concentration camps of Sachsenhausen and Dachau. Władysław Józef Wolski was released in 1941 and worked again in 1946.
Due to a technical problem (?), the name included on this stamp is "Władysław Wolski" instead of "Władysław Józef Wolski", resulting in confusion as Władysław Wolski (1901-1976) was minister in the 50's years and linked with the Soviet security services...
Hence the withdrawal of this series, after a formal apology from the Polish Post...
The other stamp above on the left honors Witold Pilecka (1901-1948), Polish soldier resistance fighter, interned on its own in the concentration camp of Auschwitz in order to organize resistance and to testify of atrocities that were committed. He escapes in 1943 and took part in the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. He was imprisoned and then executed by the communists in 1948.

Above the other two stamps issued in this series.
It seems that the stamp on the left, paying tribute to Bishop Ignacy Ludwik Jeż (1914-2007), is also problematic because the term "bishop" was not included on the stamp...
He was a prisoner between 1942 and 1945 in the camp of Dachau and then liberated by U.S. forces. He was appointed bishop of Koszalin-Kołobrzeg from 1972 until 1992. He played a very important role in improving postwar relations between Germany and Poland.
A woman is also honored on the last stamp, Stanisława Maria Sawicka (1895-1982), historian of art and museologist who was prisoner in the camp of Ravensbrück (the largest concentration camp for women) in 1944.
It seems that stamps of this series with no mistake will be soon issued again. The corrected versions of the two stamps (2.10 and 2.40 zł) should also be issued...
This is a very good thing that these four new stamps will be in circulation soon as they honor the survivors and witnesses of the terrible conditions in the Nazi concentration camps.
Kazimierz thank you for thinking of me with these FDC concerning stamps that have officially circulated only during 24 days :-)

Mon 2ème courrier d'Arabie Saoudite

My 2nd cover from Saudi Arabia

Thank you Ganesh for this second cover from the Saudi kingdom :-)
Contrary to the previous one, the blue cancellation (very legible this time) from the Rakah post office in Al-Khobar on the east coast, includes a date in line with our Gregorian calendar (February 8, 2009)...
We will now travel in the west of Saudi Arabia thanks to the stamps below.
The small 2 riyals definitive stamp (what year of issue ?) represents the Kaaba located inside the Masjid al-Haram mosque in Mecca, the first holy site of Islam.
This almost cubic building (15 meters high), housing the famous "black stone" in a corner, is a symbol to which Muslims turn to pray.

Many Muslims coming for a pilgrimage to the holy places of Mecca (hajj) or Medina arrived in the kingdom through the port of Yanbu, on the east coast on the Red Sea.
This is this "King Fahd" port, occupying nearly 15 km of coastline, which is referred to on the other two identical stamps, issued in 2002. It is part of a set of two stamps, same illustration but with different background colors.
Yanbu, a small fishing port, was chosen in 1975 by the Saudi government to become a large industrial complex (oil refinery, petrochemical, plastic).
This city is far from the main Saudian gas or oil fields, that's why pipelines of more than 1300 km were built across the desert to deliver them until here.
This port is now the largest Saudian complex on the Red Sea for the export of hydrocarbons, but also the closer one from the European and North American markets...

Images de Nouvel An en Chine

New Year pictures in China

Merci beaucoup Zhou Fan :-)
For many centuries, Chinese artists are making some beautiful woodprints on the occasion of the New Year festivities. Each region has its own characteristics and the Chinese Post had the very good idea to issue at the beginning of each year since 2003 a special set of stamps celebrating the works of one of these regions.
After works from the regions of Yangliuqing in 2003, Taohuawu in 2004, Yangjiabu in 2005, Wuqiang in 2006, Mianzhu in 2007 and Zhuxian in 2008, a new set of four stamps was issued on January 18 2009 reproducing woodprints from Zhangzhou (Fujian Province).
These four stamps are included on the beautiful cover below mailed on the first day of issue from the city of Shanghai.
Zhou Fan thank you very much :-)

