50 ans de Brasilia au Brésil

50 years of Brasilia in Brazil

Merci beaucoup Marcelo :-)

50 years after (to the day), the Brazilian Post has issued a series of six beautiful stamps, entitled "Brasilia - Dreams and Realities - Monuments and Architecture" devoted to the main buildings and monuments of Brasilia.
I was lucky to receive the three nice covers below, postmarked June 28, 2010 in São Paulo, each franked with two stamps of this series and with a FDC cancellation dated April 21, 2010.
Thank you very much Marcelo :-)

This "Brasilia in colors" series reproduces some original works by artist Julia dos Santos Baptista who was inspired by the colors of the landscape of Brasilia : ochre from Cerrado, shades of red, blue sky, gray concrete...
Urban planner Lucio Costa has designed the city plan and the architect Oscar Niemeyer has imagined the main administrative or religious buildings. Niemeyer has also designed the Memorial Juscelino Kubitschek, inaugurated in 1981, appearing on the stamp above on the left but also on the FDC cancellation.
The other stamp above on the right (and the illustration on the envelope) evokes the sculpture "The Pioneers of the Cerrado" by Bruno Giorgi, located on the square of the Three Powers.

Two of the main religious buildings of Brasilia are featured above.
The Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lady of the Apparition (consecrated in 1970), a famous work by Oscar Niemeyer with its structure of 70 meters in diameter and its 16 columns symbolizing two hands reaching toward the sky, is depicted on the stamp on the right.
The other stamp evokes the Chapel of Our Lady of Fatima, also known as "Igrejinha", another work by Niemeyer, inspired by the veil of a nun. At the request of the wife of President Kubitschek, it was the first church built in Brasilia.

The stamp above on the left evokes the two towers (H-shaped as "Humanity") housing the administrative services of the National Congress of Brazil. Also designed by Oscar Niemeyer, this Congress is also composed of two other buildings : a convex and a concave semi-sphere housing respectively the federal Senate and the Chamber of Deputies.
The other stamp evokes a sculpture located near the southern facade of the Palace of Dawn ("Palácio da Alvorada"), designed by Niemeyer, inaugurated in 1958. This Palace is the official residence of the Presidents of Brazil.
Brasilia has been listed by UNESCO on its World Heritage List in 1987.
