Fête de Yennayer en Algérie

Yennayer celebrations in Algeria

On January 14, 2013, the Algerian Post has issued a stamp in general sale devoted to Yennayer, a celebration of Berber origin celebrated every year in all regions of Algeria.
It is that stamp (15 Dinars, design by S. Khelifi) that appears to the right on this interesting illustrated FDC below with postmarks (of January 12) from Tlemcen. Thank you very much Omar :-)
Yennayer is the first day of the year of the agrarian calendar used since ancient times by Berber people, traditionally celebrated on the eve of January 12.

Yennayer, symbol of joy, family togetherness and solidarity throughout Algeria, marks the beginning of the agrarian year that populations celebrate with rites often symbolizing fertility or prosperity as the meal called "Imensi n Yennayer" composed of couscous and chicken.
This celebration is accompanied by many rites, games, beliefs and legends ("the old woman"...).
The illustration on this cover evokes a woman preparing couscous while the stamp is featuring some Berber graphic symbols such as a stylised methred (a traditional couscous dish) and some Y-shaped representations referring to the original inhabitants of the region.

Entier postal consacré à Jiří Trnka en Rép. Tchèque

Postal stationery devoted to Jiří Trnka in Czech Rep.

Thank you very much Bret for this postal stationery sent from Prague on the first day of issue :-)

Christmas post office in Germany - Special postmark

Germany has the particularity of hosting many Christmas post offices (Weihnachtspostamt), more than a dozen today, even if the Deutsche Post, given the economic context, calls for the closure of these offices located in the small towns...
Thus, the Kinderweihnachtspost (Children's Christmas post office) situated in Himmelsthür (Lower Saxony, Hildesheim district), established in 1967, one of the oldest and largest Christmas post offices in Germany, had to be closed even if, however, an answer is made to all the letters received.

A specific postmark (with two children and an angel) is always applied on the covers like the one above, dated December 24th 2012. Thank you very much Igor :-)
Igor has franked his letter with a stamp (self-adhesive version) being part of a joint issue (two stamps) with Japan, issued on February 3, 2011.
This series evokes a site of each country, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, the Old Town of Regensburg and its cathedral on this stamp. The other stamp depicts the Yakushi-ji temple in the ancient Japanese capital, Nara.

Timbres "Saint-Valentin 2013" à Taïwan

Valentine's Day 2013 stamps from Taiwan

After 2007, 2011 and 2012, the Taiwan's Chunghwa Post has issued a new series of two stamps dedicated to St. Valentine's Day, the lovers Day.
The aim of this series (a little "girly") is also to bring the younger to philately with very colorful heart-shaped stamps...
On February 4, 2013, two stamps (NT$ 12 and NT$ 25), designed by Hsien-nen Chiu, have therefore been issued, also declined in a souvenir sheet (print run : 850,000) and a mini pane consisting of three pairs (print run : 600,000) .

I was lucky enough to receive the two official FDC above and below regarding respectively the souvenir sheet (with the shape of interlocking hearts !) and two single stamps. Thank you very much Ling :-)
Printed in offset by Dutch Joh. Enschedé Security Print, these stamps are each composed of three roses partly embossed with prismatic effects...

Slovak stamps engraving at the Postal Museum of Prague

From February 7 to April 21, 2013, the Postal Museum in Prague pays tribute to the greatest Slovak engravers with an exhibition entitled "The best of Slovak stamps engraving".
On this occasion, the Czech Post has issued on February 7, 2013, a special postal stationery (permanent rate 'E' for Europe) including a stamp featuring the illustration of a Czechoslovak stamp issued in 1966 to announce a philatelic exhibition in Prague.
This stamp, depicting a postal coach on the Charles Bridge in Prague, is one of the 400 stamps engraved by Josef Herčík (1922-1999), one of the most prolific Czech artists after the Second World War.

