Trésors du Musée National du Palais à Taïwan

Treasures from the National Palace Museum in Taiwan

With this new splendid cover from Taiwan, we can admire again some old paintings kept in the National Palace Museum in Taipei, one of the most important Museums in the world (Chinese calligraphy, bronzes, jades, ceramics, paintings...).
Thank you very much Wei Yi for this letter mailed on June 24th 2009 from Kaohsiung, a port city which is currently hosting the 8th World Games.
The two stamps in the top right (NT$ 5.00 and 19.00), issued on March 20th 1998, reproduce some parts of a painting by Liu Kuan-tao (Yuan Dynasty : 1271-1368) showing the Mongol emperor Kublai Khan (Shi-tzu) during a hunting expedition.

This work is very fragile and is exposed to the public only a few days each year.
The NT$ 9.00 stamp in the upper right is part of a series of four stamps issued on March 7th 2008 to announce the 21st Asian International Philatelic Exhibition "Taipei 2008". These four stamps reproduce ancient Chinese paintings featuring birds, including the one above showing a peacock and apricot and peony blossoms (by Lu Chi, Ming dynasty).
The four NT$ 5.00 stamps in the upper left are part of a beautiful souvenir sheet of 10 stamps (two horizontal bands of 5 stamps) issued on September 21th 2007, reproducing a work ("Eighteen scholars of the Tang Dynasty") painted by Emperor Hui-tsung (1082-1135, Sung Dynasty), himself a great painter and calligrapher.
I've finally already mentioned on this blog the last four stamps in the bottom left, part of a souvenir sheet of 8 stamps issued on July 16th 2008, reproducing the painting "A Hundred Deer" (Cing Dynasty).

Wei Yi was kind enough to include in his letter the three FDC above and below issued on October 10th 2003 by the postal administration of São Tomé and Príncipe, an archipelago located 350 km off the coast of Gabon.
São Tomé and Príncipe is one of the four African countries having official diplomatic relations with Taiwan and this series of stamps was celebrating the 6th anniversary of this relationship.
The sheet of four stamps above mentioned the cooperation between the two countries, in particular in the medical and agricultural fields.

The 2nd souvenir sheet above also refers to the cooperation between the two states with some infrastructure probably financed or co-financed by Taiwan : a cinema, the national library, a covered market and the road between Neves and Santa Catarina ( on São Tomé Island).

The last souvenir sheet above is depicting a meeting between the President of the Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe, Fradique de Menezes (since 2001) and the former president of Taiwan, Chen Shui-bian (2000-2008).
I really like this fancy series because it reconciles us with the São Tomé and Príncipe's Philately, sadly famous for its excessive stamps issues having absolutely no link with the country...
