Année Polaire Internationale à Monaco

International Polar Year in Monaco

The Principality of Monaco and its postal administration, the Stamp Issuing Office of Monaco (OETP), was the only foreign country to have a stand at the "Salon Philatélique de Printemps" held in Mâcon last weekend.
I'll speak about my visit to this exhibition with more details tomorrow :-)
At this occasion, the OETP has issued a special postmark with a view of the city of Mâcon from the banks of the Saône river. This cancellation is included in the upper left part on the cover below.
The Monegasque Post was kind enough to send me this letter on 1st of April 2009, franked with a nice triptych issued as part of the International Polar Year (issued on 19th of December 2008).

Prince Albert II of Monaco, with his commitment to preserve the environment, was conducted in April 2006 an expedition to North Pole (Arctic), with dog sleds on the trail of Prince Albert I who began the most fruitful of his four Arctic exploration campaigns in Svalbard, 100 years earlier.
A stamp had been issued at this occasion on 10th of April 2006.
The triptych (3 x €0.85) above commemorates this time the second expedition of Albert II in Antarctica, started on 5th of January 2009, in order to draw attention to the state of the ice field and the changes resulting from pollution and climate warming.
For 17 days, the Prince crossed the continent from west to east, visiting many international scientific bases.
This expedition also aimed to point out that Monaco had become, on 31th of May 2008, the 47th state party to the Antarctic Treaty.
It also had two goals : to urge public to reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases, to promote scientific research in the polar regions and to recall that the Antarctic is a natural reserve devoted to peace and science.
Prince Albert I and Albert II are depicted on the two stamps above on the left and right. The stamp in the middle represents the logo of the International Polar Year and the national flag of Monaco (not to be confused with the Indonesian flag...).
Finally, a self-adhesive vignette, issued in sheet of 10, is included in the bottom left on this letter. It depicts the same design as a stamp issued on 7th of February 2009, announcing the International Philatelic Exhibition "MonacoPhil 2009" held in December 2009 on the rock.