Cyberspace and independence in Venezuela

The postal network regarding letters in Venezuela is definitely a mystery for me...
A new example with this cover sent by registered mail from the city of Valencia on October 1, 2012 and received more than four months later...
Thank you very much Eduardo :-)
The two stamps (0.30 and 2.00 Bolivars) are part of a sheet of 10 different stamps, issued on May 15th 2009, devoted to the protection of children in cyberspace.
Most countries are indeed taken measures to protect the younger against the threats of Internet (pornography, forums...).

To note that this theme of the "Protection of children in cyberspace" was chosen by the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) in 2009 for its World Telecommunication and Information Society Day celebrated every year on May 17th.
On May 17th 2009, the postal administrations of Morocco and Algeria had also issued a stamp devoted to this topic...

The other side of this letter above with some other postmarks of 2 and 9 October 2012 including the words "apertura certificada" ("certified opening") ?
On July 5, 2011, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has officially celebrated the 200th anniversary of its independence (from Spain).
The Post of Venezuela (Ipostel) had started to commemorate this bicentennial by issuing a large number of stamps, in particular four mini sheets (42 stamps in total !) issued on December 13, 2009 to pay tribute to different personalities having participated in the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
The soldier and MP of Caracas, Gabriel de Ponte y Mijares de Solórzano (1762-1812), is featured on the stamp above (by painter Willian Guerra).

Année du serpent - FDC de Hong Kong

Year of the Snake - FDC from Hong Kong

Merci beaucoup Kun :-)
The Hong Kong Post is probably the postal administration that has issued the largest number of stamps to celebrate the New Year of the Snake : a series of four stamps ($ 11.80), a souvenir sheet ($ 10), a silk stamp sheetlet ($ 50) and a third prestige souvenir sheet ($ 100) consisting of two gold and silver stamps (dragon and snake) !
Anyway, these stamps designed by Kan Tai-keung, are rather nice and I was lucky enough to receive the two FDC of January 26th 2013 below, regarding respectively this set of four stamps and the first souvenir sheet. Thank you very much Kun :-)

The series above is reminding us that the different animals of the Chinese zodiac are frequently used as the theme for Chinese arts and crafts. This sign of the Snake is here declined in red paper cutout ($ 1.40) that decorates the windows and doors of houses during the New Year celebrations, in painting (Lingnan School, $ 2.40), in seal carving (Zhuanke , $ 3.00) and in green jade carving ($ 5.00).
To note the FDC cancellation evoking the inscription "snake" in Chinese, which is also found on a seal carved on the $ 3.00 stamp.

The souvenir sheet above, including some golden parts (with a kind of cobra in the left margin), was inspired by a print on a piece of paper applied from a reverse image of carved into the surface of a wooden block.
It shows a multicolored snake playing with a glowing pearl surrounded by flames. To note the curious presence of a frog and two mushrooms...
The FDC postmark refers here to this New Year of the Snake and to the previous one devoted to the Dragon.

Oeuvre monumentale de B. Venet - nouveau timbre de France

Very happy to share with you this FDC below as it is devoted to a stamp that I really love, about the French conceptual artist Bernar Venet, born in 1941 in Château-Arnoux-Saint-Auban (04). Thank you very much Joël :-)
That stamp (print run : 1.2 million), that was issued in preview sale on 1 and 2 February 2013 in Paris (Carré d'Encre) and in Château-Arnoux-Saint-Auban, includes a nominal value of € 1.55 (50 to 100g letter to France, Andorra and Monaco).
To note the FDC cancellation of Paris here, designed by Valérie Besser, referring to the Bernar Venet's initials (the way he signs his works ?).

That stamp was designed from a photograph taken at the Château de Versailles in 2011 when Bernar Venet, an artist of international renown (he now lives in the USA), had invested the place by installing seven steel sculptures, like this composition of two 22 meters high arcs, entitled "85.8° Arc x 16", located on each side of the statue of Louis XIV.
Often inspired by mathematics, Bernar Venet has designed in the 1980's a project "Lignes indéterminées" ("Indeterminate Lines") consisting of steel sculptures installed in the urban areas of many cities in the world.
The work of art on this stamp, sometimes disconcerting for the uninitiated, is part of this project, Venet having used mathematics to guide his aesthetic and give sense to his works...

