La guerre de 1812 au Canada

The War of 1812 in Canada

On June 20, 2013, Canada Post has continued its series devoted to the 200th anniversary of the Anglo-American War of 1812 with the issue of two se-tenant stamps paying this time tribute to both military cunning with Charles de Salaberry (1778-1829 ) and to civilian courage through Laura Secord (1775-1868).
These two stamps (permanent domestic rate, design by Susan Scott) were used to the right on this interesting letter below mailed on July 4, 2013 from the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake (Ontario) where First Day of Issue of this series took place. Thank you very much Maryam :-)
To note the special postmarks depicting the clock tower of this town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, built in 1922 to honor the fallen soldiers during the first World War.
This letter then passed through the mail sorting plant (L8E 5A8) of the nearby town of Stoney Creek.

Maryam chose to send this cover from this city as it is in this region, south of Lake Ontario, now located on the border with the USA, that Laura Secord gained her fame on June 22, 1813...
After having captured Fort George in May 1813, allowing them to take control of the two banks of the Niagara River, American troops were preparing a new secret plan of attack on June 21, 1813. Laura Secord then traveled about 30 km to warn the British and Canadian forces allowing them to prepare and win an ambush (at Beaver Dams) against the Americans on June 24...
Charles de Salaberry was the hero of the Battle of the Châteauguay (Quebec) where, on October 26, 1813, he defeated the American forces who had just crossed the border near Montreal.
Salaberry is depicted on that stamp in his uniform of the Canadian Voltigeurs, the infantry unit he led during this War.
The Battle of the Châteauguay is now considered as one of the most important feats of Canadian history.
