Hommage à Oldřich Kulhánek, illustre créateur de timbres tchèques

On January 28, 2013, one of the greatest designers of Czechoslovak and Czech stamps died in Prague...
I'll talk about at the end of this post through a special commemorative sheet issued by the Czech Post.
Before that, I'm happy once again to share with you this nice registered letter mailed on March 6, 2013 from Prague. Thank you very much Bret :-)
I've already mentioned in a previous post the two se-tenant stamps to the right, issued on March 6, 2013, devoted respectively to the Aero HC2-Heli Baby helicopter and to the steam tugboat Péčko 18.

Bret has also used a stamp (4 CZK), issued on September 29, 2010, being part of the nice definitive series devoted to flowers, an Anemone ("sasanka" in Czech) here.
This definitive series was replaced in 2011 by a new stamp set (also engraved by Bohumil Šneider and designed by Jan Kavan) dedicated to the traditional folk architecture from different regions of the country.
On March 6, 2013, the Czech Post has thus issued a new value (14 CZK) being part of this series. It is that stamp that appears to the left of this cover above.

As usual, the Czech Post has issued the special sheet above regarding that definitive stamp.
No FDC cancellation has been issued, only the simple hand postmark from Prague on the first day of issue ("den vydání" in Czech) that was applied on this stamp.
This stamp depicts the front of a half-timbered cottage located in the village of Nový Hrozenkov, in eastern country, near the Slovakian border.
Built in 1835, this house is used ,since 1977, as a museum dedicated to the painter and illustrator Antonín Strnadel.

In a post published on this blog on October 27th 2012, I referred to a postal stationery issued on the occasion of an exhibition devoted to various works by the artist and Czech Post's stamp designer, Oldřich Kulhánek, organized from October 5 to November 11, 2012 in Jilemnice.
A special postmark was then issued, designed by Oldřich Kulhánek himself, featuring his initials (also included on the postmark at the top of the sheet above).
Oldřich Kulhánek died on January 28th 2013 and the Czech Post paid a tribute to him by issuing this commemorative sheet above on February 26th 2013 (referring to his birthday in 1940).
A characteristic Kulhánek style's stamp (and his meticulous work on hand's drawing), issued in 2009, was chosen on this sheet (400 years of King Rudoplh II's letter of majesty granting religious freedom to Bohemian people).

From 16 to 30 March 2013 took place the 23rd edition of the Rallye Aicha des Gazelles in the Moroccan desert, the only Rally Raid only open to women crews since 1990.
Contrary to other Rally Raids, this one adopts a different view of the racing, without speed (respecting the local people and the environment) and a navigation without GPS.
The security of the 150 crews (from 20 different nationalities) engaged in this 23th edition (4x4, Crossover, quads, buggy and RZR categories) is ensured through a system of satellite tracking.

A special postmark has been put into circulation on the first day of this Rally in Paris on March 16th 2013, featuring the official logo of the Rallye Aicha des Gazelles.
I was lucky enough to receive the two special covers above (thank you very much Roland !) and below (thank you very much Joël !) on which this cancellation was applied :-)
The four stamps used on the letter above are part of a "Vintage Cars" sheet consisting of 10 stamps, issued on May 9, 2000, on the occasion of the philatelic exhibition "PhilexJeunes" in Annecy.
These four stamps (with nominal values in both Francs and Euros) depict these cars : 4 CV (Renault), 203 (Peugeot), Chambord (Simca) and DS 10 (Citroën).

I've already mentioned on this blog the stamp in two copies above, issued on March 18th 2013, devoted to the inauguration of the Jacques Chaban-Delmas vertical-lift bridge in Bordeaux.
To note finally that at the occasion of the International Women's Day, the French Post has issued March 9, 2013 a booklet of 12 stamps entitled "Women's values, Values' Women" having that same Rallye Aicha des Gazelles for theme (La Poste being one of the Rally's technical partners).

Monumental arches and gates in Spain, new part...

