With František Drtikol, Josef Sudek, Jaroslav Rössler or Eugen Wiškovský, Jaromír Funke (1896-1945) is part of the Czech personalities of interwar's avant-garde photography...
While France, Germany and Russia are considered as the main centers of photography at that time, Czechoslovakia known also many important and original works having greatly contributed to the development of the art of photography.
This is certainly what the Czech Post wanted to remind us by issuing in its "Arts" series on November 5, 2014, a special stamp reproducing a photograph by Jaromír Funke entitled "Solitude and Spectacles", taken around 1924.
I was lucky (thank you Bret !) to receive the official FDC below with postmark from Prague, about that stamp (29 CZK) designed by Zdeněk Ziegler.

Jaromír Funke, founder (with Josef Sudek and Adolf Schneeberger) of the Czech Photographic Society in 1924, was indeed a pioneer of photography in his country, abandoning the picturesque views of landscapes and genre scenes for abstract compositions.
In his still lifes made of glass blocks, bottles or negatives, the shadows of the background objects play the lead role (such as this pair of glasses on that stamp).
The themes of light, transparency and reflections of light reached their peak in his "Abstract photographs" created between 1927 and 1929.
Funke also created the first photographs in the spirit of constructivism and new reality and was the first Czech photographer to create surrealist works.
The engraving on this envelope to the left was inspired by a photograph entitled "Plates" (1923).

Thank you also Bret for this First Day sheet above regarding that stamp.
The FDC cancellation was inspired by another Jaromír Funke's photograph entitled "Frames" (1924), being part (such as "Plates") of the collections of the famous MoMA in New York.

Flora, fauna, large reef in New Caledonia

To illustrate its new souvenir sheet dedicated to flora and fauna, the Office of Post and Telecommunications (OPT) of New Caledonia chose the Caledonian mining scrubland, a unique habitat featuring shrubs and herbaceous plants flourishing on mineral rich (nickel, iron...) and nutrient poor soils.
It is this souvenir sheet, consisting of 3 stamps (110 XPF each), issued on September 8, 2014, which was used on the letter below, sent from Nouméa on November 17, 2014.
To note the special OPT's cachet issued during the last "Salon Philatélique d'Automne" in Paris, referring to the Louvre Pyramid, Caledoscope (the name of the New Caledonia Philatelic Agency) and a cagou, the bird symbol of the island, with its "I love NC" slogan.

On this souvenir sheet (print run : 50,000) designed by Jean-Paul Veret-Lemarinier, a bird species and two plant species are depicted, characteristic from this mining scrubland, an ecosystem covering 23% of Caledonian territory, sheltering a wide diversity of wildlife (insects, birds, reptiles) and home to 1,100 flora species (88% of which are endemic).
The Red-throated Parrotfinch (Erythrura psittacea) is a sparrow, with an emerald green plumage and a dark red mask, living only in the bushes of this island.
Deplanchea sessilifolia and Grevillea gillivrayi are shrubs (8 to 10 meters in height) characterized by bell-shaped purple and yellow flowers and pink, yellow or red bottle brushe-shaped flowers.
The other top right stamp (75 XPF, print run : 50,000) is part of a series entitled "Landscapes and animals of New Caledonia" (4 stamps) issued on June 6, 2014, devoted here to the Large reef of Koné (from a photograph of Sébastien Mérion).
New Caledonia is characterized by its lagoons, delimited by the longest continuous coral reef in the world, six of which being inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2008 for the exceptional diversity of their reefs and associated ecosystems.

A musical stamp from Switzerland !

Bhutan had issued in 1972 the first "talking" stamps, a set of stamps designed from vinyl and recalling the shape of the discs of the time. Some of these stamps indeed produced sounds (the national anthem of Bhutan...) when placed on a turntable...
After a few innovations in the past (embroidery stamps, wooden stamps...) and in particular the miniature sheet "Goldvreneli" issued in 2013 (designed with real gold), the Swiss Post has issued this time, on September 4, 2014, a special vinyl disc-shaped stamp.
Contrary to Bhutan stamps, this Swiss miniature sheet was designed by Thomas Rathgeb from a cardboard on which a part was printed (by Joh. Enschedé) with a special lacquer.

