Salon Philatélique de Printemps 2012 à Épernay

Spring Stamp Exhibition 2012 in Épernay, France

After Angers in 2011, the French city of Épernay (department of Marne) hosted, from 13 to 15 April 2012, the "Salon Philatélique de Printemps" ("Spring Stamp Exhibition"), organized evrey year by the CNEP, the French Union Chamber of Traders and Experts in Philately.
Épernay is known worldwide to be located in the heart of the Champagne wine region and as the headquarters of the largest champagne houses.
Therefore quite normal to find these vines in the foreground on the special stamp issued by the French Post for the occasion !
This stamp (€ 0.60), issued on general sale on April 16, 2012, appears on the Épernay's first day cover below. Thank you very much Joël :-)

The preview sale of this stamp (13, 14 and 15 April 2012) took of course place during this Stamp Exhibition, but also in Paris ("Carré d'Encre") with the same FDC cancellation.
This stamp, rather drab in my opinion, was created and engraved (from a photograph of the town hall of Épernay) by Yves Beaujard. His daughter, Sophie, designed the FDC postmark evoking a bunch of grapes (Chardonnay grape ?).
This stamp shows the city of Épernay in the background with in particular the "Tour de Castellane", its highest point (63 meters high) that offers visitors a unique view of the city and vineyards. Built between 1903 and 1905, this tower's walls are decorated with the names of worldwide major cities as well as the coats of arms of the main Marne's cities producing Champagne wine.

As in previous years, a special "LISA" ATM stamp (offset on nonthermic LISA 1 paper) was also issued, only during the three days of this Spring Stamp Exhibition.
This ATM stamp appears on the letter above with another special cancellation from this Exhibition, including the CNEP's logo, dated April 14, 2012. Thank you again Joël !
This LISA, designed by Roland Irolla (for the first time, the name of the designer is included on a LISA !), features the vineyards around Épernay as well as the St. Martin Portal to the right.
This Renaissance style's Portal (built in 1540) is the only vestige of the Church of Our Lady and one of the oldest monuments of the city (historic monument since 1908).
