International Year of Crystallography in Slovenia

Under the auspices of UNESCO and the International Union of Crystallography, 2014 was declared the International Year of Crystallography by the United Nations.
This year was chosen because it coincides with the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Prize in Physics awarded to Max von Laue (1879-1960) for his work on the X-ray diffraction by crystals (allowing the most accurate analysis of atomic and molecular structures).
The main objective of this International Year of Crystallography is particularly to increase public awareness of the importance of crystallography and its impact on technological and medical developments.
Several postal administrations have issued stamps dedicated to this year of crystallography : India, Israel, Poland, Switzerland, Portugal, Slovakia, Liechtenstein or Moldova (personalized stamps).

The two postal administrations of Belgium and Slovenia chose to issue a joint souvenir sheet (2 stamps) about this topic, respectively issued on June 10, 2014 (preview sale on June 7, 2014) and May 30, 2014.
It is the project of the Belgian graphic designer Clotilde Olyff (in collaboration with Professor Luc Van Meervelt, member of the Belgian National Committee for Crystallography) that was chosen for this joint issue, the Slovenian version being used on the letter above sent on November 7, 2014 from Ljubljana. Thank you very much Petra :-)
This souvenir sheet illustrates snow crystals and the principle of diffraction, the two stamps showing in detail the arrangement of water molecules in two variants of an ice crystal.
To note that the Slovenian Post, however, has not completely taken over the Belgian concept (nor its high nominal value of € 7.74 !) since the Slovenian sheet was printed (by Joh. Enschedé Security Print) on normal gummed paper while the two Belgian stamps were printed on a semi-transparent self-adhesive base (a first in Belgium).