It is that large format sheet (168 x 137 mm) which appears on the cover above sent on November 11, 2014 from Lausanne. To note the top right postmark issued especially by the Swiss Post during the last "Salon Philatélique d'Automne" in Paris.
This sheet is not only featuring a long playing (33 rpm) but also a "Thorens TD184" turntable dating from 1961. Thorens (founded in 1883) is a Swiss manufacturer of high-end audio equipment and particularly turntables.
The central part (round shaped) of this souvenir sheet (including the word "Helvetia" and the nominal value of CHF 5) is pre-cut and gummed and can therefore be used as a normal stamp.

As shown on this video, this souvenir sheet can indeed produce music when used as a classic vinyl record on a turntable !
An instrumental version (by the Gürbetal brass band) of the "Swiss Psalm", composed in 1841 by the Cistercian monk Alberich Zwyssig (1808-1854), that became definitively the Swiss national anthem in 1981, can then be listened.

Romania-Croatia joint stamp issue : Churches

On November 14, 2014, the two postal administrations of Romania and Croatia issued a joint set consisting of two stamps devoted to the theme "Spirituality - Fortified Churches".
These fortified buildings were very important in the past, protecting both religious but also people from outside attacks.
These two stamps are respectively dedicated to the Evangelical Church of Cristian, Romania and the St. Nicolas Church of Komiža, Croatia.
As it is the case in some countries (Singapore for example), the Romanian Post had the good idea to release a joint FDC including the two Romanian stamps and the two Croatian stamps canceled with their respective FDC postmarks from Bucharest and Zagreb.

I was very lucky to receive this beautiful mixed FDC above, sent by registered mail from Bucharest. Thank you very much Mihnea :-)
These two joint stamps have been designed from photographs by Paolo Monfardin (Church of Komiža) and Mihai Vămăşescu (Church of Cristian).
The two postal administrations have however used these photographs in a different way : different formats and a broader view on Croatian stamps.
The Croatian Post has issued these two se-tenant stamps in a same souvenir sheet (print run : 35,000) while the Romanian Post has declined this series in sheet of 32 stamps, in sheetlet of 8 stamps + 1 vignette and in a souvenir sheet (limited edition of 321 copies).
The Evangelical Church of Cristian (located in Transylvania, 13 km from Brasov), an historical monument, was built in the 13th century in a Gothic style under the influence of the Cistercian monastery in Carta. The old church, dedicated to St. Nicolas, was demolished in 1839 and the present church was consecrated in 1841. Its tower was strengthened in 1903 and equipped with a high roof including four spires at each corner.

Mihnea was kind enough to send me this 2nd FDC above including to the right the stamp (L 1.00) of that same joint series, dedicated to St. Nicolas Church in Komiža, located on the island of Vis, in the Adriatic Sea.
This small town of Komiža is known for its vineyards, fishermen and hosts many tourists in recent years.
The fortified church (also a monastery) of Komiža, built in the 13th century by Benedictine, is the oldest building of its kind in Dalmatia and all over Croatia.
Mihnea also used to the left a stamp (L 2.10) being part of the EUROPA series issued on April 30, 2013 (topic : postal vehicles).

Marin Čilić honoured in Bosnia (HP Mostar)

The Croatian Post had celebrated the victory of Goran Ivanišević at Wimbledon in 2001, by dedicating him a special stamp issued on August 31, 2001.
Another Croatian tennis player, Marin Čilić, also won this year a Grand Slam tournament, the US Open, defeating the Japanese Kei Nishikori in final on August 25, 2014.
But curiously, no stamp has so far been reported in Croatia in his honor...
Meanwhile, it is in Bosnia and Herzegovina that a stamp was devoted to him, issued on September 28, 2014 by the Croatian Post of Mostar (HP Mostar).
That stamp (1.50 BAM, design : Marin Musa) was issued in a sheet of 8 stamps + 1 central vignette.

The horizontal strip in the middle of one of these sheets, composed of two stamps and the central vignette, was used to frank the nice letter above mailed on November 12, 2014 from the town of Vitez. Thank you very much Edin :-)
Marin Čilić is indeed born in 1988 in the town of Medjugorje in Bosnia and Herzegovina, located 25 km southwest of Mostar.
After an apparition of the Virgin in 1981, Medjugorje has become an important place of pilgrimage and the Croatian Post of Mostar issues each year a stamp dedicated to this pilgrimage.
The First Day sale of that stamp took therefore logically place in this city of Medjugorje.
Professional player since 2006, Marin Čilić won 13 tournaments in his career that was disrupted in 2013 following a conviction for doping...

