Train et reine Victoria en Australie

Railway and Queen Victoria in Australia

On May 7, 2010, Australia Post has issued a nice set of four stamps dedicated to great Australian railway journeys. Some (Indian Pacific, The Ghan) are crossing this vast country from east to west and from north to south, and some others are much shorter and more scenic, as the West Coast Wilderness railway (Tasmania) or the Kuranda scenic railway (Queensland).
This is this Kuranda line that is evoked on the beautiful souvenir sheet on the cover below, posted on May 13th 2010 from the city of Geelong, the second largest city of the State of Victoria, south-eastern Australia. Thank you very much Ben :-)
It seems that the postman didn't dare to cancel directly the souvenir sheet !

This Kuranda scenic railway built in the late 19th century, connecting the Freshwater (near Cairns) and Kuranda stations, is today a great tourist attraction in Queensland (north-eastern Australia). This train crosses indeed an impressive rainforest with many tunnels or bridges, such as the iron bridge featured on this stamp, with the Stoney Creek waterfalls in the background. A white dot in the lower left margin of this sheet allows to locate this bridge on this railway's route.
The upper margin of this sheet shows a spectacular view of Mount Whitfield and the towns of Lake Placid and Kamerunga.

The same day, Australia Post has issued a very nice minisheet (mixed offset/intaglio printing) entitled "Colonial Heritage - Empire" consisting of a $ 5.00 stamp reproducing the portrait of Queen Victoria used on the first stamps issued respectively by Tasmania (Van Diemen's Land) from 1855 and Queensland from 1860.
Thank you Ben for this very interesting FDC above :-)
This souvenir sheet is actually the first of a series of four issued each year until 2013, when Australia will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the issue of the first stamp ("Kangaroo and Map") with the word "Australia" (issued on January 2, 1913).
The portrait of Queen Victoria reproduced above was called "Chalon head", in reference to the portrait painted by Alfred Chalon in 1837, representing the young queen in her coronation robes, which had inspired this stamp...
This painting, now part of the Belgium's Royal Collection, is reproduced in the right margin on this minisheet.
Finally, it's worth noting that the two miniature sheets above were also issued with a surcharge representing the logo of the "London 2010" international stamp exhibition.
