Marins à l'honneur aux USA

Distinguished American sailors

The U.S. Navy Memorial in Washington hosted on February 4, 2010, the preview sale of a new series of the USPS dedicated to distinguished sailors of the U.S. Navy who have particularly demonstrated war acts of bravery during the 20th century.
Each of the four stamps at 44c features a portrait of a sailor as well as the ship's flag (
destroyer escort for most of them) that have been named after the soldier.
This series, and its typical American patriotic style, is included on the nice letter below, posted on February 18, 2010 in Etowah (North Carolina). Thank you very much Jean-Claude :-)
William S. Sims (1858-1936) was commander of U.S. naval forces in Europe during World War I. He has contributed to the reform, modernization and numerous innovations in the U.S. Navy, particularly on gun fire techniques.
Sims' photograph dates from 1919 on this stamp on which is also depicted the crest of the USS Sims, commissioned in 1970.

Arleigh A. Burke (1901-1996) was one of the most brilliant destroyer commanders during the 2nd World War. He also played an important role in modernizing the US Navy after the war in particular as Chief of Naval Operations when he developed programs of construction of nuclear-powered submarines and ballistic missile.

John McCloy (1876-1945) was one of the few American sailors to receive two Medals of Honor for his acts of courage and bravery during both the Boxer Rebellion and the Mexican revolt in 1914. He also received the Navy Cross in 1919 as commander of the USS Curlew engaged in minesweeping in the North Sea after World War I.
The stamp is based on a photograph from 1920 with the crest of the destroyer USS McCloy commissioned in 1963.
Doris Miller (1919-1943) is considered as the first black American hero of World War II, particularly for his bravery at Pearl Harbor in December 1941, aboard the battleship West Virginia. Promoted officer on June 1943 aboard the new aircraft carrier escort Liscom Bay, he died in action on November 1943 with 600 shipmates when a torpedo sank the ship during the invasion of the Gilbert Islands. His body was never found.
