Basilique d'Orcival en France

Basilica Our Lady of Orcival in France

During the last long weekend of the Ascension (from 13 to 16 May 2010) took place the "first day" sale of a new engraved stamp issued by the French Post, devoted to a jewel of Romanesque art in Auvergne region, the Basilica Our Lady of the Irons, located in the small village of Orcival (department of Puy-de-Dome).
I was very lucky to receive the souvenir below, with this new postage stamp and its FDC cancellation, both designed by the French artist Marie-Noëlle Goffin.
A big thank you to Christine Gallois, from the communications department of La Poste :-)

This basilica, Historic Monument since 1840, was built in volcanic rocks in the 12th century on a site where a pilgrimage already existed since the 6th century, in honor of Our Lady of the Irons.
With its very pure and homogeneous style, this basilica is one of the major Romanesque religious buildings from Auvergne with the Basilica Notre-Dame-du-Port at Clermont-Ferrand (stamp issued in 1947), the Church of St. Austremonius at Issoire (stamp issued in 1973), the Basilica of Saint-Saturnin (stamp issued in 1978) or the Cathedral of Le Puy-en-Velay (stamp issued in 1980).

With this short movie above (only in French sorry...), very well done, you will learn much more about this building and about the genesis and design of this stamp, through the story of Marie-Noëlle Goffin, of the Phil@poste staff from Perigueux and of different local personalities :-)

Christine Gallois has also been kind enough to send me the other philatelic document above on which was also affixed the stamp, the FDC postmark, and the signature of Marie-Noëlle Goffin (bottom right of the stamp) !
This Basilica is famous for its statue of Our Lady of the Irons also dating from the 12th century, 75 cm high, carved in walnut tree with silver and silver gilt adornments. It's this statue that is featured on the FDC cancellation.
This Virgin is called Our Lady of the Irons as many prisoners who prayed for her had been miraculously released. On the walls of the south transept, irons, balls and chains have been suspended as a votive offering in testimony and in gratitude to the Virgin by prisoners released...

A preview sale of this stamp was also held in Paris (Carré d'Encre) from 13 to 15 May 2010. With the same postmark but with the words "Paris" instead of "63 Orcival".
Thank you very much Roland for this nice cover above :-)
But what a pity that this letter has been sabotaged with this hand postmark "PIC PARIS NORD - 95504 GONESSE CX"...
To be almost complete, at each side of the bell tower of the Basilica on this stamp, Marie Noëlle Goffin has chosen to include two characteristic symbols of this building : a sundial surmounted by the Virgin of Our Lady of the Irons and a cross made from mosaics adorning one of the walls of the church.