Olympics, Chess and movie on a cover from Slovenia

On July 31, 2012, the Slovenian athlete Urška Žolnir won the gold medal in judo (63 kg) during the last Olympic Games in London.
As it was the case in 2008 for the gold medal won by Primož Kozmus, the Slovenian Post has issued on September 28th 2012, a special stamp devoted to Urška Žolnir.
That stamp (€ 0.92) is part of the beautiful postage of the registered cover below mailed on January 30, 2013 from Ljubljana. Thank you very much Petra :-)
The Slovenian delegation in London, consisting of 65 athletes (28 men and 37 women) competing in 15 sports, has won 4 medals (1 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze) in judo, athletics, rowing and shooting.
To note that the four Olympic medalists of 2012 had already won at least one Olympic medal at previous Olympics !

The € 0.58 stamp, issued on November 23, 2012, commemorates the 80th anniversary of the first screening (on December 9th 1932 in Ljubljana) of the silent film "The Slopes of Triglav" ("Triglavske strmine"), the second ever Slovenian film, telling the story of climbers in their longing for unconquered rock faces of the Triglav, the highest point (2864 m) and national symbol of Slovenia. Anton Cerar, the main Slovenian actor of the time, was the hero of this film.
The last stamp (€ 1.33) above, issued on September 28th 2012 in a souvenir sheet, is devoted to the World Youth Chess Championship that took place for the first time in Slovenia, in the city of Maribor (from 7 to 19 November 2012). That stamp, designed by Edi Berk, features a chess piece (knight) with the Old Bridge (Stari most), built on the Drava river from 1913, in the background.
This championship, held annually, is a competition for girls and boys under the age of 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18. Nearly 9000 games were played, involving 1584 players coming from 92 different countries.
I rather like this sheet including also the other chess pieces in the top margin.
Finally, to note that Maribor was in the spotlight in 2012 as it had been also designated European Capital of Culture...

Félins du Brésil - Carte maximum 2012

Felids from Brazil - 2012 Maxicard

On June 5th 2012, the Brazilian Post (Correios) has issued a nice set of two se-tenant stamps dedicated to two species of felids living in Brazil, in order to educate people about their preservation and their role in the Brazilian ecosystem.
I was lucky to receive this interesting maxicard below regrading this series featuring a Jaguarundi (photo by Adriano Gambarini) to the left and an Ocelot (photo by Edson Endrigo) to the right.
Issued in 150,000 copies each, the preview sale of these two stamps (permanent rate "1st level - commercial letter") took place in Campo Grande (State of Mato Grosso do Sul) and São Luís (State of Maranhão).

It is that FDC cancellation from Campo Grande that has been applied on the two stamps above, the two stylized cats on the card being the work of Daniel Effi.
These two species of felines, the Jaguarundi (Puma yagouaroundi) and the Ocelot (Leopardus pardalis), rather solitary and with a similar size, are living in different habitats (forests, grasslands, wetlands...) of Central and South America.
The Ocelot, called "Jaguatirica" in Brazil, and the Jaguarundi, called "Gato-mourisco" in Brazil, are not particularly endangered species in the country despite the increasing destruction of their habitat.

The other side of this card above mailed on December 27th 2012 from Sao Paulo. Thank you very much Marcelo :-)
The same FDC postmark from Campo Grande, clearer, was also applied in the upper left.
Finally, I've already mentioned on this blog the three self-adhesive stamps used above being part of two definitive series issued in 2005 and 2002 devoted respectively to popular occupations (shoemaker and tailor here) and to instruments (trumpet here).

Courrier de la principauté de Lichtenberg !

A cover from the Principality of Lichtenberg !

