Russia-Mexico joint stamp issue : national monuments

After Azerbaijan and before Laos, it is Mexico that is in the spotlight with this joint issue (2 stamps) with Russia to mark the 125th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The Russian Post has issued these two stamps on October 19, 2015, devoted to national monuments of the two countries, in the same sheet consisting of 8 stamps (4 of each) and a central vignette mentioning this 125th anniversary (in Russian and Spanish).
A big thank you Yuri for this letter below franked with these two stamps (+ the central vignette), sent on November 11, 2015 from St. Petersburg !
To note that the stamps issued by the Mexican Post are slightly different...

This series (design : O. Ivanova, print run : 200,000) is featuring two national monuments of the two countries : the Peter and Paul Fortress in St. Petersburg and the Chapultepec Castle in Mexico City.
The Peter and Paul Fortress, built between 1703 and 1740 during the reign of Peter the Great, is the historic heart of the city of St. Petersburg.
As shown on this stamp (above to the right), this fortress is dominated by the spire of the Peter and Paul Cathedral, built from 1712 to 1733 to become the necropolis of the Russian imperial Romanov family. The dome of the Grand Ducal Burial Vault, opened in 1908, the purpose-built mausoleum of the Grand Dukes and Duchesses of Russia, is shown at right on that stamp.
Chapultepec Castle is a palace built in the 18th century on top of a hill near Mexico City, then the summer residence of the Viceroy of New Spain.
This castle became the official residence of Emperor Maximilian in 1864 and then the residence of Mexican presidents until 1935 and turned into National Museum of History from 1939.

New "LISA" French ATM stamps from the "Salon Philatélique d'Automne 2015"

After Slovakia in 2014, Canada was the guest of honor of the last "Salon Philatélique d'Automne" held from 5 to 8 November 2015 in Paris.
On this occasion, the French Post has put into circulation two new LISA ATM stamps (two different printing modes ("LISA 2" thermic paper and "LISA 1" non-thermic paper) for each), including one devoted to Canada, and Quebec in particular.
It is a version "LISA 1 non thermic paper" (postal rate "Ecopli" - € 0.66) of this LISA that was used in the top right on the cover below sent on November 5, 2015 from this Parisian stamp exhibition.

This ATM stamp (design : Claude Perchat, print run : 20,000 "LISA 1" and 20,000 "LISA 2") depicts on the left a portrait of Jacques Cartier (1491-1557), French navigator and explorer who took over the St. Lawrence Gulf in Gaspé in 1534 on behalf of the king of France, Francis I.
Jacques Cartier, considered as the "discoverer of Canada", is also depicted on the postmark above, with a same portrait inspired by a work by Quebec painter Théophile Hamel, dating from 1844.
The famous Château Frontenac (1892), an hotel located in the city of Quebec, as well as the village of Percé (Gaspésie) located off the "Percé Rock", a rocky island with steep cliffs and a spectacular natural arch, are also shown on this LISA.
To note that this rock (depicted on a Canadian stamp issued in 1999) was made of three arches when Jacques Cartier landed at Gaspé, not far away...

The 2nd LISA issued during this Salon Philatélique d'Automne 2015, is devoted to the 70th anniversary of the liberation of France, through iconic stamps issued in 1945, about which I've already spoken on this blog (through a special booklet and souvenir sheet also issued on this occasion).
This ATM stamp and its associated cancellation are also included on the special cover above, with the signature of its designer, Valérie Besser. Thank you very much André !
On this LISA (print run : 30,000 "LISA 1" and 30,000 "LISA 2") are featured the four stamps "Liberation 4F blue", "Liberation of Alsace and Lorraine 4F red", "Marianne of Dulac 40c blue" and "Marianne of Gandon 4F blue ".

Thank you also André for this second cover above regarding the other LISA (LISA 2 thermic paper - € 0.66), with the signature of Claude Perchat !

