Scientifiques américains - Premier Jour

American Scientists FDC

On June 16, 2011, the USPS has issued its third series devoted to distinguished American Scientists, in preview sale at the Science Museum of Minnesota in St. Paul.
It is this set of four "Forever" permanent stamps (first class domestic letter, currently 44c) that appears on this interesting FDC below.
Thank you very much Bob :-)

The stamp to the left pays tribute to the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1961, Melvin Calvin, the first scientist to trace the process of photosynthesis and to have conducted research on energy sources from plants.
To note that we commemorate this year the 100th anniversary of the birth of Melvin Calvin.

The following stamp is dedicated to botanist Asa Gray, the principal advocate in the United States of Darwin's evolutionary theory in the mid 19th century.
Maria Goeppert Mayer
, honored on the third stamp above, was only the second woman (after Marie Curie) to receive the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1963 for her works on the modeling of the atomic nucleus.
The last stamp to the right is devoted to the biochemist Severo Ochoa (Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1959), the first scientist to have synthesized ribonucleic acid (RNA), a molecule very close to DNA, and to have contributed to the deciphering of human genetic code.
To note that Severo Ochoa, born in Spain and naturalized American in 1956, has already been featured on two Spanish stamps issued in 1994 and 2003 (joint issue with Sweden)...
