Indépendances sud-américaines en France

South American independences in France

After the 50th anniversary of African independences (former French colonies), the French Post has issued a new stamp, on general sale on November 29, 2010, this time devoted to the bicentenary of the Latin American and the Caribbean independences.
This stamp (unscheduled initially, issued on a proposal from the former Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner), the last French stamp issued this year, was issued in preview sale in Paris (November 27) and Boulogne-sur-Mer (27 and 28 November) where two different FDC cancellations were offered to the public.
Boulogne-sur-Mer is the city where the Argentine General José de San Martín, a hero of South American independence with Simon Bolivar, died in 1850.

I was lucky to receive the FDC souvenir from Paris above with a postmark featuring the design of the stamp : a map of Central and South America (including the Galapagos and Falkland islands !) and the Caribbean.
Thank you very much Roland :-)
It was indeed in 1810 that an important process of emancipation from Spanish colonial domination spread in Latin America and the Caribbean, largely influenced by the American War of Independence, the French Revolution and the Age of Enlightenment (as evoked on this stamp through the books by Rousseau, Diderot and Voltaire included in the lower left part).
It is from 1810 that the independence of Latin American countries will happen one after another through major figures such as Simon Bolivar, Francisco Miranda, José de San Martín, Antonio José Sucre, Miguel Hidalgo or Bernardo O'Higgins...