500 years of Andreas Vesalius in Czech Rep.

Merci beaucoup Bret :-)
The postal administrations of Belgium and Portugal had already issued in April 2014 a beautiful joint souvenir sheet (consisting of 5 stamps) dedicated to the 500th anniversary of the birth of Andreas Vesalius (1514-1564), considered as the father of modern anatomy.
Andreas Vesalius, born in Brussels, was a physician, anatomist and humanist, and is considered as one of the greatest Belgian figures in history.
On November 5, 2014, it is the Czech Post which has this time commemorated this anniversary by issuing a special stamp (25 CZK), designed by Zdeněk Ziegler and engraved by Václav Fajt.
It is that stamp which appears on the first day cover below with postmarks from Prague. Thank you very much Bret :-)

The stamp depicts an illustration featuring Vesalius, extracted from the human anatomy treaty "De humani corporis fabrica" ("On the fabric of the Human body") published by Andreas Vesalius in Basel in 1543.
This treaty (663 pages in Latin, 200 illustrations) is now considered as one of the greatest scientific works ever made and as the founder book of modern anatomy.
Another detailed illustration (muscular system) from this book is engraved to the left on this envelope.
Some stamps devoted to Vesalius have been issued in the past, particularly in Belgium with a stamp similar to this Czech stamp issued in 1964...

Thank you also Bret for the First Day Sheet above regarding that same stamp !

Fifty years of tourism in Singapore

So much progress has been made in 50 years by this small state, today an economic power in Southeast Asia, ultra-modern, one of the most important commercial and air hubs in the world.
The city-state also has the largest theaters and sport equipments, many shopping centers, while focusing on the protection of the environment through its many green spaces...
In short, everything is done to ensure that tourism is developing rapidly and the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) has an objective of welcoming 17 million tourists in 2015 (tourism will represent 8% GDP) for a turnover of 30 billion Singapore dollars and the creation of 250,000 jobs.

Singapore will be then positioned as one of the top 20 tourist destinations in the world !
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the start of the tourist development in the country, the SingPost issued on October 31, 2014, an interesting (and very colorful) series of 5 stamps (1st Local to $ 1.30).
Thank you very much Terence for this First Day Cover above with this complete "Tourism50" set :-)
Designed by Alynn Teo, this series is featuring some of the main tourist attractions in Singapore such as its  gastronomy (satay, spicy chilli crab...) and hawkers, Marina Bay (Esplanade-Theatres), the cable car connecting Mount Faber to Sentosa resort island, Orchard Road (the main shopping street), the statues of the Merlion (the half lion - half fish symbol of the country) and Sir Stamford Raffles (the founder of the country in the early 19th century), the "Gardens by the Bay" Park...

The other side of this envelope above with an unusual additional ATM stamp ($ 0.33) and a hand postmark from a post office of Sembawang, an area in the north of the main island of the country.
To conclude about this tourism's topic, to note that the famous guide "Lonely Planet" has appointed Singapore as the top country to visit in 2015 (as a reminder, the country will celebrate next year the 50th anniversary of its independence).

90 years of "La Posta" in Strasbourg

A short post to share with you this special cover below posted on November 15, 2014 from the Alsatian capital, Strasbourg. Thank you very much Olivier :-)
On the occasion of a multi collection exhibition held that day at the St. Anthony Parish in Strasbourg, a temporary post office offered the public a postmark and one (or more ?) personalized "MonTimbraMoi" stamp, with a permanent "Green Letter 20g" rate.

These cancellation and stamp were devoted to the 90th anniversary of the philatelic association "La Posta", part of the House of the Associations in Strasbourg.
A dove carrying a letter with the mention "1924-2014" appear on the postmark while the personalized stamp depicts the famous Alsatian pastry, Gugelhupf, with 90th birthday's candles.

International Year of Crystallography in Slovenia

Under the auspices of UNESCO and the International Union of Crystallography, 2014 was declared the International Year of Crystallography by the United Nations.
This year was chosen because it coincides with the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Prize in Physics awarded to Max von Laue (1879-1960) for his work on the X-ray diffraction by crystals (allowing the most accurate analysis of atomic and molecular structures).
The main objective of this International Year of Crystallography is particularly to increase public awareness of the importance of crystallography and its impact on technological and medical developments.
Several postal administrations have issued stamps dedicated to this year of crystallography : India, Israel, Poland, Switzerland, Portugal, Slovakia, Liechtenstein or Moldova (personalized stamps).

