Contes de fée en Croatie

Croatian fairy world

After 2005 and 2007, the Croatian Post has issued on 27th of February 2009, a new set of two stamps dedicated to Croatian fairy tales characters.
Thank you very much Dragan for this beautiful cover with three copies of each of these two stamps, mailed on 27th of March 2009 from Rijeka :-)
These two kn 1.65 stamps, designed by the painter Sanja Rešček from the Academy of Arts in Zagreb (she also designed the four previous stamps), have been issued in a single sheet of 20 stamps (10 of each).
The two characters in the spotlight this year, Svarožić and Bjesomar, are born from the imagination of the Croatian writer for children, Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić (1874-1938).

Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić published her first book in 1913, entitled "The Marvellous Adventures and Misadventures of Hlapić the Apprentice" ("Čudnovate zgode i nezgode šegrta Hlapića"). Her most important book is "Tales of long ago" ("Priče iz davnine") published in 1916.
Her two characters, Svarožić and Bjesomar, are present in her book "Potjeh" telling the story of a grandfather and his three grandsons, who need to choose between the Good (Svarožić) and Evil (Bjesomar).
Svarožić proclaims the truth and promotes remembrance while Bjesomar is doing everything to impose oblivion. One appears as a young sun made of golden light when the other is stripped of description, referred only as a kind of fog in the distance...
The designs of these two stamps are really close to these descriptions !

Dragan was kind enough to include in his letter, the philatelic souvenir above issued in connection with the preview sale (on June 15, 1993) of the stamp devoted to the 12th Mediterranean Games which were held in June 1993 in France, in the Languedoc-Roussillon region.
These Games are held every four years and now include 23 countries around the Mediterranean. The next Games will take place at the end of June 2009 in Pescara, Italy.
The Croatian Post wanted, with the issue of this stamp, to celebrate the first participation of Croatia at these Games, Croatian athletes competing under the colors of Yugoslavia in the previous editions.
But this philatelic souvenir was especially issued to honor one of the greatest Croatian basketball players, Dražen Petrović, who died in a car accident 10 days before the opening of these Games...
The stamp above is franked with the special cancellation issued on 16th of June 1993 in his honor. This postmark includes three rings, the symbol of the Mediterranean Games.

Your blog is realy intreresting. Thank you for showing us all the nice covers and stamps!

But I have a question: Why the letter "M" is written on so many covers you show here (for example also on this one)?

Eric Contesse a dit…

thanks for your comment :-)
This is a very good question ! and I'm not totally sure concerning the answer...I suppose that this "M" letter allows to my local post office to gather together the covers by districts in Lyon, my city...
