Hommage à Marguerite Duras en France

Tribute to writer Marguerite Duras in France

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Marguerite Duras (1914-1996), the French Post has released in preview on April 4, 2014 a special stamp dedicated to one of the greatest French writers of the second half of the 20th century.
A big thank you Joël for this great FDC from Paris ("Carré d'Encre") below regarding that stamp (€ 1.10, print run : 1,000,000) designed by Sophie Beaujard and engraved by Claude Jumelet :-)
Sophie Beaujard (who has signed this letter !) was inspired by a photograph of Marguerite Duras when she was young in Indochina, far from the image we have of her at a slightly older age...
To note that the general sale of that stamp will curiously take place only from May 19, 2014...

Born Marguerite Donnadieu in 1914 near Saigon, Indochina (his father was school headmaster), she later took the pen name of Duras, in reference to this town in Lot-et-Garonne where was located the family's home.
The preview sale of that stamp was also held on April 4, 2014 in the castle of this city.
Marguerite Duras published her first book in 1943 ("The impudent") and "The Sea Wall" in 1950 that will reveal her writer's talent (this novel tells her childhood in Indochina).
But she will know an international reputation by publishing "L'amant" ("The Lover") that will receive the Prix Goncourt in 1984 and will be later adapted for the cinema. Translated into 35 languages, it will be sold almost 2.5 million copies.
Overturning conventions and renewing the romance genre, Marguerite Duras, whose literary work is sometimes criticized, was also a playwright, screenwriter ("Hiroshima mon amour" in 1959) and film director.