The two postal administrations of Belgium and Slovenia chose to issue a joint souvenir sheet (2 stamps) about this topic, respectively issued on June 10, 2014 (preview sale on June 7, 2014) and May 30, 2014.
It is the project of the Belgian graphic designer Clotilde Olyff (in collaboration with Professor Luc Van Meervelt, member of the Belgian National Committee for Crystallography) that was chosen for this joint issue, the Slovenian version being used on the letter above sent on November 7, 2014 from Ljubljana. Thank you very much Petra :-)
This souvenir sheet illustrates snow crystals and the principle of diffraction, the two stamps showing in detail the arrangement of water molecules in two variants of an ice crystal.
To note that the Slovenian Post, however, has not completely taken over the Belgian concept (nor its high nominal value of € 7.74 !) since the Slovenian sheet was printed (by Joh. Enschedé Security Print) on normal gummed paper while the two Belgian stamps were printed on a semi-transparent self-adhesive base (a first in Belgium).

Tribute to painter J. Schikaneder in Czech Rep.

To mark the 90th anniversary of the death of Czech painter Jakub Schikaneder (1855-1924), the Czech Post has released on November 5, 2014, a special stamp reproducing one of his works, entitled "Street in winter" (1900 -1910), kept at the Kodl gallery in Prague, which is also a prestigious art auction house in Czech Republic.
It is that stamp (CZK 25), engraved by Václav Fajt, which is on the official FDC below with a postmark from Prague. Thank you very much Bret :-)
The engraving to the left on this envelope is inspired from another Schikaneder's painting entitled "Seating woman in a white bonnet" (1885).

The style of Jakub Schikaneder, famous painter of the 19th and early 20th century, is unique and does not belong to any particular art school (Schikaneder traveled extensively in Europe, particularly in Paris and Munich).
His paintings reflect the simple and sometimes cruel reality of existence, featuring poverty, love, ordinary and sweet moments of everyday life...
His most famous work, "A Murder in the House" ("Vražda v domě") was painted in 1890, an evocative painting of a young woman murdered in the yard of a house in Prague, surrounded by a group of onlookers.
On his paintings, Jakub Schikaneder often chooses the small dark streets of Prague with an atmosphere of start or end of the day, in winter for most of them.

On most of Jakub Schikaneder's works, we can see a lantern at the corner of the street, a stagecoach or passersby.
This is the case on this other work of Schikaneder, "Winter Evening in town" (1907-1909) reproduced on the stamp below issued on November 27, 1989 by the Post of Czechoslovakia.
On this stamp, already engraved by Václav Fajt (!), one can see a stagecoach on the left, probably the one that inspired the FDC cancellation of November 5, 2014 above...

As usual, Bret was kind enough to send me the First Day sheet above regarding this new stamp !

Gorillas on my first cover from Uganda !

The Pan-African Postal Union (PAPU), a specialized agency of the African Union (AU), was created in 1980 to coordinate the development of postal services on the continent.
This postal institution, a restricted union of the UPU, has its headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania, and has currently a membership of 43 countries (while there are 54 countries in Africa).
To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the creation of PAPU, the Ugandan Post (Posta Uganda) issued on January 18, 2011, a series of 20 stamps devoted to the theme of Gorillas (which relation with this postal organization ?).
Uganda is one of the few African countries to house a colony of Gorillas, especially the Mountain Gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei), one of two subspecies of the Eastern Gorilla.

About 400 Mountain Gorillas live in south-western Uganda, in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, and another 400 animals in the two neighboring countries (Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo).
Two stamps (400 Shillings each) of this series were used to frank this nice cover sent on October 20, 2014 from the city of Entebbe. Thank you very much Faisal :-)
Entebbe, located on the shores of Lake Victoria, is the former capital of the country (when Uganda was a British protectorate) and the location of the State House, the official residence of the President of the Republic.
The other two top stamps are part of two definitive series (14 stamps each) devoted to reptiles (a Nile crocodile here) and flowering plants (Calliandra haemotocephala here), respectively issued on August 21, 1995 and June 22, 2005.
The last stamp in the lower left is part of a series of 4 stamps, issued on July 24, 2000, dedicated to the new millennium, with a focus on education for all here.

