During a ceremony at the Museum of German History in Berlin on September 27th 2012, German Chancellor Angela Merkel unveiled the new stamp issued by the Deutsche Post dedicated to one of his predecessors, Helmut Kohl (b. 1930).
This stamp, officially issued on October 11, 2012, commemorates the 30th anniversary of the arrival in power of Helmut Kohl (on October 1, 1982) who remained Chancellor of Germany for 16 years, a record !
But this stamp was also issued to remind us that Helmut Kohl has been a strong advocate of European integration and the Father of German reunification...

This stamp (€ 0.55), which logically includes the flags of Germany and the European Union appears on the special cover above mailed on October 27th 2012 from the 30th edition of the International Philatelic Exhibition in Sindelfingen, near Stuttgart. Thank you very much Franz :-)
This stamp is very interesting because it is only the third time in the history of the German Post that a personality is featured on a stamp in his lifetime !
Only the German Pope Benedict XVI and one of the founding fathers of Europe, the French Jean Monnet, had indeed known this honor before Helmut Kohl. A German stamp devoted to Jean Monnet was issued in 1977 (2 years before his death) when the title of "Honorary Citizen of Europe" was awarded to him in 1976.
Helmut Kohl is only the second person to receive this honor in 1998, what is recalled on this stamp ("Ehrenbürger Europas") with the other mention "Chancellor of Unity" ("Kanzler der Einheit").
Franz has completed his postage with an ATM stamp (value € 0.20), issued on October 24, 2008, depicting the Brandenburg Gate, that was a symbol of the division of the country before the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989...
