50 ans du 1er vol spatial habité en Moldavie

50th Anniversary of Human Space Flight in Moldova

Merci beaucoup Sergio :-)
Many former Soviet Republics (Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, Russia, Ukraine...) have already logically commemorated this year the 50th anniversary of the first manned space flight.
On April 12, 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968) was indeed the first man sent into space on board the capsule Vostok 1.
The Post of Moldova has also issued, on April 9, 2011, an interesting souvenir sheet (4 stamps + 2 vignettes) devoted to this anniversary, to the first four men sent into space in 1961 to be precise.
This sheet is included to the right on this splendid registered letter sent from Chişinău on April 12, 2011. Thank you very much Sergio :-)

The L 1.20 stamp is obviously paying tribute to Yuri Gagarin, who became an international icon after completing a full orbit around the Earth on April 12, 1961. USSR went one step further regarding the United States in the race to conquer space.
Sergio had the good idea to use to the left on his letter the stamp (L 1.80), issued on April 12, 2001 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Gagarin's historic flight. The other stamp in the upper left, issued on May 14, 2001, celebrated the 20th anniversary of the spaceflight by Romanian Dumitru Prunariu.
The first American in space, on May 5, 1961, was the astronaut Alan Shepard (L 8.50 stamp) aboard a Mercury-Redstone 3 space capsule, during a sub-orbital flight of 15 minutes only...
American Virgil Grissom followed on July 21, 1961 (L 7.00 stamp) and then the other Soviet Gherman Titov on August 6, 1961 (L 5.40 stamp) who stayed, on board his capsule Vostok 2, more than a day in space (17 orbits around the Earth).

At this occasion, the Post of Moldova has also put into circulation the maxicard above (printing run : 600 copies) devoted to this historic flight of Yuri Gagarin.
You can see the stamp part of the miniature sheet above and also a portrait of Gagarin and evocations of his triumphant return to earth (newspapers, parade in Moscow).
To note the interesting postmark (different from the FDC cancellation) on this card and also on the letter above, also featuring a portrait of cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin and mentioning the 50th anniversary of the first manned space flight.
On April 7, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly declared April 12th as the International Day of Human Space Flight, in tribute to Gagarin's first flight. The Moldovan Post has also issued, on April 12, 2011, another special cancellation to commemorate this International Day (it also appears on the letter above, representing space capsule Vostok 1).