On July 16, 2010, the Principality of Lichtenberg was officially founded, headed by the Sovereign Prince Maximilian (born 1990) holding the executive, legislative and judicial power.
This Principality, working a bit like the Vatican City State, has however no official territory (like the Order of Malta in Rome) and is not recognized by any country, even if it has two consulates in Great Britain and Mexico.
But the originality of this Principality, not recognized by the UPU, is also that it issues its own stamps since January 2012, which are used from the residence of the Prince (in Michigan, USA) or from consulates.

Once franked with stamps from Lichtenberg, these letters then pass by the official postal operator of the concerned country, the USPS for example for this letter above, where some "official" stamps of the country must be added (a $ 1.10 ATM stamp on this cover).
Thank you very much to the Prince Maximilian for this very special cover sent from his residence on February 3, 2013 :-)
The two identical stamps to the right ($ 1.00) are part of the definitve series issued in 2013, consisting of six values featuring the profile of the young Prince Maximilian.
These stamps, with a rather good quality, are designed by American artist Jack Lupro, known as Johann, Count of Lupro inside the Principality of Lichtenberg, and printed in Berlin, Germany.
To note the cancellation of the Lichtenberg Post with the mention "Pro Deo et Patria" evoking a part of the motto "For God, Prince and Fatherland"...

I suppose that this Principality of Lichtenberg takes its name from the territory of the same name that was a State of the German Confederation in the early 19th century...
I don't know if the current Prince (son of Hereditary Prince Friedrich Karl von Lichtenberg and Marie Grafin von Langel), who has signed the letter above that was inside this envelope, is a direct descendant of the family of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha that ruled this German Principality ?

I also have the honor of becoming, on February 3, 2013, a citizen of the Principality of Lichtenberg as evidenced by the letter received above, signed by the Count of Lupro !
I hope I'll however be able to keep my French nationality :-
As a citizen, my duty is loyalty to the Prince and the Principality of Lichtenberg, that has its national anthem ("This is My Fatherland"), flag (black and yellow) and coat of arms.

Nouveaux timbres coeur en France !

For the 15th year since 1999, the French Post has again issued, in general sale on January 28th 2013, a series of heart-shaped stamps (2 single stamps + 1 souvenir sheet of 5 stamps).
But for the first time, the souvenir sheet issued is composed of 5 different stamps !
After Adeline André, Emmanuel Ungaro, Torrente, Cacharel, Givenchy or Saint-Laurent in the previous years, the French manufacturer Hermès International is honored this year through its famous "Carré Hermès", a square silk scarf (90cm x 90cm), an iconic symbol of French luxury and elegance, created in 1937.

One of the two single stamps (€ 0.58, print run : 3,300,000) was used on the First Day Cover above with a nice cancellation issued on January 25, 2013 in Paris ("Carré d'Encre"). Thank you very much Joël :-)
This stamp depicts a detail of a scarf entitled "De tout coeur" (Autumn-Winter 2007 collection), created by designer Zoé Pauwels who collaborates with Hermès since 1984.
This scarf, inspired by naive illumination, features many stylized hearts, birds, shooting stars, flowers and swans. A lyre, the musical instrument of the god Hermes (!), is also included inside the heart at the center of this scarf (on the stamp above).
Hermès was established by Thierry Hermès in 1837 and was specialized first in the manufacture of leather equipment for horses (saddles, bags...) and later in the sale of luxury products (leather goods, ready-to-wear, perfumery, watches...).
The first "Carré Hermès", created in 1937 by Robert Dumas, called "Jeu des omnibus et Dames blanches", was inspired by the board game "Goose Game", very popular at that time.

