50 ans de l'INSERM en France

INSERM 50 years in France

By decree of July 18, 1964, the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (INSERM in French) was created in France, a biomedical and public health research institution, under the dual supervision of the Ministry of higher Education and Research and the Ministry of Health.
This Institute, which then replaced the National Institute of Hygiene, has since dedicated to the study of human health with purpose is to invest the field of basic and applied biomedical research in different areas : cell biology, molecular biology, genetics, physiology, pathophysiology, gene therapy, epidemiology, medical imaging...

INSERM now includes 10 thematic institutes, 289 research units with an annual budget of nearly 900 million euros (70% of state subsidies).
List of 10 institutes : Neurosciences, cognitive sciences, neurology and psychiatry - Cancer - Microbiology and Infectious Diseases - Circulation, metabolism, nutrition - Immunology, hematology, pneumology - Public Health - Health Technologies - Molecular and structural bases of living organisms - Cell biology, development and evolution - Genetics, genomics and bioinformatics.
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of INSERM, the French Post has issued on July 7, 2014, a special stamp (€ 0.66, print run : 1.200.000) designed by Sylvie Patte & Tanguy Besset.
It is that stamp that was used on the two First Day covers of July 3, 2014 from Paris above and below. Thank you very much Joël and Joël :-)
To note the special envelope above with INSERM's header !

The FDC cancellation, also designed by Sylvie Patte & Tanguy Besset, reproduces the logo of the 50th anniversary of INSERM.
The stamp (image taken at the Institut de la Vision in Paris) shows mouse's motor nuclei marked by Brainbow technique, which allows to visualize neuronal circuits by creating a multicolor labeling of brain...
This Brainbow strategy conducts the expression of random combinations of fluorescent proteins of different colors (cyan, yellow, red...) in neurons.

The preview sale of that stamp also took place on July 3, 2014 in Lyon, where are located several research centers (oncology, neurosciences) labeled by INSERM.
The two First Day covers above and below include the FDC postmark from Lyon.
To note the stamp above (issued in sheets of 42 stamps) with its dated corner of March 5th 2014.

The special card below was also published by the INSERM on this occasion, franked here with that same stamp and the FDC cancellation from Lyon.
This card includes the INSERM logo (and its slogan "Health Research since 1964"), the 50th anniversary's one as well as a QR-code allowing to reach the special website dedicated to INSERM's history.

The other side of this card below shows various buildings housing Inserm units INSERM as well as leading researchers having marked the history of this Institute such as the doctor and biophysicist Louis Bugnard (1901-1978), creator of the office for protection against ionizing radiation, Philippe Lazar (born 1936), statistician and epidemiologist, Director General of INSERM between 1982 and 1996.
A portrait of biologist virologist Françoise Barré-Sinoussi (born 1947), Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2008, is also included to the right. She participated in the discovery of HIV in 1983 at the Pasteur Institute.