These unique works from Zhangzhou appeared for the first time during the Song dynasty (960-1279) and they have been developed in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) to reach their zenith during the Qing dynasty (1644-1911).
The printing technique used is woodcut (or xylography), using a tablet of wood as an image's fingerprint reproduced by stamping. The subjects represented are mainly devoted to the new year, the fight against evil spirits or Opera stories. The background of these works is often black, purple, white or red and characters with vivid colors.
This is the case for the four works reproduced on these four stamps above entitled from left to right : "Lion holding in mouth a sword", "The coming flood of wealth", "Goddess sending children" and "Rat marrying off its daughter".
4 These stamps were also gathered in an elegant souvenir sheet issued the same day.
These pictures are marketed throughout Southeast Asia, including Hong Kong and Taiwan where the local artists have been heavily influenced by the Zhangzhou New Year woodprints.

FDC d'Estonie

FDC from Estonia

Today, February 24th is an important day in Estonia, which commemorates the first declaration of independence on February 24 1918.
It's a hero of this Estonian War of Independence, General Johan Laidoner (1884-1953), who is honored on the stamp below, issued on February 12 2009.
The Post of Estonia is celebrating the 125th anniversary of his birth, in the Viljandi county, where was issued the FDC below. Another FDC cancellation was available in Tallinn, the capital.
Thank you very much Kristiina for this nice cover :-)

Johan Laidoner, then commander-in-chief of the Estonian armed forces, resisted the Red Army that was defeated in February 1919. German troops were withdrawn shortly before... After the end of the war of independence in 1920, he became member of parliament.
He will be appointed commander-in-chief for a 3rd time between 1934 and 1940, and promoted general in 1939. He was deported to Russia in 1940 after Estonia's occupation by Soviet troops. He died in prison in 1953.
This stamp was inspired by a vintage Laidoner's photograph represented next to a map of the country.
The decoration depicted on the left on this cover is the Cross of Liberty ("Vabadusrist" in Estonian), created in 1919 to honor heroes of this Estonian war of independence.
It is conferred in three divisions (I-military services, II-bravery in combat and III-civilian services) each composed of three levels.
The words mentioned at the top of this cover remind us that Laidoner received two Cross of Liberty : VR I/1 and VR III/1. It was probably not possible to receive the three divisions...
Kristiina added another EEK 3.60 stamp, issued on August 21 2000, part of the definitive series issued over several years, representing the country's coat of arms.

Courriers et FDC intéressants de Finlande

Attractive covers and FDC from Finland

Merci beaucoup Hannele :-)
2009 is a very important year in Finland as the country is commemorating the 200 years of the creation of an autonomous Grand Duchy under Russian sovereignty. This year 1809 will mark the beginning of a process leading Finland to independence in 1917.
Finland Post has of course commemorated this anniversary with the issue of a souvenir sheet of four stamps on January 22 2009. I will certainly speak about in the next post !
I will now evoke some other stamps issued since early 2009 by the Finnish Post, thanks to three beautiful official FDC attached to the last cover below sent to me by Hannele, mailed on February 17 2009 from Jyväskylä.
Thank you very much Hannele :-)

Hannele has chosen on her letter above a beautiful souvenir sheet of two stamps issued on November 2 2007, devoted to fine woodworks. It is actually a joint issue with Hong Kong, China, same paper, same printer (Joh. Enschedé) !
The stamp on the right shows six oval bowls carved in 2000 in curly birch (Betula pendula) by the Finnish artist Markku Kosonen (born in 1945).
The other stamp, designed by Ken Li, depicts a chair dating from the Qing Dynasty, carved in the rare red sandalwood (zitan), with a focus on the finely made back, inspired by a kuilong (a dragon-like creature), on the stamp's right part.

