Splendides orchidées à Singapour - Premier Jour

A beautiful Orchids FDC from Singapore

From 14 to 23 November 2011, Singapore (Marina Bay) has hosted the 20th edition of the "World Orchid Conference" (WOC), an international conference devoted to orchids. To note that Singapore had already organized in 1963 the fourth edition of this floral event organized every three years since 1954.
Singapore was certainly chosen for having been in the past one of the most important producers of orchids for commerce in the world and for being currently still an important marketplace for orchids from both the east and west.

The SingPost has devoted to this international conference a beautiful set of 5 stamps + 1 souvenir sheet (designed by Nicodemus Loh), issued on November 12, 2011.
Thank you very much Terence for the colorful official registered FDC above with the five stamps of this series :-)
Among the orchids chosen for this set : the inevitable Vanda Miss Joaquim (Singapore's national flower since 1981), the Renanthera (the official flower of this conference), Grammatophyllum speciosum (the largest orchid in the world, also called "Tiger Orchid") or Dendrobium World Peace (an hybrid flower commemorating the 50th anniversary of the United Nations in 1995).
The next (21st) edition of this WOC will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2014 and the 22nd edition should be organized in 2017 in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

Expo 2010 de Shanghai - bloc spécial en Azerbaïdjan

Shanghai Expo 2010 - a special m/s from Azerbaijan

On May 18, 2010, the Post of Azerbaijan has issued a special souvenir sheet dedicated to the country's participation at the Expo Shanghai 2010.
It's that sheet, composed of a 60 qəpik stamp (print run : 20,000), that appears on the nice registered letter below, posted in Baku on November 3, 2011.
Thank you very much Mahir :-)
The margins of the sheet show a view of the modern district of Pudong from the Bund, on the west bank of the Huangpu River. To note the logo of this Expo at the top right.

The stamp depicts the emblem (referring to the colors of national flag) that appeared on the pavilion of Azerbaijan in Shanghai, whose theme was "At the crossroads between East and West".
This pavilion allowed visitors to experience the lifestyle of the people of Azerbaijan through multimedia, crafts, photographs about the history, culture and religion of the country, located on the Silk Road, between Asia and Europe.
A description of Azerbaijani towns and villages was also presented at this Expo having for slogan "Better City, Better Life".

Mahir has also used four stamps on the other side of this cover above.
The two identical 60 qəpik stamps (print run : 100,000), issued on November 5, 2010, commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Academician Sh. Mehdiyev that seems to have devoted his works to oil exploration according to this stamp's background...
The other two stamps (20 qəpik) are part of a set of two stamps, issued on March 10, 2011, featuring flowers from the autonomous region of Nagorno-Karabakh (a species of blueberry "Centaurea ficher" here), inhabited mostly by Armenians and internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan...

Découverte de l'insuline - Premier Jour

In 1921, the two Canadian scientists Frederick Banting and Charles Best discovered insulin, basing their work on an experiment by Oskar Minkowski in 1889, highlighting the role of the pancreas in the pathology of diabetes and its regulatory role in the rate of glucose in the human body.
Banting and Best received, in 1923, the Nobel Prize in Medicine for this discovery, which now allows people with diabetes (350 million worldwide) to have a better life (through insulin synthesis injections).

On November 18, 2011, the French Post has issued in general sale a special stamp (€ 0.60) devoted to the 90th anniversary of the discovery of insulin.
This stamp, designed by Stéphanie Ghinéa (print run : 2,000,000), was issued in preview sale on November 17, 2011 in Paris (at the "Carré d'Encre" and at the French Association of people with diabetes) and in Caen (at the North West district pole).
It is that stamp that appears on the FDC souvenir above made at the "Carré d'Encre". Thank you very much Joël :-)

I was lucky to receive the second First Day Cover above issued this time in the city of Caen (Normandy). Thank you very much Stéphane :-)
To note that the FDC cancellation, rather successful, was also designed by Stéphanie Ghina.
Unfortunately, this letter has once again been sabotaged with the application of this ugly mechanical cancellation at its passage through a mail processing center (CTC No. 21618A) of Caen :((
I don't know if some other postal administrations have also commemorated this 90th anniversary ?