In my last post published on this blog, I shared with you a cover from Spain franked with 4 of the 8 stamps of the booklet issued on January 2, 2013 by the Spanish Post devoted to different monumental gates, more or less old, located in different cities of the country.
Josep was kind enough to send me this second letter below with the four other stamps of this series !
Thank you very much Josep for this cover mailed on March 12, 2013 from Barcelona :-)
The Arch of the Gigantes in Antequera (Malaga), was built in 1585. Its semicircular arch and elongated stone voussoirs feature a relief with a vase of lilies, a lion and a castle. This arch is depicted on the stamp in the lower right below.

The Roman Arch of Cáparra (stamp in the upper left) is located in the ancient city of Cáparra (Cáceres), located in the Roman Vía de la Plata. This arch has four gates, each facing a cardinal point (the only of its kind in Spain).
The Puerta del Alcázar in Ávila (top middle stamp), also known as the Puerta del Mercado Grande, is one of the nine gates in the wall that gave access to the old city. It consists of two towers, high of more than 20 meters, connected by a Romanesque bridge arch. The battlements were added during its restoration in 1907.
The last stamp shows the Puerta de Toledo built in the early 19th century (neoclassical style) in Madrid. Composed of a central arch and two side gates with lintels, it was erected in honor of King Ferdinand VII but also to commemorate the independence of Spain against the French.

Monumental arches and gates in Spain - Special booklet

The first issue of the Spanish Post in 2013, put into circulation on January 2, is devoted to monumental arches and gates located in different cities of the country.
This is actually a booklet of 8 self-adhesive stamps (permanent domestic rate 'A') of which four have been used on the nice letter below mailed on March 5, 2013 from Barcelona. Thank you very much Josep :-)
The stamp in the lower right shows the Arch of the Capuchinos, also known as the Gate of Charles III (King of Spain from 1759 to 1788), built in 1786 in the town of Andujar (Jaén). Very simple, it consists of a central arch and two lateral trabeated ones.

The Roman Arch of Cabanes (stamp at the top left) was built in the 2nd century AD in the town of the same name (Castellón). Measuring 5.80 meters high and about 7 meters wide, it remains today only the two pillars and the arch.
The stamp at the top in the middle shows the Puerta de Castilla, in Tolosa (Guipúzcoa) dating from the 18th century (neo-classical style), built in the original setting as one of the five gates that gave access to the old walled city.
The last stamp is devoted to the Roman Arch of Medinaceli (Soria), built in the 1st century AD to give way into the city. It is also composed of a central arch and two lateral arches for pedestrians.

Timbres "RoboCar Poli" en Corée du sud

"RoboCar Poli" stamp set in Korea

After "Pucca" and "Pororo the Little Penguin", the Korean Post has issued on March 12, 2013, a new stamp series of 10 self-adhesive stamps devoted to Korean-Made animated series, to the characters of "RoboCar Poli" this time.
I've received this impressive letter franked in part with this souvenir sheet. Thank you very much Ji-Ho for this cover mailed on March 15, 2013 from Centum City, a district of the city of Busan :-)
This series (52 episodes currently), created in 2011, is devoted to the various interventions of rescue teams in Broom's town where many accidents occur.
"Poli", the police car (the leader of the rescue team), "Roy", the brawny fire truck, "Amber", the kind pink ambulance and "Helly", a small curious helicopter, are shown on the first four stamps as well as in the upper margin, with Jin, the rescue team operator.

The other stamps are devoted to "Dumpoo", a dump truck which is always sincere, "Cap", a taxi, "Posty", the post car, "Spooky", a tow truck which always likes to play, "School B", the school bus which is fond of children and "Cleany", a timid cleaning vehicle.
The Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), that has played a key role in the growth of Korea's trade, celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2012. Two stamps were issued (in the same sheet comprising 10 pairs) on June 14, 2012, depicting the logo of this 50th anniversary and the KOTRA's headquarters.
The five stamps above to the left are part of this series.
The last definitive stamp (30 won), issued on September 10, 2001, depicts the most northernmost Asian vine species (Vitis amurensis Ruprecht).

