Série EUROPA 2012 en Grèce

EUROPA 2012 stamp set from Greece

A short post to share with you today this interesting registered letter, mailed from Chania (Crete island) on July 23, 2012, franked with the EUROPA 2012 stamp series issued by the Greek Post. Thank you very much Spyros :-)
These two stamps (€ 0.75 + € 3.25), issued on May 10, 2012, illustrate the theme "Visit..." chosen this year by the European postal organization PostEurop.
They've been issued (100,000 copies each) in sheets of 16 stamps (composed of 8 pairs) as well as in a numbered booklet (print run : 12,000) consisting of two pairs of stamps including only vertical perforations.

The two stamps appearing on the cover above have been extracted from one of these booklets.
Greece, despite its current economic problems, remains an important tourist destination in Europe, with its landscapes, its rich cultural and historical heritage.
As it is seasonal, Greece is also the birthplace of the ancient Olympics.
To evoke all these different aspects, the Greek Post has chosen to illustrate this EUROPA theme in a rather abstract way with a painting by Vaia Papazikou (adapted by Myrsini Vardopoulou).
An olive tree seems to be depicted on the stamp to the left, as well as a sun printed with a metallic effect ink, with a depiction of an island's landscape in the background, which continues on the other stamp...