Nouvelles lettres postées le 11.11.11 !

New covers mailed on 11.11.11 !

I'm rather surprised by the excitement generated by this famous date of 11.11.11, particularly on social networks where many stamp and cover collectors wished to receive letters posted that day...
It was not particularly my case although I'm happy to share with you these four special letters below !

As in previous years, the Austrian Post has called upon the former Bishop Dr Reinhold Stecher to design the new Advent stamp, issued on November 11, 2011.
It's that stamp (€ 0.70) that appears on the nice FDC souvenir above mailed in the town of Sellrain where took place the St. Gabriel stamp exhibition. Thank you very much Edna :-)
This stamp depicts the little chapel of St. Quirinus, located at an altitude of 1243 m on the northern side of the Sellrain Valley, near Innsbruck.

The second letter above was posted on 11.11.11 in the city of Chania, on the Crete Island. Thank you very much Spyros :-)
Spyros has again used a stamp issued by the monastic republic of Mount Athos ("Agion Oros") occupying a mountainous peninsula located in the northeast of Greece.
This stamp (€ 0.80) is part of a series of five stamps, issued on September 17, 2009, devoted to different aspects of everyday life on Mount Athos, shipbuilding here.

Another example of cover mailed on 11.11.11 above, this time coming from the little German town (Land of Bavaria) of Höchstädt an der Donau.
Thank you very much Franz :-)
I've already written about the stamp (€ 0.55) above issued this year, dedicated to different inventions (including MP3) patented in Germany.

Luis had already sent me the FDC above, issued on May 9, 2011, devoted to the set of three EUROPA stamps (Portugal, Azores, Madeira) issued by the the Portuguese Post.
This new FDC above, arrived at the Lyon's mail sorting center on November 15, 2011 (see the hand postmark above), includes a registered sticker dated 11.11.11 with an additional postage of € 1.03 (issued in Braga).

Rép. Tchèque - lettre et entiers postaux

Czech Rep. - New Cover and Postal Stationeries

A big thank you again Bret for this nice registered letter, mailed from Prague on November 8, 2011, as well as the interesting prepaid postcards published in this post :-)
The stamp to the left (Kč 10.00), issued on January 2, 2009, commemorates the 200th anniversary of the birth of French Louis Braille (1809-1852), inventor of the Braille reading and writing system made up of raised dots used by blind and visually impaired.
I had already largely discussed this issue in 2009 since many postal administrations had issued stamps dedicated to Louis Braille, including some with Braille parts (France, Andorra, Cyprus, India, Vatican, Luxembourg, Spain...).

I have also mentioned in a previous post the beautiful souvenir sheet above (designed by Jan Kavan and engraved by Václav Fajt), issued on March 10, 2010, devoted to the bicentenary of the birth of the great Czech Romantic poet Karel Hynek Mácha (1810-1836).
The stamp of this sheet features a portrait of the poet seeming to contemplate the Bezděz region (northern country) and its Gothic castle in particular. This region has indeed heavily inspired Karel Hynek Mácha (and also the composer Smetana).
The Lake depicted in the margin at the top left was beside named after him !

Bret was kind enough to attach to his letter the numbered commemorative sheet above, including a special date stamp, issued by the main post office in Prague on November 10, 2011, the Day of Czech Philately ("Den České Filatelie").
I really like this cancellation, designed by Karel Dvořák, featuring a dove :)
The stamp (Kč 35.00) was issued on September 12, 2008 in a nice souvenir sheet (mixed offset/intaglio printing) depicting a postal stage coach that travelled in 1750 between the cities of Vienna and Brno.
This souvenir sheet, a joint issue with Austria, was issued to announce the two international philatelic exhibitions organized in 2008 in Vienna (WIPA 2008) and Prague (PRAGA 2008).