The first FDC above joined by Hannele is...very surprising !
Issued on January 22 2009 (as the two others below), it consists in five self-adhesive water drop-shaped stamps, or rather drop of happiness according to the Finnish post :-)
They are in fact some Greetings stamps : love (Valentine's day) with these two swans embracing, this teddy bear hugging a heart or this Cupid shooting an arrow. The last two stamps depicting a cake and a group of friends could be used for a birthday...
The designer of this sheet, Janine Rewell, has wisely chosen a shiny silver background, making it even more festive ! well done !
These stamps remind me another stamp issued in 2008 by Lithuania, also drop-shaped, to announce the International Expo in Zaragoza, Spain...

The € 0.80 stamp above was issued to salute the great work and dedication of hospital staff in the country. The two nurses represented performing care, are taken from a picture part of collections of the Turku Lazaret hospital Museum, founded in 1759. The different coloured bubbles symbolize the passing of time and the development of care treatments.
I really love the stethoscope-shaped FDC cancellation !

The stamp above is the first of a new series of Finland Post, covering different seasons, devoted to the national parks of the country.
This one reproduces a beautiful mountainous landscape ("tunturi" is the Finnish word designating this kind of typical rounded relief) of the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park located in Lapland, in northwestern Finland. This Park, created in 2005, is the 3rd largest in the country and one of the most visited.
This series is not ready to be ended because there are 35 national parks in Finland covering a total area of 8000 km2 (2.5% of country's total area) !
This stamp depicts the exact location of this park on a map of Finland with its name written in three different languages : Finnish, Swedish and Sami (Lappish).
To conclude, the nominal value of the stamp (1 LK/KL) is mentioned in Braille, as regularly on Finnish stamps... This may explain why Finland Post hasn't scheduled any specific stamp this year devoted to the Louis Braille's bicentennial.

Hockey et Année du buffle au Canada

Hockey and Year of the Ox in Canada

Ice hockey is born in the late 19th century in Canada, this is probably what Garnet wanted to remind me with this postcard below franked with three stamps in connection with this team sport.
Thank you very much Garnet :-)

The stamp in the upper left (43c) was issued on April 16 1993 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Stanley Cup (1893-1993), the oldest and most popular sport's trophy in North America. This silver cup was originally created to reward the best Canadian amateur hockey team. Since then, the professional clubs in Canada and the U.S. are fighting every year to win this precious trophy...

This Stanley Cup became in 1926 the exclusive property of the National Hockey League (NHL) in the spotlight on the other stamp in the upper right, part of a series of three stamps issued on October 9 1992 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of its creation in 1917. This stamp is about the early years (1917-1942) of this League, the other two stamps covering the periods 1942-1967 (the six-team years) and 1968-1992 (the expansion years). It depicts some early hockey artifacts (puck, stick and pair of goalie skates) and the player from the Montreal Maroons, Babe Siebert.
The last small self-adhesive stamp ($ 1.65, international rate) was issued on January 12 2009, among a series of five stamps representing emblems and mascots, to announce the upcoming 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in Vancouver, Canada Post being the official supplier of these games.
The stamp shows one of the three olympic mascots, Quatchi, a sasquatch (a kind of Yeti) as a ice hockey goal keeper. Top right on the stamp is included the official logo of these games representing an inukshuk, a traditional Inuit sculpture used as a benchmark for travelers.
These three mascots (with Miga and Sumi) are some imaginary creatures inspired by First Nation legends of the Canadian west coast. These five stamps were also issued in booklets of 6 stamps, in rolls of 100 and 50 stamps and combined in a very nice souvenir sheet.

On January 7 1997, Canada Post issued its first stamp devoted to the new Chinese lunar year of the Ox. 12 years later, a new cycle has started with two new stamps issued on January 8 2009 about this same year of the Ox. They are included, unfortunately not canceled, on this 2nd postcard above.
These two stamps bring many technical prowess : gold foil, metallic clear foil and multi-level embossing... The result is just beautiful !
Through the ochre mountains and plum flowers on the permanent rate stamp and the pottery (a work by the potter from Vancouver, Shu-Hwei Kao) on the international rate ($ 1.65) stamp, Canada Post wanted to remind that we're celebrating since January 26 2009 the year of the Earth Ox.
This last stamp was issued in an elegant souvenir sheet with a unique scroll-like design.
A period of stability, harmony and balance is scheduled this year for those born under this zodiac sign...