70th anniversary of United Nations in Tunisia

70 years to the day after the ratification of the Charter of the United Nations in San Francisco on October 24, 1945, by the five permanent members of the Security Council and the majority of the 51 signatory countries, the Tunisian Post has issued a special stamp dedicated to this 70th anniversary of the United Nations.
This anniversary is thus intended to remind us the efforts of the United Nations in the consecration of the principles and universal values as well as the international laws contained in its Charter to promote peace and security, sustainable development and human rights.

It is that Tunisian stamp (1000 millimes, print run : 500,000, design : Amor Zammouri) that appears on the official FDC above, put into circulation on October 24, 2015. Many thanks Walid for this cover sent from Nabeul on November 12, 2015 !
That stamp, including the national flag (Tunisia is a member of the UN since November 12, 1956), is featuring the official logo of this 70th anniversary, the number "70" (with the United Nations emblem inside the "0") accompanied by the slogan "Strong UN. Better World." in Arabic here.
As a reminder, about twenty postal administrations have also commemorated this 70th anniversary of the United Nations by issuing special stamps : UNPA, Belarus, Malta, Sri Lanka, Morocco, Algeria, Brunei Darussalam, Russia, China, Vatican, Greece, Albania, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Argentina, Poland (postal stationary), Spain, Uruguay, Monaco...

International Year of Soils 2015 in Iceland

The International Year of Soils 2015, officially launched on December 5, 2014 and implemented by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), aims to increase awareness and understanding of the importance of soil for food security and essential ecosystem functions.
Several postal administrations (Moldova, Spain, Slovenia, Kyrgyzstan (KEP), Portugal, Tunisia) have issued stamps this year dedicated to this International Year of Soils.
Like Slovenia, Iceland has also issued, on September 10, 2015, an interesting souvenir sheet consisting of two stamps (domestic rate up to 500g, 255 ISK currently) on this theme.

It is that souvenir sheet (print run : 30,000), designed by graphic designer Örn Smári Gíslason, that was used on the left on the cover above, sent from Reykjavik on November 25, 2015.
To note that this sheet, including the logo of this International Year of Soils ("Alþjóðlegt jarðvegsár" in Icelandic) at the bottom left, was issued as part of the Stamp Day ("Dagur frímerkisins").
Iceland is curiously one of the countries in the world having lost the most ground because of its intensive exploitation...
The other two stamps above to the right (also printed in France by Cartor Security Printing) are part of the "tourist" series (started in 2012), designed by Oscar Bjarnason, issued on February 19, 2015.
The spectacular sites of Gatastakkur (rate up to 50g to Europe, 180 ISK, print run : 500,000) with its strangely shaped rock formations in the Þistilfjörður fjord (north-east of the country) and Eldhraun (rate up to 50g outside Europe, 240 ISK, print run : 100,000) in south-east Iceland, a huge lava field formed after the eruption of Laki volcano in 1784, are featured on these two stamps.

Tribute to a pioneer of maximaphily in Andorra

As part of the last "Salon philatélique d'Automne" held in Paris from November 5 to 8, 2015, the French Post in Andorra has put into circulation, on November 7, 2015, a special stamp (€ 1.25, print run : 50 000) commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Ramon d'Areny-Plandolit (1915-1996), famous Andorran philatelist, maximaphily's precursor and initiator of several specialized philatelic associations in the Principality.
It is that stamp, designed and engraved by Pierre Bara (layout : Stéphanie Ghinea) that appears on the first day cover below, with a cancellation including the portrait and signature of Ramon d'Areny-Plandolit.
To note that a second postmark, different, was also available in Paris, referring to this "Salon Philatélique d'Automne" and depicting one of the two maxicards included on the right on that stamp.