I've already posted on this blog the illustrated prepaid postcard above, issued on September 14, 2011 devoted to the theme of Christmas, with its printed stamp (permanent "A" rate, valid for a domestic letter up to 50g, i.e. Kč 10.00) reproducing a nativity scene by the Slovak illustrator Dušan Kállay (b. 1948).
On November 9, 2011, the Czech Post has issued a stamp showing the same design. It is that stamp that appears in the upper left on this card.
To be perfect, a special "Christmas - musician angel" postmark, issued in Prague from November 9 to 11, 2011, was used here !

The prepaid card above, issued on November 9, 2011, commemorates the 70th anniversary of the participation of Czech 11th Infantry Battalion at the Battle of Tobruk (Libya).
This card, sold at a price of Kč 25.00, including a permanent rate "E" stamp valid for a letter up to 20g to Europe, i.e. Kč 20.00), was designed by Karel Zeman and printed in 3,700 copies.
This region of Tobruk has experienced several battles during the war from 1941 to 1942 between the British army and German and Italian troops of the Afrika Korps.
Czechoslovak troops (643 soldiers, 14 dead and 80 wounded) took part in this conflict, from October 21 to December 10, 2011, in reinforcement of British and Australian troops.
To note the special cancellation, issued from November 9 to 16, 2011, depicting an insignia of this 11th Infantry Battalion.

The last card above, posted in Prague on November 18, 2011, is older because it was issued on May 28, 2008, as part of the International Philatelic Exhibition PRAGA 2008 (six other cards were issued in 2007 and 2008).
This card, printed in 5,500 copies, includes a stamp referring to the Prague Castle with St. Vitus Cathedral and St. George Church.
The illustration to the left evokes the website EXPONET (Bret is one of the founders !) that allows an online access to over 750 philatelic exhibitions (mainly devoted to postal history) from 50 countries !

Musée de la Poste - Nouvelle LISA "Facteur rural"

Since October 20, 2011, a new ATM stamp (LISA) is proposed by the French Postal Museum ("L'Adresse-Musée de la Poste") in Paris, depicting a rural cycling postman in 1894.
This LISA2 (thermal paper) ATM stamp, designed by Bruno Ghiringhelli, was printed in 20,000 copies per roll of 1,000.
It's this LISA, including the new "Green Letter" postal rate, that appears on the cover below, sent on November 4, 2011 from this postal Museum.
Thank you very much Stéphane :-)

To note also the special postmark above accompanying the issue of this rather successful ATM stamp.
The cyclist shown on this stamp is the same (without his pipe !) as the one appearing on the "Stamp Day" stamp, designed and engraved by Jean Pheulpin, issued in 1972. This postman was then featured in front of the church of the village of Champignelles (Department of Yonne).
The issue of this LISA coincides with two anniversaries : the 150th anniversary of the Michaux Velocipede (invention of the crankset) and the second anniversary, to the day, of the new name of this postal Museum.

Série "Relations diplomatiques" au Brésil

"Diplomatic Ties" stamp series in Brazil

The Brazilian Post is continuing in 2011 its stamp issues devoted to diplomatic relations. Belgium, Paraguay, Serbia, Ukraine, Italy and Qatar are thus in the spotlight this year.
I was lucky to receive the two FDC below devoted to "diplomatic relations" stamps with Paraguay (issued on May 6, 2011) and Ukraine (issued on August 24, 2011).
Thank you very much Marcelo for these interesting stamp souvenirs mailed on October 27, 2011 from Sao Paulo :-)

The stamp above to the right (2 copies) features the Itaipu hydroelectric plant. Located on the Parana River on the border between Brazil and Paraguay, this plant symbolizes the close relationship between the two countries.
On this aerial view, you can see the reservoir in the background, the dam to the right and the open spillway to the left. The border is located at the center of the dam with the Brazilian side to the right and the Paraguayan side to the left.
This plant, meeting 18% and 90% of all Brazil's and Paraguay's electricity needs, is considered as the largest producer of clean, renewable energy on the planet !
To note the officiel logo of the 200th anniversary of the independence of Paraguay included at the bottom left on this stamp.
I don't know if this stamp is a joint issue with the Post of Paraguay ??

