Centennial Airshow on the base 110 in Creil, France - Special stamp and postmark

A big thank you Axel for this interesting cover sent on the occasion of the Centennial Airshow ("Meeting du Centenaire") organized on May 29, 2016 on the French air force base 110 of Creil (Oise) !
This aviation festival, referring to the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Verdun, had a particular resonance for this base of the French Air Force (opened in 1954) since its aviation platform will close on August 31, 2016...
This base 110 now houses three transport squadrons with CASA CN-235M-200 aircrafts and even an Airbus A310 which participated for the first time at an air show.

The French air force has about thirty CASA CN-235M-200, a tactical transport turboprop aircraft (sometimes nicknamed "transalito" for its Spanish origin), based in Creil and in the French Overseas departments and territories.
It is that aircraft which is featured on the special cancellation from Creil above including the words "1916 Meeting du Centenaire 2016" while the personalized stamp (type "MonTimbraMoi", tariff "Green Letter 20g") reproduces the poster of this Airshow.
This poster shows different aircrafts (from different periods) stationed on this air base (Mirage, Rafale, Alphajet, Casa...).
This postmark was proposed by a temporary post office installed on this base 110, in collaboration with the local stamp association ("groupement philatélique Creillois"). A collector of 4 stamps featuring iconic aircraft of this air base, was also offered to the public.

EUROPA 2016 (Think Green!) stamp set on cover from Liechtenstein

A new EUROPA 2016 cover in my collection, this time sent from the Principality of Liechtenstein, posted in Vaduz on May 31, 2016. Thank you very much Vural !
Such as many other European postal administrations, the Post of Liechtenstein decided to issue two EUROPA stamps this year (on March 7, 2016), including one reproducing the joint design chosen by PostEurop to celebrate this year the 60th anniversary of the issue of the first EUROPA stamps, devoted to the theme of "Ecology in Europe" through the slogan "Think Green".
As a reminder, it is the project of the Cyprus Post (author : Doxia Sergidou) which was chosen for this joint stamp, referring to the role and responsibility of man for a greener future.

That stamp "From Gray to Green" (CHF 1.50), above to the left, was printed in sheet of 20 self-adhesive stamps by Gutenberg AG in Schaan, the largest municipality of Liechtenstein by population.
To design the 2nd stamp above to the right (CHF 1.50), Philatelie Liechtenstein organized its own competition among trainee graphic artists and polygraphers living in Liechtenstein.
Aurora Corrado (from Balzers), with her design "Rethinking Green", was chosen, featuring the planet Earth divided into two parts, a first one with high and industrial buildings in unfriendly colours and the other half showing a green landscape with mountains and a rainbow.
To note that this stamp, which can be affixed upside down, was printed in panes of 16 gummed stamps (8 pairs tête-bêche) with illustrated margins by Cartor Security Printing, France.

150th anniversary of the comic opera "The Bartered Bride" in Czech Republic

On May 18, 2016, the Czech Post has released a beautiful stamp (domestic rate up to 50g, 16 CZK) dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the first performance of the comic opera "The Bartered Bride", work by Czech composer Bedřich Smetana (1824-1884).
Smetana was the first composer to use specifically Czech elements in his music, especially with operas based on Czech themes or compositions inspired by Czech folk rhythms and melodies.
This is the case of this comic opera "The Bartered Bride" ("Prodaná nevěsta" in Czech), composed between 1863 and 1866 and premiered at the Provisional Theatre in Prague on May 30, 1866 (two-act format with spoken dialogue).

This opera was not an immediate success and was revised and extended (three acts with sung recitatives) in 1870 to become a worldwide success.
This work, having a Czech village as framework, tells how, after a late surprise revelation, true love prevails over the combined efforts of ambitious parents and a marriage broker...
I really like that stamp, designed by Vladimír Suchánek, present on this FDC (print run : 3,500) from Prague above (thank you very much Bret !) featuring this bride in traditional clothes (embroidery pattern being depicted on the cancellation).
The engraving on the left on this envelope (author : Bohumil Šneider) evokes an invitation for this opera's first performance in 1866.