Ramon d'Areny-Plandolit is a descendant of one of the few noble families of the Principality of Andorra, with an important social position in particular due to Guillem d'Areny-Plandolit (1822-1876), a famous political (he was president of the General Council) and economic (metallurgical industry) figure of Andorran history.
Ramon d'Areny-Plandolit, also precursor of photography in the country, was the initiator of the Andorran maximaphily, himself editor of many maxicards, such as the two ones on that stamp, referring to the chapel dedicated to the patron saint of Andorra, Our Lady of Meritxell, (destroyed by fire in 1972) and to the medieval bridge of Sant Antoni de la Grella.
These two cards, with postmarks from 1933 and 1939 respectively, include stamps (with "Valleys of Andorra" in French mentions) being part of the first definitive series in Andorra (issued in 1932 and 1937) on the same themes.

For the first time, the two postal administrations of Switzerland and Åland have issued, on September 3, 2015, a joint set of two stamps devoted to traditional jewellery of the two countries, particularly folk dress jewellery in silver.
In my opinion, this joint issue is one of the most successful of 2015 and I'm very happy to share it with you through the two covers below, respectively sent from Lausanne on November 9, 2015 and from Mariehamn (capital of the Åland archipelago) on November 19, 2015 !
To note on the letter from Switzerland below, the special "Marsupilami" cachet at the bottom left, put into circulation by the Swiss Post during the last "Salon Philatélique d'Automne" in Paris.

Cartor Security Printing (France) printed in offset (4-colour and 5-colour + embossing) this series of two stamps for both Switzerland and Åland, that is why stamps, designed by Cecilia Mattsson, are almost identical.
The two Swiss stamps (1 CHF and 1.40 CHF) were issued each in sheet of 15 stamps (3 rows of 5 stamps) while the two Åland stamps ("Europa" = € 1.20 and € 2.00, print run : 180 000 each) were issued in sheet of 30 stamps (6 rows of 5 stamps) with vignettes in the central margin.
The stamp on the left on these two letters shows a flower-shaped brooch in silver and fine filigree work, worn by women in traditional costume of the Canton of Bern in Switzerland, whose original form dates from 1880.

The other stamp depicts a silver buckle used to attach the usually colorful scarfs, being part of the traditional female costumes worn in Åland from the early 20th century.
These costumes, specific to each of the 16 municipalities of the archipelago, are especially worn during celebrations of the summer solstice.
The scarf buckle reproduced on this stamp was created by the silver goldsmith Viking Sundberg (who lived in the municipality of Finström) based on ancient finds in Åland, some dating back to Viking times.

As it was the case the previous years, French Santa Claus was kind enough to answer favorably to my letter :-)
He once again replied with a postal stationery, issued this year by the French office of Santa Claus (employing 60 persons) operational since November 17, 2015, located in the town of Libourne (Department of Gironde) since 1962.
As usual, a personalized stamp (type "ID Timbre") is preprinted on this envelope, valid for a worldwide shipment up to 20g (currently €1.20).

To note again the absence of a precise date of shipment on this cover but only a red postmark (also pre-printed) with the words "Père Noël" ("Santa Claus"), the year "2015" and "33 Libourne".
Santa Claus is featured on the illustration to the left, offering a teddy bear to one of his elves, the stamp showing another (feminine) elf seeming to do ice skating (?).

Santa is also depicted on the other side of this envelope above, with his sleigh and reindeers, ready for delivering many gifts to children of the world...
To note the reference to the left to a copyright "Erébus 2015", a graphic and design agency founded in 1993, managing the artistic direction of this French Post "Santa Claus" project since 2004. For the first time this year, the name of the author of these illustrations (Julian Nguyen You) is also mentioned !
As it is the case since 2013, the FSC logo ("Forest Stewardship Council") is present to the right, certifying that the paper used here meets sustainable forest management.
In 2014, this French office of Santa Claus answered for free to about 1.2 million letters (from 140 countries) and 123,000 emails, some declining figures compared to previous years...

On May 27, 2015 (National Day of Resistance), by decision of the President of the French Republic, four great figures of the Resistance during WWII were being inducted into the Panthéon, then joining the 71 French personalities being buried there.
Built in the late 18th century by Soufflot, this Parisian monument, originally planned to be a church, now intended to honor the most important figures having marked the history of France in various fields (science, literature, arts, politics...).
These four Heroes of the Resistance, Pierre Brossolette, Geneviève de Gaulle-Antonioz, Germaine Tillion and Jean Zay, have been honored because they symbolize the values of the Republic and the "France combattante" ("Fighting France") Resistance movement by having fought against the German Nazi occupation from the early 1940s.

