Protection des pôles et des glaciers - 24ème Partie

Preserve the Polar Regions and Glaciers - Part XXIV

I'm very happy to share with you today the 24th cover received on the theme of the "Protection of the Polar Regions and Glaciers" !
As a reminder, this International Philatelic campaign was initiated by the Chile and Finland and a quarantine of postal administrations have issued stamps devoted to this topic, with a common insignia : a stylized ice crystal.
I'm doubly pleased because this letter below is the first one received from Peru !
Thank you very much Cesar for this cover mailed from the port city of Chimbote :-)
Note that no sending date seems to be included on the small postmarks ??

Serpost, the Peruvian postal administration, has therefore issued on January 15th 2009 the nice souvenir sheet of four stamps above (total print run : 75,000, including the year 2008...).
A stamp is depicting the logo of the "International Polar Year 2007-2008".
The top two stamps evoke the Antarctic continent, one of the two polar regions the most affected by the effects of global warming, with a photograph of an icefield and the flag of Peru probably hoisted in the "Machu Picchu" research station opened since 1989 on King George Island (located 120 km from the Antarctic Peninsula).
The last stamp of this sheet, lower right, depicts the glacier Quelcayya (Cusco, southern Peru), the largest tropical icecap in the world that retreats of about 60 meters per year...
In Peru, where are located 70% of the tropical glaciers of the world (in the White Cordillera particularly), the Andes have lost at least 22% of their ice surface since 1970 !
In short or medium-term, the water supply of the arid coast of Peru (where most of the population is living) could be threatened...

Bonsoir Eric,