The other stamp above refers to the 120th anniversary of the first Ukrainian Immigrants in Brazil, who arrived in 1891 in the State of Parana for most of them.
Almost 500,000 descendants of Ukrainian are now living in Brazil.
This stamp shows to the left a night view of St. Sophia Cathedral (a UNESCO World Heritage site) located in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, and the wooden church of St. Michael the Archangel to the right, the first church to be built in Brazil by the Ukrainian community in Mallet (State of Parana).
The golden decorative symboles included on this stamp are a reminder of traditional patterns used in Ukrainian embroidery or on Easter eggs (Pysansky).
To note that the same day, the Ukrainian Post has also issued a stamp (with a different design) devoted to this 120th anniversary...

Lettre spéciale moldave du 11.11.11 !

A special 11.11.11 cover from Moldova !

A big thank you Sergio for this very special letter mailed on 11.11.11 at 11:00 at the postal office No. 11 of the Moldovan capital Chișinău !
I've also received many other covers from other parts of the world posted on 11.11.11 that I will post very soon on this blog :-)
Sergio has used a L 4.40 stamp being part of a souvenir sheet of three stamps, issued on September 16, 2005, devoted to the 10th anniversary of the national passport system.

The other stamp above (L 0.10) is part of the definitive series of six stamps, already mentioned on this blog, issued on February 15, 2011, featuring different mansions of the country, the one belonging to the Ralli family, located in Dolna (district of Străşeni) here.
This beautiful house (traditional architecture of the 19th century) is known for having hosted the Russian poet Pushkin several times between 1820 and 1823 during his exile in Bessarabia.
In 1946, this mansion has been converted into a museum that became later an annex of the Pushkin Museum of Chişinău.

Sergio has also sent me the interesting prepaid postcard above, issued on October 13, 2011, at the occasion of the 575th anniversary of the founding of the Moldovan capital, Chișinău.
This card is part of a set of six cards all designed by A. Kornienko (print run : 3,000 each) depicting some past and present views of the main monuments of the City, like the town hall here.
This building, opened in 1901, is the work of architects Mitrofan Elladi and Alexandru Bernardazzi (1831-1907). Bernardazzi is known to have been the Chișinău city architect between 1856 and 1878.

The other side of this prepaid postcard above with a stamp (L 0.70) depicting the seal of the city of Chișinău.
This same seal also appears on the nice FDC cancellation.
To note that the same day, the Post of Moldova has issued a series of five stamps (I've already mentioned it in a previous post) devoted to this 575th anniversary.

Another example of a prepaid card belonging to this same series above featuring the Cathedral of the Nativity and the "Holy Gates" ("Porţile Sfinte") called Arch of Triumph during its construction in 1840-1841 (architect : Luca Zauşkevici), located in the central park of Chisinau.

The Organ Hall ("Sala cu Orgă"), one of the Chisinau's most beautiful buildings, built in 1911 according to the plans of the architect in chief of the Moldovan capital, Alexandru Bernardazzi (1831-1907), appears on the third card above.

Emission commune Pologne/Suède - Hommage à Marie Curie

A tribute to Marie Curie on Sweden-Poland joint issue

2011 is the International Year of Chemistry (IYC), succeeding the International Year of Physics (2005) and of Astronomy (2009).
This IYC, a United Nations decision, jointly organized by UNESCO and the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, is intended to show the role of chemistry in human activities and its essential contributions to the protection of the environment...
The year 2011 was chosen because it coincides with the 100th anniversary of Marie Curie's Nobel Prize in Chemistry, honored for her work on radium and polonium.

