Famous Croats

The Croatian Post is issuing every year a set of stamps devoted to great figures of Croatian culture, politics...
Two stamps part of the series of four stamps issued in 2009 (on April 22) are included on the right on the nice letter below, posted on May 6, 2010 from the city of Virovitica in north-eastern Croatia. Thank you very much Josip :-)
Juraj Šižgorić (1445-1509), latinist poet and humanist from Šibenik, was one of the most important personalities in the cultural and historic life of the 15th century in Croatia. He is well-known for having benn the first Croatian poet to publish in Venice a book entitled "Elegiarum et carminum libri tres" in 1477...

The second stamp in this series above is featuring a portrait of Ljudevit Gaj (1809-1872), a Croatian politician, linguist, journalist and writer. Gaj was a leading figure of the movement of national revival in Croatia ("Illyrian Movement").
His book "Kratka osnova horvatsko-slavenskog pravopisanja" ("Brief Basics of the Croatian-Slavonic Orthography") published in 1830, the first book of Croatian spelling using the Latin alphabet, made him famous throughout Croatia. He made a deal in 1835 with the Habsburg to print the first daily newspaper in Croatian language.
Josip has completed his postage with a stamp (1 kn), part of the beautiful (and colorful) series of five stamps issued on September 30, 2008, devoted to ethnographic heritage of Croatia. This stamp depicts a thick weave of dark earthen colour, typical from the region of Ravni Kotari (Northern Dalmatia).

The Croatian Post is also issuing each year several prepaid postcards (valid for a domestic use). The postcard above, issued on March 26, 2010, is dedicated to the 250th anniversary (celebrated in 2009) of the municipality of Mali Bukovec, located in northern country.