On November 5, 2015, a special collector (4 stamps) was put into circulation to pay tribute to these four personalities of the Resistance, at the "Carré d'Encre" and at the last "Salon Philatélique d'Automne" in Paris.
The four self-adhesive stamps ("Green Letter 20g", currently € 0.68) of this collector (limited print run : 12 000, sale price : € 4.50) have been used on the first day cover above, with a special postmark featuring the facade of the Panthéon, with this motto ("Aux grands hommes la patrie reconnaissante" ("To the great men, the grateful homeland") inscribed on its pediment.
These four stamps depict portraits specially made by the plastic artist Ernest Pignon-Ernest (born in 1942) when Pierre Brossolette, Geneviève de Gaulle-Antonioz, Germaine Tillion and Jean Zay were inducted into the Panthéon earlier this year.
To note that Ernest Pignon-Ernest has designed in the past 12 commemorative stamps for the French Post (from the series "French writers" in 1993 to Pablo Casals in 2006) and in particular the stamp issued in 2002 for the entry of writer Alexandre Dumas into the Panthéon !

These four stamps were issued in this collector (front above with this great view of the Panthéon at the top, back below).
The back includes a narrative recalling the genesis of the creation of the Resistance movement in France, under the leadership of General de Gaulle and Jean Moulin (buried in the Panthéon), as well as a biography of these four heroes, Pierre Brossolette (1903-1944), Geneviève de Gaulle-Antonioz (1920-2002), Germaine Tillion (1907-2008) and Jean Zay (1904-1944).
Pierre Brossolette committed suicide in 1944 after being arrested and tortured by the Gestapo while Jean Zay, Minister of Education of the Popular Front, was arrested by the Vichy regime and killed by the militia, also in 1944.

Geneviève de Gaulle-Anthonioz and Germaine Tillion shared a common destiny, having joined or participated in the creation of the Resistance "Group of the Museum of Man" ("Réseau du Musée de l'homme" in French) in June 1940, being arrested and deported to Ravensbrück camp in 1943, subsequently becoming two advocates for human rights or being the first two French women decorated the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour (in 1997 and 1999 respectively).
Only four women are now buried in the Panthéon (Marie Curie, Sophie Berthelot (chemist Marcellin Berthelot's wife), Geneviève de Gaulle-Antonioz and Germaine Tillion).
Finally, to note that among these four personalities, three were already honored in the past on French stamps : Pierre Brossolette in 1957, Jean Zay in 1984 and Geneviève de Gaulle-Antonioz in 2003.

70th anniversary of United Nations in Russia

In order to overcome the failures of the League of Nations, US President Roosevelt then wished to implement a hierarchy of states where all signatories would be represented, but with a Security Council composed of fifteen members including five permanent countries with a power of veto : USA, USSR (later replaced by Russia), China, France and UK.
This hierarchy is mentioned in the Charter of the United Nations or "Charter of San Francisco" (adopted by 51 countries 26 June 1945), the treaty that defines the goals and principles of the UN as well as the composition, duties and powers of its executive, deliberative, judicial and administrative bodies.
So this year we commemorate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations (193 member states today), an anniversary celebrated by several postal administrations.

This is the case of Russia with the stamp above (26.50 rubles) used to frank this letter sent on November 11, 2015 from St. Petersburg. Thank you very much Yuri !
To note that Russia is the only permanent member of the Security Council, with China, having issued a stamp about this 70th anniversary of the United Nations...
This self-adhesive stamp (print run : 315,000), issued on September 15, 2015 (when the 70th session of the UN General Assembly opened) in sheet of 9 stamps, depicts the United Nations headquarters in New York, with a series of flags on the foreground, including UN and Russia ones.
To note also the presence of the official logo of this 70th anniversary, the number "70" (with the United Nations emblem inside the "0"), but without its associated slogan "Strong UN. Better World."...
About twenty postal administrations also commemorated this 70th anniversary of UN by issuing special stamps : UNPA, Belarus, Malta, Sri Lanka, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Brunei Darussalam, China, Vatican, Greece, Albania, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Argentina, Poland (postal stationery), Spain, Uruguay, Monaco...

