Philatélie, environnement et JO aux EAU

Philately, Environment and Olympics in UAE

Coinciding with the 25th meeting of the heads of the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) postal administrations held in Abu Dhabi, the Post of the United Arab Emirates (Emirates Post) organized in the same city, from 4 to 9 April 2011, the 17th GCC Postage Stamps Exhibition.
GCC is a regional organization composed of six members : UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait.
A special stamp (150 Fils, below to the right) was issued for this occasion, on April 4, 2011, featuring a falcon (the national symbol) with the number 17 in the background with colors of the UAE's flag (white, black, green and red).
Thank you very much Ganesh for this interesting FDC with postmark from Dubai :-)

Ganesh has used two other stamps on this letter sent on July 20, 2011, including the green stamp (1 AED), issued on March 31, 2011, devoted to the protection of natural heritage and in particular of the Ghaf Tree (Prosopis cineraria).
This tree, threatened with extinction, is an emblematic plant species of the Arabian desert and of the country's history. To note that a souvenir sheet (sold 40 AED for a nominal value of 5 AED !) was also issued the same day, consisting of two stamps with one including a seed of this tree.
The last stamp above to the left (3 AED), issued on July 17, 2007, pays tribute to Sheikh Ahmed Mohammed Hasher Al Maktoum, the first UAE's athlete to win an Olympic medal at the Athens olympic games in 2004 !
Ahmed Al Maktoum indeed became Olympic champion in shooting, in the men's double trap event. To note that the medal on this stamp (printed by Joh. Enschedé) is covered with a golden varnish !