2 nouvelles lettres slovaques

Two new Slovak covers

The topic for the EUROPA stamps issued in 1999 was the "nature parks and reserves".
The Slovak post had issued on May 5 1999, two se-tenant stamps showing a panoramic view of the High Tatras ("Vysoké Tatry" in Slovak), in the massif of the same name at the border between Poland and Slovakia.
These two stamps are included on the cover below mailed on February 9 2009 from Bratislava.
Robert thank you very much :-)
This chain of mountains, classed as a "Biosphere Reserve" by UNESCO, has 11 peaks over 2500 meters, including the Gerlachovský štít, the highest point of Slovakia (2655 m), on only 26 km !

I really love these two stamps, engraved by the excellent Martin Činovský, reminding me another panoramic view composed of three stamps (Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau) issued by the Swiss Post in 2006...
The High Tatras are part of the Tatra National Park (738 km²), one of nine National Parks in Slovakia, with a rare flora and fauna, including edelweiss, brown bear, lynx, marmot and an endemic species of chamois, that appears on the logo of this National Park included in the top margin of the mini sheets of eight stamps issued, like the one on the letter above.
The small stamp on the left, issued on April 18 2002, is part of the definitive series devoted to Slovak towns, Levoča (in the Prešov region, northeastern Slovakia) in our case.
The old town hall and the St. Jacob Church are depicted on this stamp.
Fyi, the EUROPA stamp issued by France in 1999 was devoted to the Camargue Natural Park.

The two stamp above issued on June 23 2006, are part of the annual series representing some unique treasures in the collections of Museums in Slovakia.
The Sk 31.00 stamp is devoted to the copper art, produced and exported from the city of Banská Bystrica since the 14th century. The object shown on this stamp is a pot dating from 1576 that was used as a measure of capacity in Banská Bystrica, whose arms are on the pot.
This rare copper piece is kept in the Central Slovakia Museum in the same city.
The other stamp is dedicated to the glass production with this drinking glass (blue cobalt) dating from the 16th century discovered during excavations in Bratislava. At that time, these glass objects were often directly imported from Venice or manufactured in Slovakia by Venetian artists. This drinking glass is kept in the Slovak Glass Museum of Lednické Rovne.

Jubilé d'argent du Sultan de Perak

Silver Jubilee of the Sultan of Perak

The Post of Malaysia regularly issues some series of stamps in honor of the rulers, Sultans for the most part, leading the states of the federation of Malaysia.
On February 3 2009, it's the Sultan of the state of Perak, His Royal Highness Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Yusuff Izzuddin Shah Ghafarullahu-Lah (whew !), who is celebrated on the occasion of the 25 years (Silver Jubilee) of his reign.
The three stamps below were issued in his honor.
Thank you very much Kkkhor for this beautiful FDC below, with cancellations from the Philatelic Bureau of Kuala Kangsar, the royal capital of the state of Perak, where is located the royal palace, Istana Iskandariah :-)

Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah (born in 1928), lawyer by profession, was proclaimed 34th Sultan of Perak on February 3 1984, but his official installation took place on December 9 1985, what is depicted on the 30 sen stamp's background, to the left of the Sultan's portrait.
He was also elected 9th Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King of Malaysia) from 1989 to 1994, among the 9 rulers of the Malay states, elected kings in turn.
The 50 sen stamp represents the splendid Ubudiah mosque (built in 1917), one of the great tourist sites of Perak, reminding that the Sultan of Perak is also the head of the state islamic religion and custom.
The last stamp (1 RM) shows a portrait of the royal couple with Tuanku Bainun, the Raja Permaisuri Perak, the official title of the wife of the Sultan of Perak.