Emission commune Autriche-Thaïlande

Austria-Thailand joint s/s issue

For the first time in their history, Austria and Thailand have issued a series of joint stamps in an interesting souvenir sheet dedicated to the 115th anniversary of the meeting in Vienna between the emperor Franz Joseph I and king Rama V.
It is the Austrian version of that sheet that was used on the cover below mailed from Vienna on January 21, 2013. Thank you very much Edna :-)
That sheet, designed by Silvia Moucka (pritn run : 170,000), issued on November 10, 2012, is composed of two stamps respectively reproducing photographs of King Rama V of Siam (€ 1.70) and Franz Joseph I of Austria (€ 0.70).

King Rama V or Chulalongkorn, who reigned on the Kingdom of Siam from 1868 to 1910, is known to have highly modernized his country and for having introduced important social (abolition of slavery in 1895...), educational and economic measures to his people, explaining why he was so beloved in his lifetime and why he is still today the subject of a cult for many Thai.
Rama V also opened his country to the world by doing for the first time several trips abroad, in particular in Europe on two occasions in 1897 and 1907.
It was during his first voyage in 1897 that Rama V visited several countries including France, Russia, Italy, United Kingdom, Switzerland or Austria.
The trident featured in the central margin on this souvenir sheet seems to be the gift that Rama V gave to Franz Joseph I during his visit to Vienna. In return, the Austrian Emperor offered the king a photograph of himself as well as a white Lipizzaner horse called "Siglavy Batavia"...
Finally, to note that the Swiss Post and the Thailand Post had already issued in 1997 some stamps about this historic visit of the King of Siam in Europe.

The vin jaune ("Yellow wine") is a unique white wine made of Savagnin grape, emblematic of the Jura vineyards (Eastern France), with also the "straw wine" in particular.
With a yellow gold color, this wine is produced in the vineyards of Château-Chalon, Arbois, L'Etoile and Côtes-du-Jura and is a component of the Franche-Comté region's gastronomy.
This wine, the only one in the world to develop so many flavors (nuts, dried fruit, spices...) during aging (6 years and 3 months), is packaged in an original bottle called "clavelin" containing 62cl (because a liter of grape juice is generally reduced to 62 cl of yellow wine at the end of its aging).

To raise awareness of this unique wine, a wine festival is held every first weekend of February (since 1997) in a different village where yellow wine or other Jura wines are produced.
Called "Percée du Vin Jaune", this festival celebrates the first tasting of yellow wine barrels before bottling.
The public is invited to go there with a glass in order to taste this wine yellow and other typical wines of Jura in many cellars open for the occasion.
The 17th edition of this "Percée du Vin Jaune" took place on 2 and 3 February 2013 in the village of Voiteur. A temporary post office was opened there and I was lucky to receive the special card above including a personalized "MonTimbraMoi" stamp ("Green Letter 20g" rate) and a postmark depicting a huge bunch of grapes !

That same cancellation was applied two times on the other side of this card above sent by my sister during her visit to Voiteur. A big thank you !!

As a reminder, Bertha von Suttner, famous for her book "Die Waffen Nieder !" ("Lay Down Your Arms !") published in 1889, became the first woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 1905, that is recalled on this stamp as well as on the FDC postmark showing the two sides of the Nobel medal.

Baies à Taïwan - Série courante

Berries on Taiwan's stamps - Definitive set

The Chunghwa Post had issued a first stamp series in early 2012 devoted to different berries. On January 17th 2013 (the year 102 in Taiwan), a new set of four stamps has been issued.
Two stamps of this series are included on the FDC (designed by Yu-syun Jian) below. Thank you very much George :-)
Ardisia squamulosa (NT$ 7, print run : 4,000,000) is a shrub found throughout Taiwan with red or purple sweetly tart berries when ripe.
Hylocereus undatus (NT$ 10, print run : 22,000,000) is known in Taiwan for its ellipsoid and edible berries called "dragon fruit".