EUROPA 2014 stamp set from Switzerland

On May 8, 2014, the Swiss Post has released two se-tenant stamps being part of the EUROPA issues, devoted this year to the theme of the national musical instruments.
The designer of this series, Marc Weller, has perfectly imaged this topic by choosing three typical Swiss instruments : Hackbrett, Schwyzerörgeli and Alphorn.
It is this EUROPA series (sheet's bottom with mentions in German, French, Italian and English in the margin) that was used on the cover below sent on November 11, 2014 from Lausanne.
The Alphorn is the traditional Swiss instrument by excellence, an impressive instrument by its size (3.40 meters drilled in a spruce trunk deformed by nature) and its natural sound (it may sound through valleys on a distance of more than 8 km).

The Hackbrett (or hammered dulcimer) is a stringed musical instrument (strings are stretched over a trapezoidal sounding board with 2 hammers), belonging to the zither family, typical of Germanic countries (Bavaria, Austria, Switzerland).
It was first mentioned in 1447 in an official document in Zurich and would have been introduced into the country by gypsies.
In Switzerland, Hackbrett is an instrument used in folk music, especially in the regions of Appenzell (trapezoidal shape with 125 strings), Upper Valais and Toggenburg.
A third instrument, the Schwyzerörgeli or "Schwyz accordion", is the link between these two stamps, each having a "wood" and "stone" background.
This small diatonic accordion appeared in 1836 in the canton of Schwyz, one of the three founding cantons of the country.

On this letter was also applied the special postmark issued by the Swiss Post at the occasion of the last Autumn Philatelic Exhibition ("Salon Philatélique d'Automne"), held in Paris from 6 to 9 November 2014.
This cachet is a wink to the issue, on September 4, 2014, of the two stamps devoted to Garfield, this lazy and whimsical cat, born in the United States in 1978 at the hands of pencils of cartoonist Jim Davis.
It is that "Garfield" stamp set which was used on the special philatelic souvenir above issued by the Swiss Post during this 68th stamp exhibition in Paris.

Folk legends from Malaysia

A few weeks after the Post of neighbour Singapore, the Malaysian Post has issued, on October 27, 2014, a series of six stamps devoted to the same theme, the folk stories and legends ("Cerita legenda Melayu").
It is that complete set, consisting of 3 pairs of stamps (60 sen each), designed by Hazel Design Sdn Bhd, which appears on the first day cover below, with FDC cancellations from Ipoh (State of Perak). Thank you very much Khor :-)
To note, this does not happen only in France, these double cancellations with some unreadable hand postmarks applied the same day...
Hang Tuah is probably the most famous hero in Malaysia, a warrior from the Sultanate of Malacca in the 15th century. He is considered as one of the greatest masters of silat, this traditional martial art of the Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines region.

The story of Hang Tuah is linked to Tun Teja's one, a princess of Pahang, known for her beauty. Hang Tuah was indeed sent to Pahang by the Sultan of Malacca to persuade Tun Teja, already engaged, to become the sultan's wife.
Tun Teja accepted, thinking to become the Hang Tuah's wife, hence her disappointment when she learned the truth.
However, she accepted this marriage and became one of the few female folk heroines in Malaysia, with Tun Kudu or Tun Fatimah, also featured in this series of stamps.
Tun Fatimah was the heroine of a tragic legend since all her family was executed (including her husband) so she could be married to the Sultan of Malacca at the time.
Mahsuri was a young woman living in the 14th century on the island of Langkawi, accused of adultery and stabbed to death after being tied to a tree. According to legend, a white blood flowed from her wounds, symbolizing her innocence.
Merong Mahawangsa, who was maybe a descendant of Alexander the Great, was at the origin of the creation of Langkasuka, one of the first kingdoms of the Malay Peninsula, which later became the Sultanate of Kedah.

3 years of the "Green Letter" in France

On October 1, 2011, the French Post launched a new mail offer called "Green Letter" distributed in 48h and preserving environment by transporting letters by train.
After the issue of a similar booklet ("The Fifth Republic through stamps, from 1959 to 2013") last year, the new booklet, released in preview sale during the last "Salon Philatélique d'Automne", is devoted to the 3rd anniversary of this "Green Letter".
The two gummed parts of this booklet are included on the special cover below with the FDC cancellation from Paris on November 6, 2014. The graphic design and layout of this booklet, as well as the postmark, is due to Stéphanie Ghinéa.

