Chemins de Saint-Jacques - Premier Jour du Puy

The Way of St. James in France - Special card from Le-Puy

To follow my post published yesterday devoted to the new French stamp set "The Way of St. James", I was also very lucky to receive the two First Day of Issue souvenirs below issued in the city of Le-Puy-en-Velay.
A big thank you to Jean-Claude and to the "Association Philatélique Vellave", the local philatelic union :-)
The preview sale of this series of four stamps (issued in a souvenir sheet) took indeed also place in the cities of Le-Puy-en-Velay, Arles and Vezelay, where however a different FDC cancellation (from the Paris' one) was issued.

This FDC postmark from Le-Puy-en-Velay (March 30, 2012), designed by André Lavergne (also the creator and engraver of this stamp series), depicting a shell of St. James, appears on the cover above franked with the stamp evoking the Via Turonensis and the Saint-Jacques Tower in Paris.
This shell has become indeed the symbol of the pilgrimage of Santiago de Compostela when pilgrims used to bring this shell back, fixing it to their coats or their hats...

On the occasion of the First Day organized at the Hotel Dieu of Le-Puy-en-Velay (located next to the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Annunciation), the "Association Philatélique Vellave" has published the splendid special card above from an original work by painter Auguste Boudignon, showing pilgrims contemplating the city of Le-Puy-en-Velay.
Thank you again to Jean-Claude who sent me this card including the signature of André Lavergne !!
This card allows you to discover this souvenir sheet with its black starry background that evokes a possible etymology for Compostela ("Campus Stellae" meaning "Field of the star") in reference to the legend saying that the tomb of St. James was found thanks to a star shining over a field...
The central margin of the sheet reproduces one of the most famous sculpted capitals of the Basilica of St. Mary Magdalene in Vezelay, devoted to the "Moulin Mystique", a masterpiece of Romanesque sculpture. You can see Moses pouring the grain into the mill and St. Paul collecting it.
