150 ans de l'unité italienne - Plis spéciaux

150 years of the Italian Unification - Special covers

Merci beaucoup Giovanni :-)
As already mentioned on this blog, 2011 was an important year in Italy with the commemorations of the 150th anniversary of the unification of the country.
The Italian Post has issued fifteen sets of stamps in 2011 devoted to different historical events related to this unification.
On November 4, 2011, two interesting miniature sheets (composed each of three stamps) were issued, entitled "feats of arms", dedicated to battles that took place between 1848 and 1917.
Two stamps from one of these two sheets appear on the cover below mailed on February 22, 2012 from the city of Verona. Thank you very much Giovanni :-)

The stamp at the top refers to the Capture of Rome (the "breach of Porta Pia" in particular after a painting by Carlo Ademollo, Civic Museum of Risorgimento in Milan) that led, on September 20, 1870, to the annexation of the city to the Kingdom of Italy, thus ending the existence of the Papal States. This symbolic event allowed the city of Rome to become the capital of united Italy from 1871.
The other stamp evokes the first world war and the 12 battles of Isonzo (northeast of the country) that opposed the troops of the Kingdom of Italy to Austria-Hungary from 1915 to 1917.
The objective of these battles (painting from the Museum of Contemporary History of Milan, reproduced on the stamp) was to conquer the city of Trieste, a strategic port on the Adriatic Sea.

On June 2, 2011, the Italian Post has issued eight other souvenir sheets, each composed of one € 0.60 stamp, devoted to the main protagonists of this unification of Italy.
This is one of these sheets that appear on the special cover above (thank you again Gio !), devoted to Giuseppe Mazzini (1805-1872), Italian patriot and revolutionary, considered as one of the four "Fathers of the Nation" with Giuseppe Garibaldi, King Victor Emmanuel II and Camillo Cavour.
The portraits of these four personalities are beside included on the special cancellation of November 26, 2011 (Philately Day) above, issued in Massafra (Province of Taranto).
Mazzini is in particular the founder in 1831 of the movement "Giovine Italia", a political association promoting a general insurrection in the Italian reactionary states, whose flag (and its motto) is reproduced on this stamp.

Giovanni has also sent me the other cover above with another souvenir sheet, issued on March 17, 2011, devoted to the 150th anniversary of the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy.
This sheet shows the facade of Palazzo Carignano in Turin (to the right), built in the 17th century by Guarino Guarini, that was the seat of the first Italian Parliament and the facade of Palazzo Montecitorio in Rome (to the left), by Gian Lorenzo Bernini (17th century), the current seat of the Italian Parliament.
The upper margin reproduces a part of the "frieze for the Chamber of Deputies", dedicated to the history of the Italian people, painted between 1908 and 1912 by Giulio Aristide Sartorio in the current parliament.
To note the interesting special postmark of the date of issue, issued in Castellaneta (Province of Taranto), referring to Giuseppe Garibaldi.