Pont levant à Bordeaux - Nouveau timbre

A new vertical-lift bridge in Bordeaux - Special stamp

To celebrate the recent opening of the "Jacques Chaban-Delmas" vertical-lift bridge in Bordeaux, the French Post has issued a special stamp ("Green Letter" postal rate) featuring this impressive work of engineering.
The preview sale of that stamp (print run : 1.2 million) took place on 16 and 17 March 2013 in Bordeaux as well as on March 16, 2013 at the "Carré d'Encre" in Paris, as usual.
Thank you very much Joël for this FDC regarding that stamp with a FDC cancellation (designed by Valérie Besser) from Paris :-)

This road bridge, which connects the two Bordeaux districts of Bacalan and Bastide, was built in almost 3 years and a half above the River Garonne.
Designed by architect Thomas Lavigne, this bridge is a technical feat by being one of the largest vertical-lift bridges in Europe with a length of 433 meters (central span of 117 meters) and four slender towers rising to 77 meters !
Its pulley system allows the central span to be lift in just 11 minutes. It is in high position sixty times a year to allow cargo boats or yachts, like the three-masted French barque "Le Belem" on that stamp, to pass under the bridge.
This bridge is named after Jacques Chaban-Delmas (1915-2000), former major figure of the Resistance, mayor of Bordeaux, President of the National Assembly and Prime Minister.
To note that another vertical-lift bridge "Gustave-Flaubert" (though longer and higher than this one) was inaugurated in 2007 in Rouen, but had not the honor of appearing on a stamp...

Chevaux par Joe Fafard au Canada

Horses by Joe Fafard in Canada

A big thank you Maryam for this interesting letter (as usual !) from Canada, mailed on November 29th 2012 from the city of Mankota (Province of Saskatchewan) !
The stamp to the right (international postal rate) is part of the annual series "Art Canada", issued on February 23, 2012 (consisting of three stamps), devoted this year to the sculptor Joe Fafard (born 1942), one of Canada's best known artists.
Joe Fafard is well-known for his works inspired by the prairie farms and villages of his childhood in Saskatchewan but also by his relatives or by artistic personalities and politicians.
The work shown here is entitled "Capillery" (kept at the Fine Arts Museum of Sherbrooke), a racing trio of lasercut steel and bronze horses, a maquette for the later work, "Running Horses".

To note that this is one of the first times that Canada Post is devoting its series "Art Canada" to sculptures, painters having been mainly honored in the past.
As in previous years, these stamps have been issued in the same souvenir sheet but also in booklets of six self-adhesive stamps (except the "cow" stamp issued in sheets of 16 gummed stamps).
Maryam had the very good idea to post her cover from the village of Mankota where a special postmark was applied.
This cancellation includes the slogan "The Heart of the West", probably the nickname of Mankota as well as two horses, which is circumstantial !
The last two stamps on the left, issued in 2007 and 2009, are part of the nice definitive series devoted to beneficial insects, a Lady Beetle (Hippodamia convergens) and a Monarch caterpillar (Danaus plexippus) here.

Bloc "Capitales Européennes" 2013 : Madrid !

After Copenhagen in 2012 and before Vienna in 2014, the French Post has issued in general sale on March 18th 2013, the 12th souvenir sheet of its "European Capitals" series started in 2002, dedicated this time to the capital of Spain , Madrid.
I've received the four First Day Covers below each franked with one of the four stamps (€ 0.63 each) included in this sheet, designed by Arnaud d'Aunay (print run : 1.2 million). Thank you very much Joël :-)
The FDC postmark from Paris dated March 15th 2013, designed by Claude Perchat, shows a bronze statue (by Antonio Navarro Santafe) on the Puerta del Sol, featuring the symbol of Madrid : a bear and a strawberry tree.

The first stamp above shows the imposing neoclassical facade of the Almuneda cathedral whose construction began in 1884 and ended only in 1984. The interior of the building is mainly designed with a neo-Gothic style.
Overshadowed a long time by Toledo, Madrid was indeed part of the bishopric of this city and therefore has no older cathedral.
This cathedral was consecrated by Pope John Paul II in 1993.

This Almuneda cathedral was built facing the Royal Palace that is depicted on the second stamp above.
Built between 1738 and 1755 during the reign of Philip V, this classical and baroque style building is the official residence of the King of Spain even though the current royal family lives mostly in the Palace of Zarzuela (in north-eastern Madrid).

