Railways in the state of Sabah, Malaysia

For its last stamp issue of 2015, the Malaysian Post has chosen the theme of the railways and in particular the line operating between the stations of Tanjung Aru (near the capital, Kota Kinabalu) and Tenom in the state of Sabah, the only rail transport system (freight and passenger) on the island of Borneo.
The construction of this line began in 1896 to transport tobacco from inland to the coast to facilitate export.
Completed in 1903 and consisting of 17 train stations, this line measured 193 km long and was originally traveled by trains powered by Vulcan type steam locomotives, imported from Britain.

On December 28, 2015, a souvenir sheet (5 RM) and three stamps (60, 70 and 80 sen) have been issued (printed in France by Cartor Security Printing), illustrating different types of trains used on this line over time, currently managed by the Sabah State Railway Department.
A big thank you Khor for these two official FDC regarding this series, with postmarks from Ipoh (state of Perak) !
The stamp of the souvenir sheet above (to note its original perforation) depicst a historic steam locomotive Vulcan 15 dating from 1956, on the railway bridge in Papar.
Since 2000, this type of train is used between the stations of Tanjung Aru and Papar for the "North Borneo Railway Historical Tour", a circuit set up to develop tourism in this region.

The three stamps of this series above are featuring other types of locomotives used on this railway line, today operating only between Tenom and Tanjung Aru (134 km, 14 stations) : Hitachi Diesel-hydraulic locomotive (60 sen), railbus (70 sen) with the iron bridge over Padas river in Beaufort in the background, and diesel multiple unit (80 sen) with the Sabah State mosque in Kota Kinabalu built between 1970 and 1974 in the background to the left.
Finally, to note that this railway line was almost completely destroyed during the 2nd World War and was partially rebuilt and again operational from 1963.
