Grande Outarde sur nouveau bloc slovaque

Great Bustard on new Slovak sheet

Merci beaucoup Robert :-)
In its new series "Nature conservation", the postal administration of Slovakia has issued on October 14, 2011, a special stamp (€ 1.10) devoted to the Great Bustard (Otis tarda).
It is this stamp, designed and engraved by Rudolf Cigánik, that appears on the cover below, mailed on October 17, 2011 from the city of Trnava.
Thank you very much Robert :-)

The Great Bustard is considered as the heaviest flying bird species in the country (up to 22 kg), growing up to more than one meter, with a wing span of up to 2.5 meters.
There are two subspecies of this bird, including one living in Europe from the Iberian Peninsula (where nearly 75% of the population lives) to Siberia.
The number of these birds living in Central Europe began to decline sharply from the 1970s, mainly due to agricultural intensification, construction of roads or power lines. Only 5 to 10 females were observed in Slovakia in the 1990s...
Thanks to the nature protection efforts and the help of farmers, this bird is building again nests in the country, in the Danube lowland, in the two protection areas of Lehnice and Sysl'ovské polia.
