After 35 years of Japanese occupation, the Korean peninsula is liberated in August 1945 following the surrender of the Empire of Japan...
The Korean peninsula was then divided into two zones of occupation administered respectively by the United States in the south and the USSR in the north.
During this occupation, a resistance movement at several levels (cultural, political, military) was set up, embodied in particular by the Resistant and nationalist politician Kim Gu (1876-1949), also known as Baekbeom.
Engaged early against this Japanese occupation, he participated in particular in the uprising of March 1, 1919, before exiling himself to China and participating in the Korean provisional government established in Shanghai.
Kim Gu was president of this Korean Provisional Government in exile on several occasions and established the Korean Liberation Army during the second World War.

Rejecting the division of Korea after the liberation in 1945, he then campaigned for the reunification of the peninsula, still remaining today one of the few Korean nationalists respected both in South Korea and North Korea.
On August 4, 2015, Korea Post has released two new self-adhesive stamps devoted to this 70th anniversary of the Korean Liberation, including one showing a portrait of Kim Gu (from a photograph taken during the liberation in August 1945).
These two stamps were issued in a same sheet composed of 12 stamps (6 of each) as well as in a souvenir sheet (2 stamps).
It is the right part of that sheet (including 4 stamps) which was used on the special cover above with postmarks from Nambusan dated August 18, 2015. Thank you very much Ji-Ho :-)
On that stamp, Kim Gu is featured in the center of the national flag (Taegeukgi) which was signed in 1945 by 70 members of the Korean Liberation Army.
The other stamp, including the logo of this 70th anniversary, symbolizes the period following this liberation in South Korea, with the slogan "Great Journey Stepping Forward", referring to the economic development and democracy but also to the aspirations for reunification of the Korean peninsula...