Like many other postal administrations in Asia, the Post of Taiwan is regularly putting into circulation some "tourist" postmarks.
Two examples have been applied on this letter to the left, dedicated to Tamsui District, part of the New Taipei City in the north of the island.
The top's one features the Lovers bridge (started on February 14th 2003, Valentine's Day) well known by its beautiful sunset across the strait. The illustration of this postmark is close to the "Tamsui Fisherman's Wharf"'s logo.
The other cancellation refers to the Red Fort Antonio being part of a complex (Fort San Domingo), built from 1644 by the Dutch, a historical site in Taiwan, now a museum.

Grand Orchestre de Charité de Noël en Pologne

Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity in Poland

Merci beaucoup Kazimierz :-)

To celebrate the 21th Great Finale of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity ("Wielka Orkiestra Świątecznej Pomocy" ou "WOŚP" en polonais), the Polish Post has issued a new stamp on January 13, 2013.
It is that round self-adhesive stamp (permanent rate "A", i.e. currently 1.60 zł), issued in sheets of six stamps, that appears on the nice official FDC below with a cancellation from Warsaw. Thank you very much Kazimierz :-)

Year of the Snake in Singapore - FDC

After Korea, Taiwan, France and China, I'm happy to share with you the official FDC of the Singapore Post also devoted to this New Year of the Snake according to the Chinese calendar.
Thank you very much Terence for this cover regarding this series of three stamps, issued on January 4, 2013 :-)
To note the elegant FDC postmark including a snake's head as well as the hand cancellation from the post office of "Nanyang Estate", one of seven precincts of Jurong, the largest town in the west of the country.

As it was the case in previous years, the SingPost has issued a series of three stamps (above) as well as a souvenir sheet (2 stamps), designed by Leo Teck Chong, this last one (printed in France by Cartor Security Printing) including a metallic ink with application of UV varnish and hidden images...
The year 2013 (from February 10) is thus under the sign of the Snake (the 6th animal of the cycle) associated with the element "water". According to Chinese astrology, the traits of each sign shape the personality of people but also their lives or the events occurring in the year.
Among the famous people born in the Snake year : Bob Dylan, Franz Schubert or Mao Zedong.

The French Post has selected an emblematic painting of the tormented work of Chaïm Soutine (1893-1943), entitled "Landscape" for the issue of a new stamp released on general sale on January 28th 2013.
I was lucky to receive the FDC below regarding that stamp (€ 1.55, print run : 1,300,000) with a postmark, designed by Sarah Lazarevic, reproducing the artist's signature. Thank you very much Joël :-)
The preview sale of that stamp took place on 25 and 26 January 2013 in Paris ("Carré d'Encre") but also in Céret (Department of Pyrénées Orientales) where Chaïm Soutine moved from 1919 at the invitation of the painter Pierre Brune.

Born 120 years ago in present-day Belarus, Chaïm Soutine, with a Lithuanian Jewish origin, came to Paris from 1913 where he met with many painters of the Ecole de Paris.
Before some works featuring some skinned or gutted animals, evoking visions of his difficult childhood, Soutine painted many landscapes of the region of Cagnes-sur-mer as the one reproduced on this stamp dating from 1922-1923 (Museum of the Orangerie in Paris).
This work is emblematic of his vision and painting technique using a special palette of blazing colors, in an expressionism tormented style.
To note that the Israeli Post had already issued a stamp in 1974 devoted to Chaïm Soutine, reproducing a painting ("Girl in Blue") kept in a museum in Jerusalem.

Hommage à Bertha von Suttner en Rép. Tchèque

A tribute to Bertha von Suttner in Czech Rep.

Merci beaucoup Bret :-)
The Czech Post has not waited 2014 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of Bertha von Suttner (1843-1914), Austrian pacifist, journalist and novelist born in Prague.
On February 13, 2013, a stamp will indeed be issued in her honor on the occasion of the 170th anniversary of her birth. I'll talk further with the official FDC regarding that stamp that I was lucky to receive in preview !
Before that, I"m pleased to share with you another nice letter sent by registered mail on January 21, 2013 from Prague. Thank you very much Bret :-)

Bret has chosen several stamps including some already mentioned on this blog, like these definitive "Flowers" stamps or this self-adhesive stamp to the right (permanent rate "Z"), issued on May 26th 2010, reproducing a work entitled "Zodiac" by Czech artist Alfons Mucha on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of his birth.
The last stamp above (43 CZK) was issued on September 2, 2009 in a beautiful souvenir sheet (print run : 75,000) devoted to the protected area of the České středohoří uplands.
This region of the north-west of the country, a rich botanical area, is characterized by many volcanic conical hills like Hazmburk (with its two towers of a medieval castle at its top) and Milešovka (the highest peak of this region with 837 meters) featured on this stamp.

