Hommage à Verdi et Wagner en Moldavie

Tribute to Verdi and Wagner in Moldova

Merci beaucoup Sergio :-)
The year 2013 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of the two greatest opera composers of the 19th century, Italian Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) and German Richard Wagner (1813-1883).
Many postal administrations have already issued stamps in their honor this year : Serbia, Vatican City, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina (Sarajevo and Republika Srpska), Portugal, Hungary, Monaco...
On August 2, 2013, the Post of Moldov has issued two stamps devoted to these two composers in a series of four stamps featuring some famous music world's figures.
I was lucky enough to receive the two official FDC below regarding the four stamps of this series, with postmarks from Chişinău. Thank you very much Sergio :-)

The two stamps above are respectively devoted to Verdi (L 4.50 - rate for a shipment to France by land) and Wagner (L 5.40 - rate for a shipment to France by air).
The work of the romantic composer Verdi, composed mainly of Operas (Nabucco, La Traviata, Aida...) is considered as one of the most important in the history of musical theater.
But Verdi, through the influence of his art, was also an iconic figure of the Risorgimento, the process of unification of the Italian peninsula.
Wagner also holds an important place in the history of Western music through his operas (Tristan and Isolde, Parsifal, Ring of the Nibelung...).
Wagner's life is intimately linked to the King Ludwig II of Bavaria's one, his patron and protector from 1864.

The other two stamps (L 1.75 each) of this series, included on the second FDC above, pay tribute to two Moldovan folk music's artists and singers : Angela Păduraru (1938-1995) and Ion Bass (1933-2005).
To note that the postal rate above (L 3.50) corresponds to the shipment of printed matter to France by land (hence the blue ink mark "Imprimés" instead of "Par Avion").
These two singers were soloists at the Chişinău Philharmonic Orchestra and at the folk music orchestra "Folclor" of the national radio and television (founded in 1968).
