Hommage à B. Benkhedda en Algérie

A tribute to B. Benkhedda in Algeria

On September 21, 2011, the Algerian Post has issued on general sale a commemorative stamp (15 Dinars) devoted to Benyoucef Benkhedda (1920-2003), 2nd president of the Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic from 1961 to 1962 when the country declared its independence.
It is this stamp, with a rather outdated style, that appears in two copies on the nice illustrated cover below mailed on September 21, 2011 from Tlemcen.
Thank you very much Omar :-)

To note also the FDC cancellation from Tlemcen. It would be great if the Algerian Post was able to use some more original FDC postmarks, always with the same design...
Omar has had the good idea to reproduce on his letter to the left a photograph of Benyoucef Benkhedda that inspired S.A. Bentounes for the design of this stamp.
This photograph shows Benkhedda, on March 19, 1962, during the proclamation of the cease-fire on the Tunisian national radio.

Benkhedda, a pharmacist, joined the PPA (Algerian People's Party) in 1942 before being arrested and tortured in 1943 for propaganda against the mobilization of Algerians to combat in Germany, during the French occupation...
He was again arrested in 1954 in the aftermath of the uprising before joining the FLN (National Liberation Front) a year later.
After the assassination of Ben M'hidi, hero of the War of Independence, Benkhedda left Algeria to Tunisia and took part to several FLN delegations abroad.
On July 3, 1962, the day of the official recognition of the independence of Algeria by France, he received a hero's welcome in Algiers.
Benkhedda militated until his death for the defense of human rights and for an independent and democratic Algerian state.