Hommage à la reine Marie en Roumanie

A tribute to Queen Marie in Romania

On July 15 2008, the Romanian Post issued a set of two stamps to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the death of Queen Marie of Romania (1875-1938).
These two stamps, which are part of the Romanian Postage Stamp Day ("Ziua Mărcii Poştale Româneşti"), are included on the nice FDC below.
Laszlo thank you very much for this cover mailed on February 8 2009 from Bucharest, the Romanian capital :-)
The Post of Romania has done better (or worst ?) that the French Post during this Stamp Day since these two stamps were declined in a miniature sheet (with the two different stamps), in sheets of 16 stamps of each, and in mini-sheets of 8 stamps of each with a central vignette !

Marie of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, originally a member of the British royal family, married in 1893 Ferdinand of Hohenzollern, Crown Prince of Romania.
Marie became Queen of Romania when Ferdinand I throned in 1914, although the coronation will take place only in 1922, after the 1st World War.
Queen Mary became very popular during this war through her work with the Red Cross, some said that, in the facts, she actually ruled Romania, then occupied by German troops...
She was the participant for Romania in 1919 at the Treaty of Versailles, which will see her dream of unified Romania come true.
Marie died in 1938 while his son Carol II was king. The Kingdom of Romania will give way to the Romanian People's Republic proclaimed by the communists on December 30 1947...

I Ching, Pa Kua à Macao

I Ching, Pa Kua in Macau

I'm very happy to show you this second letter received from Macau !
Kevin thank you very much for this interesting cover mailed on February 4 2009 from the Tradic post office, which seems to be the Mail processing and delivering Center of this Chinese special administrative region (SAR) :-)
The ATM stamp on the left, issued in 2006, was already included on my first cover received from Macau. The message written on this vignette is to encourage energy saving.

The two stamps on the right are part of a series of eight stamps and one souvenir sheet, issued on March 1 2008, devoted to the mysterious I-Ching, or "Book of Changes", that have more than 5000 years.
The I-Ching would be the basis for Confucianism or Taoism in China.
It contains much of the wisdom of Chinese prophets who, after observing the changes in our universe, were able to derive some conclusions about the events of our daily lives.
This book is based on 8 trigrams consisting of 3 superimposed full (yang) or broken (yin) lines, each symbolizing an element, a direction, a person and a season to interpret the meaning of life. This method is called Pa Kua.
These trigrams are doubled into 64 different hexagrams allowing to interpret the events and predict the future.
The two stamps above are depicting two of these 64 hexagrams, Wei Yi (drought) on the left and Huan (floods) on the right, hence their hexagonal shape !
This series, started in 2001, is the 6th series of 8 stamps devoted to these 64 hexagrams. So two other series are expected to be issued to complete this Pa Kua !

These trigrams are also very important for the practice of Fengshui.
I also show you above the other side of this letter including this blue postmark with the words "Macau 2009" and the facade of the ECAP ("Estacao Central para Atendimento do Publico") building.

Louis Braille à nouveau à l'honneur

Louis Braille again in the spotlight

After my posts published this weekend, here is another stamp in honor of Louis Braille on this nice cover received from Algeria.
Omar thank you very much for this letter nicely illustrated with a FDC cancellation of January 4 2009, the exact date of the birth of the French inventor 200 years ago :-)
This FDC postmark issued in Tlemcen (north-western Algeria) depicts the first 3 letters of the Latin alphabet in Braille while the first 8 letters appear on this stamp (not embossed), under the portrait of Braille.
Note the two other red more conventional postmarks from Imama, a district (?) of Tlemcen, dated 26 January 2009.

Ali Kerbouche, the designer of this stamp, seems to have been inspired by a photograph (a daguerreotype) taken shortly after his death, for his portrait of Louis Braille on this stamp.
After devoting his life to improve the blind's conditions and particularly the communication between sighted and blind persons, Louis Braille died in 1852 of tuberculosis. He was buried in àCoupvray, his native village near Paris.
100 years later, his body was transferred to the Pantheon, where are buried the great figures of French history.
To be noted that Italy (which hasn't scheduled any stamp about Louis Braille...) and Belgium have already planed the issue of a € 2 coin commemorating the 200 years of his birth.
The other two stamps on the letter were issued on June 10 2008 to commemorate 10 years of the painter Baya's death. I already mentioned these two stamps in a previous post devoted to the nice souvenir sheet issued on this occasion.

