Timbres Sede Vacante 2013 au Vatican - FDC

Sede Vacante 2013 stamps from Vatican City - FDC

Since February 28th 2013 at 20:00, the Roman Apostolic See is officially vacant after the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI (a first since Gregory XII nearly 600 years ago !).
As usual since 1939 and the death of Pope Pius XI, the Vatican post office has issued on March 1, 2013, a special series of four stamps (from € 0.70 to € 2.50) including the words "Sede Vacante" ("the seat [being] vacant" in Latin).
These stamps can of course be used on covers only during this vacancy of the Holy See, that is to say until the conclave to elect a new pope (the previous vacancy in 2005 had lasted 17 days for example).

I was lucky enough to receive this extraordinary First Day Cover above regarding this new set of Sede Vacante stamps (print run : 230,000, design by Daniela Longo). Thank you very much François :-)
As for the previous six Sede Vacant stamp series (1939, 1958, 1963, 1978 (2 times) and 2005), these four stamps feature an angel holding the pavilion of the Roman church, symbolizing the vacancy of the Apostolic See.
This pavilion (Pontifical umbraculum replacing the papal tiara), together with the keys of St. Peter, is indeed the emblem of the Holy See when it is vacant. It is also included on the coat of arms of Cardinal Camerlengo (currently Tarcisio Bertone) who exercises the temporal sovereignty of the Holy See during a sede vacante.
To note that the other Vatican City's stamps can however still be used on mail during this vacancy period.