Marie Skłodowska Curie was born in 1867 in Warsaw, Poland and the Nobel Prize in Chemistry is awarded annually in Stockholm, Sweden.
It is probably for these reasons that the postal administrations of these two countries have decided to issue, on November 17, 2011, a joint souvenir sheet devoted to the 100th anniversary of her Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
It's the Polish version of this beautiful sheet (print run : 500,000), designed by Marzanna Dabrowska and engraved by Piotr Naszarkowski, that appears on the nice official FDC above with "radium" cancellation from Warsaw.
Thank you very much Kazimierz :-)

The stamp at the top is inspired by a photograph of Marie Curie in her laboratory at the Radium Institute in Paris in 1921 while the second stamp evokes the radium element (slightly blue luminescent silvery metal in an inert environment) and the Nobel medal.

Kazimierz didn't dare to write my postal address on the front of this FDC (what I can easily understand given its extreme beauty !) and therefore all is mentionned on the other side above, including the registered sticker and the hand cancellation of the city of Tarnobrzeg.
To note finally that other postal administrations have chosen to commemorate this International Year of Chemistry 2011 by also issuing stamps featuring Marie Curie (France, Spain, Sri Lanka, Jersey, Bosnian Serb Republic, Paraguay).
The same portrait of Marie Curie as the one reproduced on this Polish souvenir sheet has beside inspired the stamps issued by France and Jersey...

Nouvelle série artistique tchèque

Every year since 1993, the Czech Post allows stamp collectors to acquire beautiful works of art through stamp issues (engraved by the greatest masters of the country) devoted to Art.
I've recently posted on this blog the last two "Art" stamps issued in 2011. The nice registered letter below, posted in Prague on November 3, 2011, allows you to discover two new paintings reproduced on older stamps.
Thank you very much Bret :-)

I've also spoken about the two identical stamps in the upper left (Kč 12.00) issued in 2006, with two personalized coupons referring to the Czech Telecommunications Office and to the end of analogical television in the country from 11.11.2011.

The Kč 7.00 stamp, designed and engraved by Miloš Ondrácek (issued on November 9, 1994), reproduced an engraving by the Dutch painter Lucas van Leyden (1494-1533), entitled "An old fool and a woman" (1520). Through this work, the Czech Post commemorated the 500th anniversary of the birth of one of the best engravers in the history of art (with the German Albrecht Dürer).
Anything else with the work of Czech painter František Kupka (1871-1957) reproduced on the other stamp above (Kč 22.00, engraved by Václav Fajt), issued on June 17, 1998, entitled "Amorpha - Two-Coloured Fugue"(1912).
František Kupka is considered as one of the "fathers" of abstract art, with Kandinsky and Mondrian, even if he refused to be associated with an art movement in particular.
These two works are kept in the National Gallery in Prague.

Série EUROPA 2011 du Luxembourg

EUROPA 2011 stamps from Luxembourg

Happy to share with you today this new letter below made, as those already published on this blog from Vatican City and Switzerland, at the booth of the Post of Luxembourg at the last "Salon Philatélique d'Automne" in Paris.
I've chosen the series of two EUROPA stamps (€ 0.60 + € 0.85), issued on May 17, 2011, devoted to the theme of Forests as part of the International Year of Forests.
To note that no hand postmark was applied on this cover at its departure from Luxembourg to France (the cancellation below was affixed in Paris) ?