Braille et astronomie en Corée du sud

Braille and Astronomy in Korea

As announced in my post yesterday, many postal administrations have already issued a commemorative stamp dedicated to the bicentennial of the birth of Louis Braille (1809-1852).
This is the case in Korea with the stamp in duplicate below issued on January 2 2009.
Kim thank you very much for this interesting FDC about this great French inventor, benefactor of the blind and visually impaired :-)
The Korean Post has chosen a classic picture with a profile portrait of Louis Braille and a Braille sentence (with no raised dots) that could be translated into English by : "The world seen by hands".

To be noted that there is a Braille system specifically adapted to the Korean language and its different Hangul alphabet's patterns, which seems so complicated !
The portrait of Louis Braille on the stamp and on the FDC cancellation was inspired by a 1840 bust of the Valentin Haüy Museum in Paris, devoted to visual impairment. It allows me to speak about Valentin Haüy (1745-1822), another major benefactor for blind people, who was one of the first in France to be interested in the future and the social and cultural integration of the blind. He founded the first school for the blind in Paris in 1786, which later became the National Institute for blind children, in which Louis Braille was one of the brightest students !

2009 has been declared "International Year of Astronomy" by the United Nations and UNESCO, following the proposal of the International Astronomical Union.
The theme of this year's commemorations is "The Universe : yours to discover". Nearly 140 countries are participating in this event whose main purpose is to stimulate public interest in astronomy and sciences of the universe.
The year 2009 was chosen because it coincides with the 400th anniversary of the first use of an astronomical telescope by Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) in 1609.
Galileo Galilei, the famous Italian astronomer and physicist, was born on February 15 1564, 445 years ago, to the very day !
The Korean Post has issued on this occasion, on January 15 2009, the two se-tenant stamps above, issued in mini-sheets of 16 stamps (8 of each).
The stamp on the left depicts the Planetary Nebula NGC 3132 (discovered in 1835) located 2,000 light years from Earth, as has been observed by the Hubble telescope. These Nebulae, which may recall the outline of a planet, consist of clouds of gases formed by certain types of stars when they die.
The other stamp represents the Whirlpool Galaxy M51, located 31 million light-years from Earth. Discovered in 1773, it was named after its two arms spiral's shape.
Astronomy has been chosen this year to be the topic for the EUROPA stamps, so I'll speak about again very soon !

La diplomatie du panda...

The Panda diplomacy...

How to stay unmoved with these new stamps issued on January 20 2009 (year 98 on the island) by the Post of Taiwan ?
This set is moreover right entitled "cute animals".
I am therefore pleased, with the stamps included on the two covers below, to introduce you Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan, the two 4 years old giant pandas (called "bear cat" in Chinese) that are the pride of the zoo of Taipei since the end of December 2008 !
Thank you very much ShChin and Cheng for these two very touching letters :-)

I've entitled this article "Panda diplomacy" because it's the term used to describe the China's practice consisting in offering giant pandas to another country, as a friendship gift, to develop or restore relations with that country.
After a first refusal by Taiwan in 2006, and following the change of president on the island, these two Pandas, ambassadors of good will, leaved their native Chinese province of Sichuan to reach Taipei at the end of 2008.
One can imagine the ulterior motive (and the controversies that go with...) linked to this act of the People's Republic of China towards Taiwan but it can also be seen as a gesture of peace and a way to ease tensions from each side of the strait.
To be noted on the FDC above the two different postmarks, a FDC cancellation and another commemorative cancellation (what is written on it ?) that also appears on the cover below.

