100 ans de la Domowina en Allemagne - FDC

100 Years of Domowina in Germany - FDC

This region of Lusatia is a territory spread over three countries : Germany (Lands of Saxony and Brandenburg), Poland (Silesia) and Czech Republic (Bohemia).
Lusatia is still inhabited by the Slav minority of the Sorbs (or Wends) who speak a language close to the Polish and Czech.
Oppressed or prohibited (under the Nazi regime) in the past, Domowina aims to preserve and promote the Sorbian language and culture.

On October 11, 2012, the Deutsche Post has issued a special stamp to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Domowina. It is that stamp (€ 1.45) designed by illustrator Kitty Kahane (born in 1960), that appears on the First Day Cover above with a postmark from Bonn. Thank you very much Igor :-)
As usual, this stamp was issued in panes of 10 stamps with illustrated margins including in particular the pan-slavic colors Sorbian flag (blue, red and white) above.
The illustration on this stamp evokes a traditional Sorbian festival called "Vogelhochzeit" in German and "Ptači kwas" in Sorbian ("Bird's wedding").
Children put each year on the eve of January 25, a plate in front of the doors or windows and are discovering the next day some bird ou nest-shaped candy or cookies.
To note that the GDR's Post had issued a nice set of six stamps in 1982 (with bilingual mentions in German and Sorbian) devoted to different Sorbian folk customs including "Vogelhochzeit"...
