Graphic expressions of the Wajapi in Brazil

Since 2008, the oral and graphic expressions of the Wajapi, an indigenous group living in northern Brazil, in the state of Amapá, are part of the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
For centuries, this community (nearly 580 people) living in forty small villages, is using vegetable dyes to adorn their bodies and objects with geometric motifs.
Brazil Post wanted us to discover this unique indigenous art through the issue, on November 3, 2014, of a special stamp (permanent rate - commercial letter first level).

A big thank you Marcelo for this interesting FDC above regarding that stamp (in 2 copies here), sent on January 26, 2015 from Sao Paulo :-)
To note the two FDC cancellations from Macapá, the capital of the state of Amapá here. The preview sale of that stamp also took place in Brasilia.
That stamp, printed in 600,000 copies, reproduces these characteristics Wajapi geometric elements, from a work made by Katirina Wajãpi.
The motifs of this graphic art, called kusiwa, often refer to the creation of humankind and come alive through a rich corpus of myths about the appearance of man.
This art practice is however in danger of disappearing, partly due to the disinterest on the part of the younger generation...