The Palace of communication (stamp above), built between 1907 and 1919 on the Plaza de Cibeles, housed the headquarters of the Spanish Posts and Telegraphs until the late 20th century.
Built in a neo-Gothic style with its facade looking like a cathedral, this palace houses since 2007, the headquarters of the Madrid City Council.

With the Puerta del Sol, the Plaza Major (fourth stamp above) is probably one of the most famous and tourist attractions of the Spanish capital.
With 9 gates, this square was rebuilt in 1690 on arcades and is today home to many craft shops and cafes.
A statue of King Philip III (1578-1621) was erected on this Plaza Major.

Joel was kind enough to also send me the two engravings (blue and brown) above, each including two stamps of this series.
Phil@poste is printing this type of document (selling price : € 2.00) for almost every stamp issued.
The margins of this miniature sheet refer to Don Quixote and in particular to two works by great Spanish painters kept at the Prado Museum in Madrid : "Las Meninas" by Diego Velasquez and "Nude Maja" by Francisco Goya.

On February 25th 2013, Park Geun-hye officially began his 5-year term as President of the Republic of Korea.
Grand National Party's candidate, she actually won the presidential election of December 19th 2012 with 51.6% of the vote against the opposition candidate Moon Jae-in.
Daughter of former President Park Chung-hee (from 1962 to 1979), considered as a dictator as he came to power in a coup, Park Geun-hye has become the 11th President of the Republic of Korea (the sixth President of the sixth Republic) since independence in 1948 and especially the first woman to hold this office.

The Korean Post has issued on February 25th 2013, as for the previous presidents, a special stamp dedicated to the beginning of the mandate of Park Geun-hye.
Designed by Jiwon Mo, that stamp (270 won) was issued in 2,180,000 copies as well as in a souvenir sheet (print run : 211,000) composed of two stamps.
It is that souvenir sheet that appears on the First Day Cover above a postmark from Busan (Sasang District) dated March 4, 2013. Thank you very much Ji-Ho :-)
That stamp features a portrait of the president as well as the national flag (Taegeukgi) while the sheet's margins evoke the Blue House (Cheongwadae) at the top left, the presidential official residence in Seoul, and Gwanghwamun, at the top right, the main gate of Gyeongbokgung royal Palace (14th century) in Seoul.
This stamp indicates that it is the inauguration of the 18th President, which is true in term of mandates (some of the 10 previous presidents having held several).
Finally, to note on this letter that interesting ATM stamp (70 won) including the first three stamps ("Moon-wi") of the Korean postal history, issued in 1884...

Nouveau président tchèque - TAD spécial

Before the next issue of a stamp in his honor (as it was the case with his predecessors), the Czech Post has released on March 8th 2013, a special cancellation to mark the beginning of the term of the new president of the republic, Miloš Zeman.
Designed by Miloslav Bláha, this postmark was applied on the two letters below. Thank you very much Bret :-)
Associated with an unusual red ink, this cancellation was only issued on March 8, 2013 at the post office 12 located in the castle (hrad) of Prague where is located the official residence of the President of the Czech Republic.

This postmark features the flag of the President of the Republic, including the national motto "Pravda vítězí" ("Truth prevails"), as it was already the case on the cancellation issued on January 11, 2013 (shown in a previous post) devoted to the first presidential election in the country by direct universal suffrage.
Bret has used to the right a stamp (10 ), issued on October 14, 2009 to commemorate the 175th anniversary of the Czech national anthem "Kde domov můj ?" ("Where is my home ?").
This anthem is extracted from the play "Fidlovačka aneb žádný hněv a žádná rvačka", written by the composer František Škroup and playwright Josef Kajetán Tyl, played for the first time in the Estates Theatre in Prague on December 21, 1834.
The other stamp, with an attached coupon depicting the logo of the Czech Post, issued on September 3, 2008, reproduces an illustration by Josef Paleček for a children's book of Jaroslav Seifert (Nobel Prize for Literature in 1984).