After reflection, I'd have to choose another stamp set more in line with the special postmark affixed on this letter announcing the participation of the Luxembourg Stamp Office at this Stamp Exhibition. That same May 17, 2011, Luxembourg had indeed issued another "Wine" series of two stamps devoted to the Crémant of Luxembourg and to the Federation of Viticultural Associations of Luxembourg...
To speak about forests, Luxembourg is one of the most forested countries of Western Europe (34% of its territory) with mainly species of beech and oak.
This is beside a beech forest that is depicted on one of these two stamps (€ 0.60) designed by British artist Alan Johnston, who has worked for 4 years at the National Museum of Natural History in Luxembourg.
The second stamp seems to feature a typical landscape of the Luxembourg Ardennes (north of the country) ?

Emission commune Azerbaïdjan-Belarus

A Belarus-Azerbaijan joint stamp issue

Merci beaucoup Mahir :-)
I have recently spoken on this blog about a joint stamp issue between the Republic of Korea and Australia devoted to traditional musical instruments.
The two postal administrations of Belarus and Azerbaijan have chosen the same theme for a joint issue consisting of two se-tenant stamps, issued on May 25, 2011.
It's this series from Azerbaijan (print run : 20,000, 40,000 for the Belarus set) that appears on the nice registered letter below mailed on November 14, 2011 in Baku.
Thank you very much Mahir :-)

These two stamps (50 qəpik each) are depicting two traditional instruments from the two countries, the wheel lyra (Belarus) and the tar (Azerbaijan) as well as the way to play through the presence of a musician. The right part is decorated with typical fabric patterns of each country.
The wheel lyra is an ancient stringed folk instrument from Belarus where it is also called hurdy-gurdy. It was played, in the past, by wandering musicians or blind.
This instrument has the particularity of producing sound by a crank-turned rosined wheel rubbing against the strings.
The tar, a long-necked lute with a dual-heart shape, is the national musical instrument of Azerbaijan. Associated with songs, the tar is one of the main instruments (with kamancha and daf) used in the Mugham, a traditional musical genre that weds classical poetry and musical improvisation.
The Azerbaijani Mugham was inscribed in 2008 on the list of the (UNESCO) Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Exposition philatélique à Fleury Mérogis - Cachet spécial

French Stamp Exhibition in Fleury Mérogis - Special postmark

A short post today to share with you this interesting letter mailed from the Philatelic departemental Exhibition held in Fleury-Mérogis (department of Essonne - 91) by the Philatelic Association of Fleury-Morsang, on October 29-30, 2011.
Thank you very much Roland for this stamp souvenir :-)
To note the professionalism of the person who has applied in a perfect way the two cancellations below, including the logo of the city of Fleury-Mérogis.

This Stamp Exhibition was organized under the patronage of the GAPHIL (Group of philatelic associations of Paris - Ile de France).
Thirty philatelists (belonging to FFAP federated associations) have submitted their collections through nearly 2,000 exposed sheets. A dozen of these collections were thus selected for the upcoming regional competition to be held in Paris in February 2012.
Roland has used the self-adhesive version of the stamp, issued on September 28, 2011, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the TGV (French high-speed train), about which I've already widely spoken on this blog.

Série EUROPA 2011 du Vatican

EUROPA 2011 series from Vatican City

During my visit at the "Salon Philatélique d'Automne" in Paris on November 5, 2011, I stopped at the booth of the Vatican Post and made the cover below, franked with the set of two se-tenant EUROPA stamps (€ 0.60 + € 0.75), issued on June 21, 2011.
These two stamps (print run : 300,000) have been issued in a sheet of 10 stamps (5 horizontal pairs) with the words in Italian "2011 Anno Internazionale delle Foreste" ("2011 International Year of Forests") in the margins to the left and the right.
To note the special postmark at the bottom left evoking the participation of the Poste Vaticane at this Philatelic Exhibition, featuring the Vendôme column located on the Vendôme Square in Paris (not the Eiffel Tower for once !).

