Année Haydn en Autriche

Haydn Year in Austria

200 years ago, one of the greatest classical composers, the Austrian Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) died in Vienna.
2009 has been declared Haydn Year in Austria to pay tribute to this composer who marked his time as Mozart and Beethoven, for his joviality and the great diversity of his works.
The Austrian Post has of course celebrated this national (and international !) event by issuing on 31th of March 2009 a € 0.65 commemorative stamp.
This stamp depicts a portrait of Joseph Haydn, a detail from a painting by Ludwig Guttenbrunn (1770).
Thank you very much Florian for this beautiful FDC below with a FDC cancellation from the town of Eisenstadt (Burgenland) in eastern Austria :-)

Eisenstadt is not the Haydn's birthplace, but it's the city where he was invited in 1761 by the family of Esterhazy Princes, conquered by his first compositions, "string quartets" in particular.
He will stay here nearly 30 years, with a Chapel master contract, in the Esterháza castle and its opera and full orchestra. During this period he produced a very fertile and popular work : nearly a hundred operas ("Lo Speziale", "L'infedelta delusa", "Orlando paladino...), a masterpiece of sacred music ("Stabat Mater"), several symphonies ("Farewell Symphony"...).
Haydn met Mozart in 1784, they became friends very quickly.
Haydn then moved to Vienna from 1791 and make many trips to London, where he composed his so-called "London" symphonies and its "Military Symphony" which was a huge success. Inspired by Haendel (we also celebrate the 250th anniversary of his death in 2009), he composed in 1798 his famous oratorio "The Creation".
Haydn, very ill, died in 1809 in Vienna. His body was transferred to Eisenstadt in 1820.
The Postal administrations of Belgium, Macedonia and Hungary have also scheduled a stamp in his honor in their 2009 stamp program.