Unfortunately, this cover passed through the mail platform of Wissous (code 38276A), in the Paris region, where an ugly mechanical cancellation was applied...
The pane at the bottom on this letter is composed of the last two "Marianne" stamps with the "Green Letter" permanent rate (currently € 0.61), the "Marianne and Europe" by Beaujard and the "Marianne and youth" by Ciappa & Kawena.
The top pane (12 stamps) is composed of two different stamps (nominal value : € 0.61 each), adapted from the "Ceres" stamp (green 15c) issued in 1850 and the "Semeuse lignée" (15c green-gray) issued in 1903, respectively designed by Jacques-Jean Barre and Oscar Roty and engraved here in intaglio by Elsa Catelin and Claude Jumelet.
These two stamps, referring to the goddess of the harvest and this sower in a field (sowing against the wind !) have been chosen to tie in the theme of the green letter and the preservation of nature.

Here is above the cover of this gummed booklet with the detail of the stamps included on the left part.

Jean-Claude (thank you very much !) also sent me the first day cover above franked with a half of one of the two panes of that same booklet.

The 4 different stamps of this booklet have also been declined in the souvenir sheet used on this other first day cover of November 6, 2014 above.
About the adapted "Ceres" stamp, the word "France" replaces "Repub Franc", "La Poste 2014" replaces "Postes" and "€ 0.61" replaces "15c".
Regarding the adapted "Semeuse" stamp, the year "2014" is curiously missing and it includes the mention "RF" (for "République Française") instead of "France" ?
As a reminder, the mention "France" (used several times in the past including in the period 1975-1981) has replaced "RF" on French stamps from 2005...

As mentioned in my post yesterday, a second "LISA" ATM stamp was issued during this "Salon Philatélique d'Automne 2014". This LISA is also dedicated to the third anniversary of this Green Letter.
It is a "LISA 1 non-thermic paper" version ("Green Letter" postal rate - € 0.61) of this ATM stamp (designed by Stéphanie Ghinéa) that was used on the nice cover above sent on November 7, 2014 from this Parisian stamp exhibition. Thank you very much Jean-Claude :-)
To note the use of one of the special postmarks issued at this stamp exhibition, referring to the general mobilization of 1914 and the departure of French soldiers to the Eastern front, from the "Gare de l'Est" train station in Paris.
This cancellation is based on the monumental painting by the American artist Albert Herter (1871-1950), entitled "The Departure of "Poilus", August 1914," suspended in this "Gare de l'Est". This work was a gift of this artist in 1926 to the "victorious France"...

A special "Slovakia" French ATM stamp

Merci beaucoup Jean-Claude :-)
Slovakia (its postal administration in particular) was the country's guest of honor of the last Autumn Philatelic Exhibition ("Salon Philatélique d'Automne") held from 6 to 9 November 2014 in Paris.
On this occasion, La Poste has released two new "LISA" ATM stamps (two different printing modes ("LISA 2" thermic paper and "LISA 1" non-thermic paper) for each)) including one dedicated to the Slovak capital, Bratislava.
It is a "LISA 1 non-thermic paper" version ("Green Letter" postal rate - € 0.61) of this ATM stamp that was used on the nice cover below sent on November 7, 2014 from this Parisian exhibition. Thank you very much Jean-Claude :-)

To note the special postmark depicting the facade of the Grassalkovich Palace (late Baroque style), the official residence of the president of the republic.
The right part of this LISA shows a famous panorama of Bratislava, with the Danube river in the foreground, the castle (the symbol of the city with its four side towers) and the bell tower of St. Martin's gothic cathedral (14th and 15th century ).
The left side depicts the entrance gate of the Church of St. Elisabeth, known as the "Blue Church", built in the early 20th century in a Art Nouveau style (szecesszió style, close to Viennese Secessionist style).
This building was named after its facade covered with blue mosaics and tiles.