UPAEP 2015 stamp from Spain : "No a la Trata" !

A big thank you Luis for this FDC below, with postmark from Madrid, sent on November 16, 2015, regarding the new stamp UPAEP (Postal Union of the Americas, Spain and Portugal) issued on October 27, 2015 by the Spanish Post (Correos) and whose theme this year is dedicated to the fight against human trafficking !
That stamp (€ 1.00, print run : 220,000), with its slogan "No a la Trata" ("No to Trafficking") mixed with the woman symbol (consisting of a circle with a small cross below it) is reminding us that in Europe, women are the primary target of human trafficking networks through deceit or coercion, mainly from Eastern Europe or Africa...

Trafficking or illegal trade of persons for unlawful purposes is a crime against humanity, having unfortunately become a global phenomenon, a form of 21st century slavery due to the very high number of victims (estimated at over four millions).
In Latin America (UPAEP issues mainly concern these countries), over two million children and adolescents are victims of sexual, commercial or labour abuse.
In the European Union, there could be about 275,000 victims of human trafficking, according to the United Nations, women for most of them.

140th anniversary of the birth of Queen Marie in Romania

On July 15, 2008, the Romanian Post issued a set of two stamps to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the death of Queen Marie of Romania (1875-1938).
One of the two stamps (L 3.00) in this series, issued on the occasion of the Postage Stamp Day in Romania ("Ziua Mărcii Poştale Româneşti"), was used on the pretty special cover below.
Thank you very much Mihnea and Dorin for this letter sent on October 29, 2015 from Bucharest (post office 37), the day of the issuance of a special cancellation dedicated to the 140th anniversary, to the day, of the birth of Queen Marie of Romania.
This illustrated envelope, canceled with this postmark, was specially edited by the Bucharest philatelists' association.

Marie of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, originally a member of the British royal family, married in 1893 Ferdinand of Hohenzollern, Crown Prince of Romania.
Marie became Queen of Romania when Ferdinand I ascended the throne in 1914, although the coronation took place only in 1922, after the 1st World War.
Queen Marie became very popular during this war through her involvement with the Red Cross, some said that, in the facts, she actually ruled Romania, then occupied by German troops...
She was the participant for Romania in 1919 at the Treaty of Versailles, making her dream of unified Romania come true.
Marie died in 1938 while his son Carol II was king. The Kingdom of Romania gave way to the Romanian People's Republic proclaimed by the communists on December 30 1947...

Royal Mail Post & Go Stamps from Paris !

At the last Autumn Philatelic Exhibition ("Salon Philatélique d'Automne") held in Paris from 5 to 8 November 2015, the Royal Mail was present with, among others, two machines (A013 and A014) delivering ATM stamps called "Post & Go Stamps".
The first ATM stamps of this type appeared in 2008 in the UK with a fleet of over 700 machines by early 2015.
The illustrated part of these stamps changes regularly and four different ones were offered to the public in Paris : Union Flag and Queen Elizabeth II profile inspired by the Machin series (machine A013), heraldic lion and common poppy (machine A014).
This poppy is often worn in Commonwealth countries to remember the dead fighters during World War I.

These four different Post & Go stamps are included on the cover above, sent on November 12, 2015 from Manchester.
To note, bottom left, the special cachet of the Royal Mail proposed at this stamp exhibition, featuring the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
If I'm not wrong, these four Post & Go Stamps were delivered by these two machines in Paris with 6 different postal rates, including "Euro 20g - World 10g" here, £ 1.00 currently.
To note that these ATM stamps are customized with the mention "Paris November 2015" on the left and a unique code on the bottom left starting with the letter B, followed by N (for November), FR (for FRance), 15 for 2015, the machine number, the session number, and the pack number.