Bret has used two other stamps on this second cover above including one (7.50 Kč), issued on February 9, 2005, showing a portrait of Václav Klaus, the previous Czech President of the Republic (from 2003 to 2013).
The other stamp, issued on December 12, 2007, is part of the definitive series devoted to the beauty of flowers, a Gaillardia flower here. To note that this stamp, engraved by Bohumil Šneider, is partly covered with an iridescent ink.

Emission commune France/Suède

France/Sweden joint stamp issue

In a post published on this blog on January 27, 2013, I shared with you the First Day Cover regarding the souvenir sheet issued on November 9, 2012 by the French Post, devoted to the opera "Gustave III or the Masked Ball".
As a reminder, this sheet was a joint issue with Sweden, issued in France during the last Salon Philatélique d'Automne held in Paris.
I was lucky enough to receive this other special FDC below issued by the Swedish Post (Posten) with the Swedish souvenir sheet to the right and the two French stamps to the left, canceled with their respective FDC postmarks !

The French FDC cancellation to the left, designed by Bruno Ghiringhelli, evokes the theme of this issue, the Masked Ball. The same for the Swedish postmark from Stockholm (not very clear with this sheet's dark background), designed by Gustav Martensson, depicting the mask worn by King Gustav III at this masked ball held at the Royal Opera in Stockholm (from a photograph found at the Swedish Royal Armoury).
The two joint stamps have been printed in offset and intaglio from a design by Gustav Martensson and an engraving by Lars Sjööblom (his signature appears under the Swedish sheet on the letter above !).
The background of the sheet differs from one country to another : the main staircase of the Opera Garnier in Paris for the French one and the Hall of the Royal Opera in Stockholm on the Swedish sheet.

I've also received the other letter above franked with this Swedish souvenir sheet, posted on March 14, 2013 from the district of Kista, the Sweden's Silicon Valley, located in the north-west of Stockholm.
The cancellation above also mentions the customer service of the Swedish Post, located in Kista.
These two stamps depict a portrait (dating from 1825) of the French composer Daniel-François-Esprit Auber (1782-1871) as well as a character in his opera "Gustave III or the Masked Ball" composed in 1833.
This opera, probably one of the most famous Auber's works, was inspired by the tragic death of King Gustav III of Sweden.
Created with the librettist Eugène Scribe, this opera is indeed devoted to the death of King Gustav III in 1792 a few days after having been fatally injured during a masked ball held at the Royal Opera House in Stockholm.

I've actually received this letter in the condition above with a post-it including the words "Filatelistämplat Brev" indicating that it is a letter specially made for stamp collectors.
This post-it thus protects the souvenir sheet as well as the hand postmark but is mainly used to prevent, as far as possible, the phenomenon of double cancellation !
It was almost successful here with this mechanical cancellation from the city of Malmö that has however been applied to a part of the upper margin of this sheet...
A very good idea in any case that, I hope so, will inspire the French Post !

Production fruitière en Algérie - FDC

Fruit production in Algeria - FDC

On March 3, 2013, the Algerian Post has issued a new series of two stamps devoted to fruit production in this country, in particular the production of cherries (20 Dinars) and apricots (15 Dinars).
Thank you very much Omar for this illustrated FDC regarding this set with a FDC postmark of Tlemcen :-)
To note this other hand cancellation from Imama (Tlemcen) dated March 2, 2013 while the preview sale of this series took place on 3 and 4 March 2013 ?

Designed by Chaker Mohammed Djamal, these two stamps are rather simple but quite interesting with a depiction of the fruits as well as the leaves and flowers associated.
Every region of Algeria has a very specialized fruit production : dates in Biskra, strawberries in Skikda, cherries in Kabylia, Médéa, Miliana and Tlemcen, apricots in the Aurès region and in particular in the city of N'gaous.