Tribute to Esteve Albert in Andorra

As part of last "Salon Philatélique d'Automne" in Paris, the French post office in Andorra issued, on November 8, 2014, a new stamp dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of Esteve Albert (1914-1995).
Esteve Albert was an Andorran poet, historian, playwright and cultural promoter of Spanish origin, defender of the Catalan language and autonomy.
He has indeed played a role early in various nationalist organizations ("Nosaltres Sols!" or "Estat Català") and participated at the age of only 20 to the events of October 6, 1934, an insurrectional movement of the Catalan autonomous government that led to the creation of a Catalan State (led by Lluís Companys) in a Spanish federal republic.

Although this movement was doomed to failure, Esteve Albert then worked with Lluís Companys during the Spanish Civil War and continued his activism in the Front Nacional de Catalunya.
He arrived in Andorra in 1956 and devoted his life to the promotion of popular theater shows such as Pessebre Vivent d'Engordany, Retaule de Sant Armengol or Bandera de Catalunya.
Among his most famous works, the historical-patriotic essay "Missió i destí de Catalunya i Occitània".
In 1990, he received the Creu de Sant Jordi of the Generalitat of Catalonia.
It is that stamp (€ 0.66, print run : 60,000), designed by Jordi Casamajor and engraved by Elsa Catelin, which is on the first day cover above.
The year 2014 was declared Year Esteve Albert in the Principality of Andorra.

November 17th commemorations in Czech Rep.

That same day of November 17th, the International Day of students, corresponds in Czech Republic to two important historical events (separated by a half century) : the closure of universities by Adolf Hitler in 1939 and the beginning of the Velvet Revolution in 1989.
Since 2000, a public holiday was established to commemorate these two events in Czech Republic.
Yesterday, the Czechs thus celebrated throughout the country both the 75th anniversary of November 17, 1939 and the 25th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution.
As it was the case in 2009, the Czech Post has issued, on November 5, 2014, a special stamp (13 CZK) devoted to these two historic events.

It is that stamp, designed by Jan Kavan, that appears in two copies on the official FDC from Prague above. Thank you very much Bret :-)
That stamp, including the mention "We do not forget" ("nezapomínáme"), includes the three Czech national colors as well as the coat of arms of the country (Lion of Bohemia).
Jan Kavan also designed the FDC postmark (barbed wire) of November 5, 2014 as well as the other one (slightly larger), applied to the stamp on the left above, available at the Post Office N° 1 of Prague, on November 5 and from November 14 to 18, 2014.

This November 17th, National Day and "Day of Struggle for Freedom and Democracy" therefore commemorates this Velvet Revolution of 1989, which marked the end of communist rule in the former Czechoslovakia.
November 17, 1939 refers to the events that happened in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, while under the influence of Nazi Germany. The outbreak was the student demonstration held in Prague following the funeral of Jan Opletal, killed by the Nazis, which led to demonstrations against the occupation. Adolf Hitler then ordered the closure of all Czech universities precisely on November 17th...

Bret was kind enough to send me the First Day sheet higher up as well as the numbered commemorative sheet above, with the second cancellation designed by Jan Kavan.

EUROPA 2014 stamp set from Luxembourg

To design its EUROPA series (2 stamps) issued on May 8, 2014, the Post of Luxembourg (POST Philately) appealed to the Luxembourg graphic artist Pit Weyer (born in 1940), known in the country and abroad for his colorful and expressive works.
After researching, Pit Weyer did not find any typical Luxembourg musical instrument to illustrate the theme of the "national musical instruments" this year...
For this reason, he has chosen to "depict music in general, but with reference to Luxembourg culture".
The € 0.60 stamp thus features a folk group in a small village of Luxembourg while the other stamp (€ 0.85), more colorful, shows a group of musicians (dressed in ancien peasant costumes) playing the "Hämmelsmarsch" on traditional instruments.

The "Hämmelsmarsch" ("Sheep March") is a Luxembourg tradition dating from the 17th century in the capital, Luxembourg. It refers to a procession of marching bands as well as the melody played, which was actually the Luxembourg national anthem until 1859.
It is that EUROPA 2014 stamp set that was used on the letter above posted on November 11, 2014 in the city of Luxembourg.
Finally, to note the special cancellation on the bottom left, issued by the Luxembourg Post during the last "Salon Philatélique d'Automne" in Paris, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of the French actor Louis de Funès (1914-1983).
The Czech Post had also put into circulation a special postmark devoted to Louis de Funès, on the occasion of the international collectors fair "SBERATEL" held in Prague from 4 to September 6, 2014.