For over 100 years, a partnership (decree of the President of the Republic dating from 1914) between the French Post and the Red Cross authorizes the issue of stamps including surcharges for the benefit of the Red Cross (the 1st stamp issued with a 5c surcharge was the "Semeuse camée 10c").
The French Red Cross is now composed of 54 000 volunteers and 14,000 employees who help people in need in the areas of health and social action.
The French Post has kept the format (a strip of five stamps and a separable illustrated top margin) used the previous years for the special "Red Cross" souvenir sheet issued on November 7, 2015.

After the young illustrator Pénélope Bagieu in 2012, the Iranian-born French cartoonist, painter and film director Marjane Satrapi in 2013, the French comic writer, animator and film director Sylvain Chomet in 2014, it is this time the French fashion, cosmetics and accessories designer agnès b. (born in 1941) who designed this new souvenir sheet (print run : 400,000) issued in preview sale during the last "Salon Philatélique d'Automne" in Paris as well as at the "Carré d'Encre".
It is that sheet that was used on the first day cover above with its usual red postmark applied only for the French Red Cross charity stamps (€ 2.00 donated to the association when you're buying this sheet).
Through these five stamps (€ 0.68), agnès b. (Agnès Troublé), also philanthropist and filmmaker, has "drawn a set of strong and impactful symbols to enhance the work of the volunteers and employees of the French Red Cross", with this sentence included in the top margin (in French) : "The Cross Red is made with love and courage"...
You like or do not like the deliberately simple style of this souvenir sheet, with no frills, going straight to the message, which is found in the other activities of agnès b.

Sepac 2015, fauna and landscape stamps on cover from Iceland

After the animals in 2013 or flowers in 2014, the European postal administrations, members of the association Sepac (Small European Postal Administration Cooperation) have issued stamps this year devoted to the theme of culture in general.
As a reminder, there are currently 14 member states or territories in this postal association and the first series of Sepac stamps date from 2007, San Marino and Vatican City having never participated in these joint issues, characterized by the presence of the Sepac logo on the stamps...
The Sepac stamp issued by Iceland this year (on February 19, 2015) was used on the top left on this nice letter below sent on November 10, 2015 from Reykjavik. Thank you very much Emma :-)
That stamp (50g to Europe, ISK 180) is dedicated to the music festival Iceland Airwaves, held annually since 1999 in Reykjavik, for 5 days in October/November, a symbol of the vitality of the Icelandic music scene (Björk, GusGus or Sígur rós).

The "Northern lights" stamp in the upper right (50g to Europe, ISK 180) is part of a souvenir sheet (4 self-adhesive stamps) issued on May 2, 2013 on the occasion of the philatelic exhibition NORDIA organized this year in Iceland.
A thick-billed murre (Uria lomvia) is featured on the ISK 110 stamp issued on November 5, 2009 in a series of two stamps devoted to bird species. This bird, nesting on the cliffs, is mainly found in Iceland (600,000 couples) in Látrabjarg and Hornbjarg in the Westfjords.
The ISK 90 stamp, issued on May 6, 2010, is part of a series devoted to garden parks, Jónsgarður here, the oldest public park in the town of Ísafjörður (northwest peninsula of the country) opened in 1922.
The last stamp (80 ISK) is part of a set of two stamps, issued on January 29, 2009, having spiders and insects for theme (a series started in 2004), a moth fly (Psychodidae) here, two species having been registered in Iceland.

