Année Sainte Compostellane en Espagne

Jubilee Year of Compostela in Spain

This Sunday, July 25th is a very special day for Catholics who are celebrating the feast day of the apostle St. James.
According to Christian tradition, the tomb of St. James would be located at Compostela in Galicia, even if there is no evidence about this fact for some historians...
The pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela thus developed from the Middle Ages and a multitude of ways were created across Europe in order that pilgrims walk to Galicia.
The year 2010 is special because July 25th falls on a Sunday and is therefore considered, since the 12th century, as "Jubilee Year of Compostela" ("Ano Santo Xacobeo" in Galician). The next year of this kind will happen only in 2021...

The Spanish Post has commemorated this "Jubilee Year of Compostela" by issuing, on May 13, 2010, the stamp above on the right featuring a pilgrim facing the facade of the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
Thank you very much Josep for this letter posted on July 19, 2010 in Barcelona :-)
The second stamp, issued on February 22, 2010, is part of a set of two stamps issued to announce the Spanish Presidency of the European Union (from January 1 to June 30, 2010). It was the fourth time that Spain hold the rotating presidency since its UE accession in 1986.
This stamp is depicting the logo of the Spanish Presidency, the two letters "eu" in yellow and red colors. To note that the same logo (designed by the Belgian Antoine Durieux), with different colors, is used by the current Belgian presidency and will be also used by the Hungarian presidency in the first half of 2011...