So here is above this FDC regarding this new stamp devoted to Bertha von Suttner (with cancellation mark) that will be issued in three days in Prague.
Bertha von Suttner, famous for her book "Die Waffen Nieder !" ("Lay Down Your Arms !") published in 1889, became the first woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 1905, that is recalled on this stamp as well as on the FDC postmark showing the two sides of the Nobel medal.
In 1875, she shortly became Alfred Nobel's secretary (shown by her side in a garden on the engraving to the left above) and would have convinced him to create the Nobel Peace Prize...
Bertha von Suttner has already been honored on many stamps issued in Germany (FRG and GDR), Austria or Sweden.

A tribute to stamp designer Ivan Strnad in Czech Rep.

As it is the case for several years, the Czech Post has devoted its first stamp of the year to the tradition of Czech stamp design ("Tradice české známkové tvorby"), to the designer Ivan Strnad this year.
It is that stamp (10 CZK) issued on January 20, 2013, designed by Pavel Sivko and engraved by Jaroslav Tvrdoň, that appears on the nice official FDC below with postmark from Prague. Thank you very much Bret :-)
Ivan Strnad (1926-2005) was a teacher in graphic arts at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague but also the designer of a hundred Czechoslovak and Czech stamps (3 stamps, the last one being issued in 1994 for the FIFA World Cup in the USA) as well as banknotes.

With that stamp, the Czech Post has paid tribute to some of his old stamp designs. His portrait is featured in the center with, to the left, an allegory that appeared on a postal stationery issued in 1975 dedicated to the launch of automated telephone in Czechoslovakia and, to the right, a nude woman who was included on the stamp issued in 1974 devoted to the organization of space communications Intersputnik.
These two allegories were however slightly adapted here and hold in their hands the I and S initials of Ivan Strnad.
The illustration of this FDC refers to another stamp, issued in 1968 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the World Health Organization.

To note that this stamp was issued in sheets of 30 stamps but also in a booklet of 8 stamps + 4 coupons.
The First Day cancellation, depicting a hand writing the Ivan Strnad's initials, was also applied on the commemorative sheet of the Czech Post above that Bret was kind enough to also send me !

Bonne année du Serpent !

Happy New Year of the Snake !

Tomorrow (February 10, 2013) is officially starting the Chinese Lunar New Year of Water Snake.
As already mentioned on this blog, more and more postal administrations issue stamps devoted each year to this New Year of the Chinese calendar, probably with some financial afterthought...
So welcome this year to Gibraltar, Lithuania and the Isle of Man.
No controversy this year regarding the stamp issued on January 5, 2013 by the China Post. You probably remember the stamp issued last year with a Dragon considered by some a little too threatening...

Merci d'avance à mes amis lecteurs sinophones !
Designed by Wu Guanying, this new stamp (1.20 yuan) devoted to the Year of the Snake (Gui Si Year) appears in 10 copies on this lovely registered cover with FDC postmarks from Shanghai. Thank you very much Wang Jia Yi :-)
That stamp, including a star-shaped notch on each side, has been issued in a souvenir sheet of 6 stamps as walle as in a sheet of 20 stamps (4x5 stamps).
I do not know what is the original packaging of this strip of 10 stamps above ?
I'd also be curious to know what is written in Chinese in the central margin of that same strip above. Thank you in advance to my Chinese speaking readers !
