Série oiseaux 2011 sur FDC letton

Bird series 2011 on Latvian FDC

After the European Roller and the Eagle-owl in 2010, the Latvian Post has issued on September 23, 2011, the second part of its series devoted to birds of the country.
This new series consists of two stamps (designed once again by Ģirts Grīva !) appears on the very nice FDC below with two different FDC cancellations from Riga. Thank you very much Juris :-)
According to the Latvian Post, no other country in the world had previously depicted on a stamp the passerine bird featured on the 0.35 Lats stamp (printing run : 800,000), the Icterine Warbler (Hippolais icterina L.) !

The Icterine Warbler, a small insectivorous bird, can be observed in Latvia from early spring to fall, mainly near water.
The second stamp at 0.98 Lats (the cost of mailing a registered letter within Latvia), with a print run of 300,000, depicts a species of bird of prey, the Short-toed Snake Eagle (Circaetus gallicus L.).
This large bird of prey with a 1.70 to 1.85 wingspan, is mainly hunting reptiles and snakes in particular, hence its English name. This species is found in the eastern regions of Latvia.