To note the mechanical cancellation of November 9, 2011 and its rather unusual red color...
The tiny Vatican City is not particularly known for its forests, the Post of Vatican has thus chosen to reproduce the upper part of a fresco by Perugino (c. 1448-1523) entitled "Moses Leaving to Egypt" (c. 1482 ) being part of the decoration of the middle register of the Sistine Chapel.
This kind of landscape consisting of hills, dotted with trees and shrubs is typical of the style of Perugino.
To note the presence of a palm tree, symbol of the Christian sacrifice, and of birds including two ones mating in flight, referring to the renewed cycle of nature...

Here is above this complete fresco "Moses Leaving to Egypt", facing another fresco by Perugino entitled "The Baptism of Christ".
You can see Moses (in a yellow and green dress) in the foreground, leaving to Egypt, stopped by an angel asking him to circumcise his second son Eliezer (a scene featured to the right).
In the second plan, another scene shows Moses and his wife Zipporah greeting Jethro (Moses' father-in-law) before leaving.
Moses is so featured three times on a same work of art !

1er satellite scientifique polonais - bloc spécial

Merci beaucoup Kazimierz :-)
On November 4, 2011, the Polish Post has issued an interesting souvenir sheet devoted to the first scientific satellite designed by Poland, by the institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences, of the Space Research Centre and the astronomical center Nicolas Copernicus, all located in Warsaw, in cooperation with the Institute of Astronomy of the University of Wroclaw.
It's this numbered souvenir sheet (177,211 of 300,000), designed by Jacek Brodowski, that appears on the official FDC below with a postmark from Warsaw.
Thank you very much Kazimierz :-)

Poland joined, in 2009, the BRITE (BRIght Target Explorer) Constellation program consisting of six nanosatellites, in cooperation also with Canada and Austria (Austrian Post had also featured the BRITE-Austria satellite on its EUROPA stamp issued in 2009).
This network of nanosatellites will therefore allow to study the properties of the brightest stars in our galaxy.
Polish scientists will design two nanosatellites, BRITE-PL (shown on this stamp, sent into space in September 2012) and BRITE-PL2 (launched in 2013).
Measuring 20 cm long and weighing 5 kg, this first Polish satellite was nicknamed "LEM" after the renowned science-fiction novelist Stanislaw Lem...

Quand l'Azerbaïdjan célèbre le concours Eurovision

When Azerbaijan is celebrating Eurovision SC

After only its fourth participation (since 2008) at the Eurovision Song Contest, Azerbaijan has won the 56th edition which took place on May 14, 2011 in Düsseldorf, Germany.
Considered as a has-been event in France, this song contest is an institution in many other countries in Europe.
Azerbaijan has probably realized it could take advantage of this victory, in particular through the issue, on July 7, 2011, of a special souvenir sheet paying tribute to the winning musical duo.

It is this souvenir sheet (print run : 15,000), consisting of a one Manat stamp, that appears on the interesting registered letter above mailed from Baku on November 14, 2011. Thank you very much Mahir :-)
The two singers Eldar Gasimov and Nigar Jamal (the duo "Ell & Nikki"), with their song entitled "Running Scared" have thus allowed Azerbaijan to win this song contest (with 221 points) ahead of Italy (back after a 14-years absence) and Sweden.
The country's capital, Baku, will host the semifinals and the final (on May 26, 2012) of the 57th Eurovision Song Contest.

Splendide série tchèque "Arts 2011"

A beautiful "Art 2011" stamp series

Merci beaucoup Bret :-)
As usually at the end of each year, the Czech Post has issued, on November 9, 2011, a new series of three beautiful stamps dedicated to Czech Art, to different painters in particular.
The three Czech great masters of engraving Václav Fajt, Miloš Ondráček and Martin Srb have respectively engraved these 24 Kč, 26 Kč and 30 Kč stamps.
Two stamps of this series appear to the right on the nice registered letter below mailed on the first day of issue in Prague. Thank you very much bret :-)

Bret was kind enough to attach to his letter the three official FDC below issued by the Czech Post devoted to this Art set.
