Nicknamed the "City of the 100 churches", Poitiers has a rich heritage, in particular many civil and religious buildings dating from the 12th century.
This is the case for the Palace of the Counts of Poitou and Dukes of Aquitaine featured on that stamp, a beautiful medieval testimony of the architectural style of the Angevin Gothic.
Between 1192 and 1204, Eleanor, Duchess of Aquitaine (1122-1204) built the Great Hall, which then replaced an older room. This room was probably the largest of the time in Europe.
This building houses the Palace of Justice of Poitiers since the French Revolution.
Eleanor of Aquitaine, who was Queen of France (wife of Louis VII) and then Queen of England (wife of Henry II Plantagenet), settled indeed her court in Poitiers and deeply marked the history of this region.
The attached label of this stamp was designed from a portrait of Eleanor of Aquitaine appearing on a fresco in the Chapel of St. Radegund in Chinon.
