Série EUROPA 2009 de Slovénie

EUROPA 2009 stamps from Slovenia

The many events organized in Slovenia as part of the International Year of Astronomy are placed under the auspices of the President of the Republic, Dr. Danilo Türk.
The Post of Slovenia has also commemorated this International Year with its EUROPA series of two stamps (€ 0.45 and € 0.92), issued on May 29th 2009.
These two stamps are included in the upper right part on the beautiful cover below mailed on June 22th 2009 from Ljubljana. Thank you very much Petra :-)
The edge of sheet to the left of the € 0.92 stamp depicts the logos of UNESCO and IAU (International Astronomical Union), recalling that these two institutions have declared the year 2009 as International Year of Astronomy.

The € 0.92 EUROPA stamp commemorates the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Astronomical and Geophysical Observatory Golovec in Ljubljana, the first worthy of this name's Observatory in Slovenia.
The € 0.45 EUROPA stamp is dedicated to the discovery of the "C/2008 Q1 Matičič" comet on the night of August 18th 2008 at the observatory of Črni Vrh. This comet was named after its discoverer, Stanislav Matičič, 60-cm telescope Cichocki.
It was the very first time that a comet was discovered during observations in Slovenia. It was worth issuing a stamp !
This stamp, inspired by the official logo of the International Year of Astronomy, depicts the relative positions of this comet and also of the sun and planets Mercury, Earth and Mars, when it was discovered in August 2008. This stamp reminds me of the EUROPA stamp issued this year by Switzerland, which also shows the position in the sky of the asteroid Helvetia when the stamp was issued...
The other two stamps on the letter above have also been issued on May 29th 2009. The € 0.70 stamp is part of the multi-year series devoted to Slavic (and Slovenian in particular) mythology. It depicts a werewolf ("Volkodlak" in Slovenian), this human who has the ability to transform into a wolf... These werewolves are feared, in the Slovenian tradition, around the winter solstice, at a new moon or on the 7th day of the week.
The last stamp (€ 0.92) commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Jazz Festival in Ljubljana, one of the oldest festivals of its kind in Europe. The first edition was indeed held in 1959 in Bled.
The 50th edition took place from June 29th to July 4th 2009 at the Cankarjev dom in Ljubljana. The stamp reproduces the logo of this anniversary with drumsticks knocking on a heart.