This issue also points out that the giant panda remains a very rare and endangered animal in the wild. This endemic species to China lives only in a few areas of the province of Sichuan and in Qinling Mountains in the province of Shaanxi.
Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan (Tuan Yuan means "gathering") appear together this time on the NT$ 25.00 stamp included in the souvenir sheet above as part of this same "cute animal" set. They are represented in front of bamboo shoots that are nearly 95% of their diet.
These two black and white animals, fruit of a political act, are in any case today the delight of children in Taiwan !

Nouvelle lettre de Slovénie

A new cover from Slovenia

Bonne Saint-Valentin !
As at the beginning of each year, the Slovenian Post has issued on January 30 2009, a new series of stamps with national costumes, folklore and love as themes !
These three stamps are included on the nice cover below mailed on February 5 2009 from Ljubljana.
Thank you very much Petra :-)
Like the French Post, its Slovenian counterpart has taken the habit of issuing each year a heart-shaped stamp, as the one on the right below.
This low value's stamp, was issued in order to send to relatives an imaginary kiss with these two fish in love...
Slovenia seems to be the only country in the world to have the word "love" included in its name, what the Slovenian Post had the good idea to remind on this stamp :-)
Happy Valentine's Day !

The stamp in the middle (€ 1.60) is devoted to the "Šelma" carnival costumes from Kostanjevica na Krki, a village in the region of Lower Carniola, in south-eastern Slovenia (near the Croatian border).
As illustrated on the stamp, this carnival is characterized by these pumpkins with burning candles inside, that the people dressed up walking in the streets.
In the 19th century, this pumpkin was worn by the Father "Šelma", also called "Father of rogues". During these festivities, from Carnival Sunday to Ash Wednesday, the Euro is replaced by another currency, the "chestnut"...
The last stamp on the left is depicting a wedding-festive costume, dating from the early 19th century, from the village of Poljanska dolina ob Kolpi, in the region of Bela Krajina (White Carniola) also located in the south-eastern Slovenia. The stamp represents the bride in the center with the standard-bearer of the nuptial procession on the left and the bridesmaid from behind, on the right.
This stamp is inspired by one of the 48 watercolors, representing different costumes, painted in 1838 by F. K. Goldenstein, today kept at the Ethnographic Museum of Ljubljana.

A suivre...
As often, Petra was once again kind enough to join her letter the FDC above, also issued on January 30 2009 :-)
You'll probably find by yourself that this souvenir sheet commemorates the 200th anniversary of the birth of Frenchman Louis Braille (1809-1852), inventor of the world-wide reading and writing Braille system used by blind and visually impaired people. Braille, who became blind at the age of 3 after an accident, invented the tactile system consisting of 6 dots, after having adapted and simplified the previous Barbier's system that was then based on 12 dots. This system allows people writing letters, numbers, punctuation, musical notes. The first book in Braille was published in 1827.
I love this very playful miniature sheet issued by the Slovenian post with this stamp depicting a human eye with its nominal value in Braille (€ 2.38).
Among the many stamps issued for several years in the world, including words or values in Braille, it seems to me that this is the first time that a postal administration shall issue a stamp with Braille characters of different colors, right ?
The margins of this sheet refer to different symbols in Braille, letters, numbers and punctuation, common to most of the alphabets in the world. Note that the Slovenian post also included in the margin on the right three letters (Č, Š, Ž) used in the Slovenian alphabet, that have a different meaning in the French alphabet (â, û, è)...
The FDC cancellation above includes the words "Louis Braille" in Braille.
Louis Braille will certainly be the Frenchman the most evoked on worldwide stamps in 2009 !
Louis Braille was born on January 4, so many countries have already issued a commemorative stamp, often with a mention in Braille and his portrait : Algeria, France, Korea, Brazil, Poland, Czech Republic, Aruba, Andorra, Belarus, India , Montenegro, Morocco, Belgium...
Other countries have been more imaginative, like Slovenia or Ireland.
Other issues to follow : Spain, Slovakia...
Some postal administrations (Moldova) have only issued a postal stationery for the moment.
To be continued...
