For the third time (after 1988 and 2000), the China Post has issued, on January 5, 2012, a new stamp devoted to the Lunar New Year of the Dragon, which has officially began on January 23.
On its first day of issue, the dragon featured on this stamp (1.20 yuan) designed by Chen Shaohua, was considered controversial by some as too fierce, ready to pounce, claws and fangs out !
It's that stamp that appears to the right on the cover below mailed on the day of issue from Shanghai. Thank you very much Wang Jia Yi :-)
To note that the dragon depicted on the special postmark seems equally threatening...
The dragon is the most revered animal by Chinese people, among the 12 animals of the calendar, an auspicious creature and a symbol of the emperor.

The designer of the stamp, Chen Shaohua, said to have received a request from the China Post to adjust his design to make this dragon gentler and more modern but has refused arguing in particular that it was inspired by representations of dragons that adorned the Chinese Emperor's robes...
For some foreign observers, this menacing dragon could be interpreted as the symbol of the rise (or the bellicose tendencies...) of China in Asia and the world.
Chen Shaohua answered that his dragon symbolized the greater confidence of China on the international scene but it was also fierce in order to block evil spirits in 2012...
I've to admit that this stamp is one of the most successful (with maybe the Croatian stamp) among those issued in the world devoted to this Year of the Dragon :-)