Bret completed his postage with another nice stamp (11 CZK) stuck on the other side of this FDC above.
That stamp (design : Emanuel Ranný, engraving : Václav Fajt), issued on May 26, 1999, is featuring the covered wooden bridge, built in 1718 on the Svratka river, in the middle of the village of Černvír (south Moravia).
As usual, Bret was also kind enough to send me the first day sheet below, regarding that same stamp.

It's worth noting that a souvenir sheet (unperforated), designed in a very similar style, was issued by the Czechoslovak Post in 1966 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of that same comic opera.

EUROPA 2016 stamp on cover from Slovakia, with 2015 postmark !

Thank you very much Miloš for this very nice letter sent on June 3, 2016 (to note the erroneous mention of the year, 2015 instead of 2016, on the postmark to the right...) from the Slovak capital, Bratislava, franked with the unique EUROPA stamp (€ 0.90, print run : 200,000) issued on May 5, 2016 !
As you know now, that stamp was designed from the joint drawing (author : Doxia Sergidou / Cyprus Post) chosen by PostEurop to celebrate this year the 60th anniversary of the issue of the first CEPT-EUROPA stamps (in 1956).
That stamp's theme is devoted to Ecology in Europe through the slogan "Think Green!" ("Mysli zeleno!" in Slovak), referring to the role and responsibility of man for a greener future.

To note that this stamp was issued in sheet of 8 gummed stamps (as it's the case for the stamp above) as well as in a booklet (print run : 15,000) composed of six self-adhesive stamps.
The other stamp (€ 0.10) is part of the nice definitive series (first Slovak series denominated in Euros) issued on January 2, 2009, dedicated to Romanesque art, to the church of Saint John the Baptist of Pominovce (12th century) here.
The EUROPA stamp is canceled with an interesting postmark put into circulation in Bratislava 5 on the occasion of the 13th edition of the "Bratislava Collectors Days" ("Bratislavské zberateľské dni") held on 3 and 4 June 2016.
This cancellation of June 3rd represents the front of the general post office in Bratislava (built between 1909 and 1912) while the other one issued on June 4th shows the building of the Slovak National Museum.
This annual exhibition attracts many collectors of stamps and associated products but also postcards, medals, minerals, coins, banknotes or small antiques.

Minerals and "Mother Teresa" joint issue on cover from Kosovo

I already received a letter from Albania franked with that stamp, issued on August 26, 2010, a joint issue between the three postal administrations of Albania, Kosovo and Macedonia, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Mother Teresa (1910-1997).
That same stamp, issued this time by the Post of Kosovo, was used to the right on this letter sent on May 28, 2016 from the city of Gjakovë (Đakovica in Serbian), located in the southwest of the country, near the Albanian border. Thank you very much Sabri !
That stamp (€ 1.00), designed by Hyrije Ademi, shows a portrait of Mother Teresa in her famous sari with blue stripes of the Missionaries of Charity, the Catholic religious order she founded in 1950 in Calcutta.

The 2nd stamp (€ 1.00) above is part of a series of two stamps (design : Sh. Halimi), issued on November 20, 2014, devoted to different minerals of the country, in particular extracted from the Trepča mining complex located near Mitrovica (northern Kosovo).
That stamp shows more precisely a mineral made of sphalerite, marmatite and pyrrothite, being part of the collections of the Museum of crystal Trepča, founded in 1964, where more than 1500 minerals (all discovered in this region) are exhibited.
To note that this mining complex (more than 20,000 workers in the early 20th century, one of the largest companies in the former Yugoslavia) sums up the tensions between Kosovo and Serbia, the two countries claiming ownership on this strategic industrial site of Trepča...