Historical post vehicles (2013 and 2015) in Austria

Merci beaucoup Lars :-)
On September 12, 2013, the Austrian Post started a new series devoted to historical post vehicles ("Historische Postfahrzeuge"), issued as a souvenir sheet.
To note that a souvenir sheet of the same type had however been issued in 2008, a joint issue with the Czech Post.
It is that souvenir sheet issued in 2013 (€ 0.70, print run : 265,000), designed by Gabriele Milewski, which was used to frank the letter below, sent on November 5, 2015 from the small town of Sankt Jakob im Rosental (south of the country, near the Slovenian border). Thank you very much Lars :-)

This souvenir sheet reproduces a painting dating from the first half of the 19th century (around 1830) entitled "holiday journey by express post", signed at the bottom right by K. Schnorpfeil.
The stamp shows a postal stagecoach also used for passenger transport (capacity of four persons), powered by a team of four horses, with a coachman playing horn.
Travels on board this type of stagecoach were popular in the early 19th century in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, before declining with the arrival of the railway from 1837.
Automotive transport that was developed in the early 20th century put a definitive end to this type of (non-polluting) transport.
Lars used a second definitive self-adhesive stamp to the left (€ 0.10), issued on March 1, 2015, devoted to the Hill Church (Bergkirche) built in the early 18th century on Calvary Hill (Kalvarienberg) in Eisenstadt (eastern Austria), then seat of the noble Esterházy family.
This church is also called "Haydn Church" as the body of the famous Austrian composer Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) was transported there in 1820.

Lars also sent me the same day the cover above, franked this time with the second souvenir sheet of this "historical post vehicles" series, issued on August 27, 2015.
This souvenir sheet (€ 1.00, print run : 170,000), designed by Regina Simon, probably also inspired by a painting (?), shows a postal cariole carriage (early 19th century), ie a one or two passengers' carriage (two- or four-wheeled vehicle, open or covered), drawn by a single horse.

FDC with new UNESCO stamp set : wildebeest and Sagrada Familia

On November 6, 2015, two new UNESCO stamps have been issued (in preview sale) during the 69th "Salon Philatélique d'Automne" in Paris. As it was the case in 2013 and 2014, it seems that the first day of issue of this series did not take place at the Paris UNESCO's headquarters...
As a reminder, the French Post is regularly issuing since 1960, some official stamps for UNESCO, that can only be used on mail sent from the headquarters of this United Nations agency devoted to science, culture and education.
This new series (design : Jean-Paul Véret-Lemarinier, print run : 400,000 for each stamp) appears on the first day cover below.
To note the FDC cancellations (applied with a blue ink as usual) featuring the famous emblem of UNESCO, also included on each stamp, as well as the UNESCO 70th anniversary's logo.

After the Siberian tiger in 2006, Gorilla in 2008, Polar bear in 2009, Alpaca in 2010, Bactrian camel in 2011, African elephant in 2012, Red-crowned Cranes in 2013 and Hyacinth macaw in 2014, UNESCO has chosen to feature a Common wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus) on this new stamp above to the right (€ 0.95).
This large antelope, living in herds on the plains of southern Africa, Kenya and Tanzania, is not particularly threatened with a number of individuals estimated at 1.55 million.
The other stamp (€ 1.20) is dedicated to the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, one of the main works of the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926).
With its bold architecture, one of the finest examples of Catalan modernism, this religious building, whose construction began in 1882, should be completed in 2026.
Inscribed by UNESCO on the World Heritage list in 2005 with six other works by Gaudí in Barcelona, this basilica is the most visited monument in Spain.

Monumental arches and gates (III) in Spain

Merci beaucoup Josep :-)
Les différentes portes monumentales à l'honneur ici donnent accès à plusieurs villes espagnoles entourées de murailles.
As it was the case in 2013 and 2014, the Spanish Post devoted its first issue of 2015 (on January 2 exactly), a booklet of 8 stamps, to monumental arches and gates located in different cities of the country.
This is actually a booklet of 8 self-adhesive stamps (domestic Permanent rate 'A' - currently € 0.42), 4 different stamps in 2 copies each (in 2013 and 2014, 8 different stamps were issued).
These four stamps were used to frank the letter below sent on October 9, 2015 from Barcelona. Thank you very much Josep :-)
The different monumental gates in the spotlight here provide access to several Spanish cities surrounded by walls.