Pivoine sur timbre du Liechtenstein

Peony on stamp from Liechtenstein

Merci beaucoup Olivier :-)
After a 3-year cycle (from 2009 to 2011) devoted to butterflies, the Post of the Principality of Liechtenstein has started in 2012, a new definitive stamp series depicting flowers this time.
Three self-adhesive stamps "Garden Flowers", designed by Stefan Erne, have been issued on June 14, 2012, devoted respectively to dahlia (CHF 0.85), peony (CHF 1.40) and zinnia (5 CHF) flowers.
It is the beautiful stamp featuring a pink peony (Paeonia officialis) that was used on this cover mailed on March 15, 2013 from the town of Balzers, located in the south of the country. Thank you very much Olivier :-)

As for the series "Butterflies", this new one is 100% Made in Liechtenstein since it was printed by Gutenberg Druckerei AG in Schaan.
Since March 4, 2013, some new "promotional" postmarks (replacing the previous ones) were put into circulation in Liechtenstein, in the three towns of Nendeln, Triesen and Balzers.
It is this new postmark from Balzers that has been applied on this letter above, referring to the vineyards of the region and to the Gutenberg Castle, one of the most emblematic monuments of the city.
Located on a hill in the center of Balzers, this castle (dating from the 12th century) is one of the five castles of the Principality of Liechtenstein, but the only one (with the princely castle of Vaduz) to be still preserved today.
The next part of this definitive stamp series will be issued on June 3, 2013 and will be devoted to "Flowers of the Alps".

Bloc "Année du Serpent" à Taïwan

Year of the Snake m/s from Taiwan

I've already mentioned on this blog the two stamps issued on December 3, 2012 by the Chunghwa Post of Taiwan regarding the new Year of the Snake.
My collection is now complete since I was lucky to receive this new letter below this time franked with the souvenir sheet (NT $ 12) being part of this series !
Thank you very much Wei Yi for this nice illustrated cover mailed on February 21, 2013 from Kaohsiung :-)
To note the illustration to the left on this envelope reproducing one of the two stamps issued in 2000 to announce the previous Year of the Snake...

Wei Yi has also used an ATM stamp (nominal value of NT $ 5.00) issued from October 11, 2012 at the occasion of the "Rocupex 2012" philatelic exhibition that took place from 11 to 16 October 2012 in the district of Fongshan in the city of Kaohsiung.

Série EUROPA 2012 en Irlande

EUROPA 2012 stamp set from Ireland

Some European postal administrations have already issued their EUROPA 2013 stamps but it's a EUROPA stamp series issued in 2012 about which I will speak today.
As a reminder, the EUROPA theme chosen by the organization PostEurop in 2012 was "Visit..." and gave rise to rather nice series of stamps giving wanderlust !
This is the case for the set of two stamps issued on May 3, 2012 by the Irish Post (An Post) included on this letter mailed on March 11, 2013 from Dublin. Thank you very much YL Phuah :-)
To note the mechanical cancellation with a slogan encouraging users to manage and pay their bills on a dedicated website (mybills.ie) belonging to An Post...

These two stamps (55c, print run : 184,000 and 82c, print run : 148,000), designed by Steve Simpson from photographs, evoke both urban tourism and major maritime spaces.
The stamp to the left shows a view of Little Skellig Island (County Kerry) that, with the neighboring island of Skellig Michael, is located in the Atlantic Ocean, 12 km southwest of Valentia Island in the southwest of Ireland.
Little Skellig, very spectacular with its rocky peaks, is uninhabited and has an exceptional flora and fauna with in particular the world's second largest colony of gannet seabirds.
The other stamp (82c) is devoted to the Ha'penny Bridge, one of the most famous symbols of Dublin, the capital. Built in 1816 on the River Liffey, this bridge provides pedestrian access to many noted places of the city center.

Jeanne d'Arc -Emission commune France/Vatican

Joan of Arc - France/Vatican joint stamp issue

In a message posted on this blog on May 20, 2012, I already mentioned this joint stamp issued on May 11, 2012 by the postal administrations of the Vatican City and France, dedicated to the 600th anniversary of the birth of Joan of Arc (1412-1431).
It is that stamp (€ 0.75) that appears to the right of this interesting letter mailed from the Vatican City on February 28th 2013, the last day of Pope Benedict XVI's pontificate. Thank you very much François :-)
Joan of Arc is an important figure in the history of France, who became, in the French imagination, a symbol of the struggle for independence and integrity of our country.