2016 Rotary International Convention - FDC from South Korea

For the 2nd time after 1989, South Korea hosted, from 28 May to 1 June 2016, the Convention (107th edition) of the Rotary International, considered as the world's oldest non-affiliated service organization (established in 1905 in Chicago by Paul P. Harris).
Composed of more than 35,000 clubs worldwide (1.2 million members), Rotary International presents itself as a "non-political and open organization that encourages high ethical and professional and civic work to advance understanding and peace in the world", through its official motto "Service Above Self ".

Korea Post has released on May 2, 2016, a stamp (300 won, print run : 700,000, design : Park Eunkyung) devoted to this Convention held at the Korea International Exhibition Center (KINTEX) located in Goyang, a northern suburb of Seoul.
That stamp was printed (by Cartor) in a sheet consisting of 20 stamps (5 strips of 4 stamps), wit an illustrated top margin, including the logo of this Convention as well as the Rotary International's emblem (gear wheel with 24 teeth, dating from 1924) also present on the stamp.
A big thank you Ji-Ho for this nice FDC sent from Busan, franked with the upper strip of the sheet (4 stamps) !
The logo of this Convention was inspired by the main courtroom (Geunjeongjeon) of the Gyeongbokgung royal palace (Joseon dynasty) located in northern Seoul.

Booklet "Football" in France : 10 favorite gestures of web users in stamps and 3D !

On the occasion of the last Philatelic Exhibition "Paris-Philex" (but also at the "Carré d'Encre"), Phil@poste has put in preview sale on May 19, 2016 (general sale on May 30, 2016), a special booklet with 10 self-adhesive stamps ("Green Letter" - € 0.70) devoted to the theme of football through 10 typical technical gestures of that sport.
The issue of this booklet of course occured to celebrate the European Football Championship currently held in France.
Three stamps of this booklet (print run : 3.5 million) were used on the two First Day Covers from Paris below (thank you very much Jean-Claude !), with a cancellation, designed by the "Huitième Jour" agency from the illustration of one of the stamps (bicycle kick).

This cancellation includes the words "Favorite football gestures" in French, reminding that the 10 gestures illustrated in this booklet were selected from among 15 technical gestures during an internet vote (over 13,000 votes) : kicking a ball, bicycle kick, save from a goalkeeper on his line, volley, taking the ball on the chest, free kick shot into the top corner, rabona kick, rainbow kick, flick-on and attitude of a player who just scored a goal.
These different actions were designed by graphic artist and illustrator Tomasz Usyk (based in Ireland), specializing in sports actions, and I admit that the result is very successful, respecting, icing on the cake, a perfect parity !

On the 3 stamps above, the following actions are illustrated : flick-on (by a player looking like Louisa Necib, memberof the women's France football team), kicking a ball and and rabona kick.
This booklet is also special because it has a 3D augmented reality experience, to discover with a smartphone or a tablet, via the free app Moostik.
By scanning each stamp, you can thus visualize the gesture in action for 15 seconds, and the result is really bluffing !

EUROPA 2016 (Smaoinigh Glas!) stamp set on cover from Ireland

A big thank you Declan for this nice letter sent on May 18, 2016 from Dublin, franked with the EUROPA series issued on May 12, 2016 by the Irish Post !
The Irish Post has of course put into circulation a stamp (€ 0.70, print run : 122,000) reproducing the joint design chosen by PostEurop to celebrate this year the 60th anniversary of the issue of the first EUROPA stamps, devoted to the theme of Ecology in Europe through the slogan "Think Green" ("Smaoinigh Glas" in Irish Gaelic).
As a reminder, it is the project of the Cyprus Post (author : Doxia Sergidou) which was chosen for this joint stamp (among 24 projects), referring to the role and responsibility of man for a greener future.

These two stamps have been printed in France by Cartor Security Printing, each in sheetlets of 10 stamps.
The 2nd stamp of this series (€ 1.05, print run : 94,000), designed by the Red Dog Design agency, evokes a contemporary representation of one of the nicknames of Ireland, "the 40 shades of green's land" although it is a bit simplistic as this emerald island has many more wonders !
I rather like that stamp showing this gradient green colors in the form of 40 pixels.
To note the words "Tír an Iúir" on the postmark above, the name of a Dublin's suburb where is located a main postal sorting center, the other mention "BÁC" referring to the Gaelic name of Dublin ("Baile Átha Cliath").

