Carnet "Patrimoines de France" - FDC

"Heritages of France" booklet - FDC

On September 9, 2013, the French Post has issued a new booklet entitled "Heritages of France" being part of its series "La France comme j'aime" ("The way I like France") started in 2009 (with two booklets devoted to Flora).
This booklet consists of three parts (4 stamps each) devoted to three different themes : Houses of famous people, Castles and Archaeological heritage.
The preview sale of this booklet (design by Stéphane Humbert-Basset, printing run : 4,000,000) took place on 6 and 7 September 2013 in Paris but also in nine other cities of France concerned by some of the stamps issued.
My city of Lyon was one of these cities since one of the 4 stamps "Houses of famous people" is featuring the house of the brothers Lumière in Lyon !

That stamp is at the top left of this first part above with the profile of Louis and Auguste Lumière in the margin. This Art Nouveau villa (which now houses the "Institut Lumière") demonstrates the success of the two inventors of cinema.
The other three stamps are dedicated to the Buffon Museum in Montbard (Côte d'or) where the famous naturalist of the 18th century wrote 36 volumes of the "Histoire Naturelle", to the house of the writer George Sand in Nohant (Indre) in which she received illustrious guests (Chopin, Liszt, Balzac...) and to the house of Georges Clémenceau (nicknamed the "Tiger"), two times head of governement, in Saint-Vincent-sur-Jard (Vendée), where he retired from 1920 after his defeat in the presidential election...

The section devoted to the extraordinary diversity of castles and fortresses in France, appears on the second first day cover above.
The famous fortress of Carcassonne (Aude) and its ramparts, a masterpiece of the Gallo-Roman and medieval military architecture, was largely restored in the 19th century by Viollet-le-Duc.
The castle of La Motte Tilly (Aube) was built in the 18th century for the abbe Terray who became controller general of finances of king Louis XV.
The castle of Carrouges (Orne) and its pink façade made of brick and granite, is an exceptional witness of seven centuries of history (it was rebuilt after the Hundred Years War).
The Castle of Champs-sur-Marne (Seine-et-Marne), and its bedroom of honor here, is a jewel of classical architecture of the Age of Enlightenment and of French refinement !

Four archaeological sites were finally selected to be featured on the four last stamps above.
The alignments of Carnac (Morbihan) are the largest megalithic ensemble (menhirs and dolmens dating from the Neolithic period) of its kind in the world.
The Antiques of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence (Bouches-du-Rhône), the triumphal arch and the mausoleum, are part of the remains of the Gallo-Roman city of Glanum.
The Gallo-Roman villa of Montcaret (Dordogne) consists, among other things, of exceptional mosaic pavements (the bottom of a pool here with marine animals patterns) discovered in the early 20th century.
The remains of another Gallo-Roman villa, located in Montmaurin (Haute-Garonne), one of the largest in France (6,000 square meters), are finally depicted on the last stamp above.