The Vatican Post has issued that stamp in a sheetlet of 8 stamps with a right margin including a biography (in Italian and French) of Joan of Arc, condemned to death for heresy by the English in 1431, beatified in 1909 and canonized in 1920 by Pope Benedict XV.
That stamp reproduces a colored miniature (by an unknown author) showing Joan of Arc in armor with her banner, dating from 1450 and kept in the Museum of the History of France.
The other stamp (€ 0.10) is part of a series of three stamps, issued on November 15, 2010, dedicated to apostolic journeys of pope Benedict XVI in 2009. This stamp evokes his first trip to Africa, from 17 to 23 March 2009, in Cameroon and Angola, with a view of the Saint Anthony of Lisbon's Parish in Luanda here. This stamp was issued in a sheetlet of four stamps with illustrated margins like the one above, showing a part of the crowd during a Mass in Cameroon.
To note that these two stamps above were printed in France, in La Loupe by Cartor Security Printing and in Périgueux by Phil@poste.

Gares anciennes à Singapour - FDC

Historical Railway Stations in Singapore - FDC

A big thank you Terence for this beautiful FDC (as usual !) from Singapore, regarding a new series devoted to historical railway stations of the country :-)
On February 28, 2013, the SingPost has thus issued this interesting set of four stamps, designed by Brainwave Design Co., evoking the railway history and heritage in Singapore.
The project of railway construction in the country dates back to 1860s when materials and goods had to be moved to Keppel Harbour. This construction, however, began only in 1903 and the first railway system was opened in 1923.

This network allowed to connect and transport goods and people to Johor Bahru, Malaysia and then to Siam.
The two stamps above to the left are dedicated to the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station, whose Neoclassical and Art Deco style's building was inaugurated in 1932 by the then Governor Cecil Clementi, located in the district of the same name.
To note on this FDC, in addition to the FDC cancellation, these two other hand postmarks issued by the post office located in this district of Tanjong Pagar.
Following an agreement between the governments of Malaysia and Singapore, this railway station ceased operations in 2011. The terminus of the railway from Malaysia was been moved to the Woodlands train checkpoint, close to the border between the two countries.
The two other stamps to the right evoke the small station and railway line of Bukit Timah, typical of the stations built at the time to serve the suburban areas of Singapore.

Mineraux et roches - Bloc-feuillet de Croatie

Minerals and Rocks - m/s from Croatia

The Croatian Post has continued in 2012 its series devoted to minerals and rocks.
After the stone of Brač and the agate of Lepoglava in 2010, a new souvenir sheet of two round-shaped stamps was therefore issued on October 24, 2012, devoted this time to Roselite and Granite.
It is that sheet (print run : 30,000), designed by Željko Kovačić, that was used on the cover below mailed on March 4, 2013 from Opatija. Thank you very much Dragan :-)
To note that this sheet, with a glossy aspect, includes some mentions written with a silver coating and that the two stamps have a slight embossment to highlight the rocks depicted.

Means of communication in Moldova - new FDC

My first "Fauna" cover from Suriname !

Thank you very much Sherwin for allowing me to post today my first letter received from Suriname, mailed on February 26th 2013 from the capital, Paramaribo !
The postmark, with this curious year's format "20-13" includes the mention "Nieuwe Haven" in reference to the port of Paramaribo whose historic center is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
As a reminder or fyi, the Republic of Suriname (a former Dutch colony, independent since 1975) is a state located on the north coast of South America, having borders with Guyana, Brazil and French Guiana.

Sherwin has chosen different stamps dedicated to wildlife : birds, fish and butterflies.
The two identical stamps to the left (55c) are part of a series issued in 1977, devoted to different species of birds, a Grey-breasted Sabrewing (Campylopterus largipennis) here, a species of hummingbird living in the northern part of South America.
The same hummingbird appeared on another series issued in 2006 by the Post of Suriname (SurPost).
The stamp in the middle (2 Surinamese dollars) is part of a set of six se-tenant stamps issued in 2007, devoted to species of tropical fish, a Blue ring angelfish (Pomacanthus annularis) here.
The last stamp to the right (1.20 Surinamese dollars) is part of another series of 12 se-tenant stamps issued in 2008, featuring different species of butterflies, a Purple Sapphire (Heliophorus epicles) here.