The Puerta de la Luna, in Cordoba (Andalusia), is located in the western part of the walled enclosure, with a double entrance giving access to the Jewish quarter.
Cordoba, whose historic center is a World Heritage Site since 1994, conserves some ancient walls (dating from Roman, Muslim or Christian times).
The Puerta de la Cadena, in Brihuega (Province of Guadalajara), is one of the five gates which once allowed access to the city. The top of the arch is accompanied in particular with a plaque commemorating the attack on Brihuega by the troops of Felipe V in 1710, during the War of Spanish Succession.
The Puerta de Santa María, in Hondarribia-Fuenterrabía (Province of Gipuzkoa), was built in the 16th century following a fire that destroyed the old medieval city. This gate is topped by an arch bearing the coat of arms of the city (dating from 1694) and a sculpture of the Virgin of Guadalupe, patron saint of the city.
The Puerta de Sant Pere, in Peñíscola (Province of Castellon), is one of the three gates that gave access to the fortified parts of this coastal city. It was built in the 15th century under the orders of "Papa Luna" (1328-1423), Pope of Avignon under the name of Benedict XIII (his carved coat of arms is included on this gate).

"Marianne of the Liberation" 70th anniversary - new French booklet

As part of the last "Salon Philatélique d'Automne" held in Paris from November 5 to 8, 2015, the French Post has commemorated the 70th anniversary of the end of the 2nd World War and of the liberation of France by putting into circulation on November 5, 2015, a booklet (with two sheets) and a souvenir sheet, each composed of 14 stamps, red and blue, respectively.
This booklet and souvenir sheet are composed of stamps issued in 1945, in particular the two "Marianne" definitive stamps ("Marianne of Dulac" and "Marianne of Gandon") as well as the stamp dedicated to the liberation of Alsace and Lorraine.

One of the two sheets of this booklet (print run : 150,000) was used on the cover above with special cancellation (design : Valérie Besser) from Paris dated November 5, 2015.
This postmark mixes French flags and the three stamps mentioned above, issued in 1945, as well as a fourth stamp, entitled "Liberation", issued the same year.
The two stamps above (€ 0.76 each) are inspired by the "Marianne of Dulac" (1944-1945, 20 values in total), printed at the time in England by Thomas de la Rue (drawing by Edmond Dulac, a French artist naturalized English in 1912, engraving : Leonard Vincent Phillips), engraved by Elsa Catelin for this new version, and the "Marianne of Gandon" (1945-1954, 57 values in total), designed and engraved by Pierre Gandon (except the values printed in typography from 1946, then engraved by Henri Cortot).
To note that the punch of the "Marianne of Dulac" stamp is still being kept in England.

The second part of this booklet consists of 12 stamps (6 pairs of "Marianne of Gandon" and "Marianne of Dulac" stamps), however different from those included in the first sheet.
It is one of these pairs that appears on the letter above.
These two gummed stamps (€ 0.76 each), engraved by Jacky Larrivière, are inspired by the self-adhesive stamps of the two booklets issued respectively in 2005 ("Marianne of Dulac") and 2006 ("Marianne of Gandon").
Compared to the original stamps, these stamps include for example the mention "France" instead of "RF" or "La Poste" instead of "Postes", the "Marianne of Dulac" having lost her "Cross of Lorraine" in the top right corner...
These definitive stamps are the 2nd and 3rd stamps issued in France with a portrait of Marianne, after the "Marianne of Fernez" or "Marianne of Algiers" (1944-1945).

Here is above the cover of this gummed booklet with the detail of the stamps included on the left part.

In that same series, the souvenir sheet issued above (print run : 30,000), consisting of two "liberation of Alsace and Lorraine" stamps (value : € 4), six "Marianne of Dulac" stamps (value : € 1) and six "Marianne of Gandon" stamps (value : € 1).
This souvenir sheet (value : € 20) is sold with an explanatory text (above to the right) written (only in French) by Bertrand Sinais, member of the French Academy of Philately.