Yeti on holiday in Kyrgyzstan - new KEP's stamp set and FDC

Merci beaucoup Iana !
To promote the touristic, cultural and historical potential of Kyrgyzstan, the Kyrgyz Express Post (KEP) has put into circulation on May 19, 2016 (in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism), a funny set of two stamps devoted to the theme of Legends of Kyrgyzstan and in particular to the Yeti.
To note that, for the first time in the short history of KEP, the second designated postal operator (the other one being the Kyrgyz Post) of Kyrgyzstan, this definitive series is the first to be printed on a self-adhesive paper, having a permanent use and with a relatively big print run (30,000 for each stamp).
This new series (artist : Ivanka Costru, design : Anastasia Pariniuc), printed in Moldova by Nova Imprim, appears on the official FDC below (print run : 400) sent by registered mail from Bishkek. Thank you very much Iana !

In this series, the Yeti (or "Abominable Snowman") is featured in two main tourist sites of the country, both located in the northeast region, not far from the border with Kazakhstan : Karakol ski resort (permanent rate "C" corresponding to an international standard mail up to 50g, currently 150 soms) and Issyk-Kul Lake (permanent rate "P" corresponding to an international registered mail up to 50g, currently 250 soms).
This lake is the second largest mountain lake in the world behind Lake Titicaca.
To note that these two stamps include a message (in English) printed with a special silver ink, respectively "Greetings from the Kyrgyz Yeti!" and "With Love from the Kyrgyz Yeti!".
I really like the FDC cancellation including the word "Yeti" as a footprint (the first sightings of Yeti footprints, looking like human footprints, by Europeans would date from 1905).

As a reminder, the Yeti is an anthropomorphic creature (more or less imaginary!) of the folklore of the Himalayan region especially in Nepal, India and Tibet, but also in Central Asian countries such as Kyrgyzstan where it is called "Kyik-Adam" or "Zhapaii-Adam".
KEP also put into circulation this series in a booklet (inside part above and cover below) in a limited print run (1,000), consisting of 4 stamps (2 of each).

On the cover above, the Yeti is skiing near the resort of Kapriz Karakol (same illustration on the FDC).
To note that Bhutan Post also issued stamps in the past devoted to the Yeti, in particular a series of triangular stamps in 1966.

The art of preparing and tasting tea in Taiwan

On May 5, 2016, the Chunghwa Post has released a new series of three stamps depicting old paintings (as hanging scrolls), preserved in the National Palace Museum in Taipei, devoted to the art of making and tasting tea.
As a reminder, this Museum is considered the largest in the world for Chinese art (calligraphy, paintings, bronzes, ceramics...), with in particular a large part of the collections of the Imperial Palace of the Forbidden City in Beijing.
Thank you very much George for this nice cover (First Day envelope) franked with the 3 stamps of this series (each printed in sheet of 18 stamps), sent the first day of issue from this museum's post office.

The first stamp (NT $ 5) reproduces the left side of a work "Grinding tea" by Liu Songnian, painter of the Song Dynasty (960-1279). This painting depicts two men grinding tea and preparing it with a teapot.
The following stamp (NT $ 15) shows a scene entitled "Lu Tong brewing tea" by painter Qian Xuan, also of the Song Dynasty. Lu Tong refers to a poet of the Tang Dynasty.
This work shows a typical scene with scholars discussing literature while tasting tea, prepared here from reddish clay Yixing teapots.
The last stamp (NT $ 25) reproduces a painting by Wen Zhengming of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), showing two characters talking while drinking tea under an elegant thatched hut.

700 years of the birth of Charles IV and Svitavy-Polička railway in Czech Rep.

Merci beaucoup Slavek !
I've already mentioned several times on this blog the celebrations of the 700th anniversary of the birth of Charles IV (1316-1378), King of Bohemia and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, through the souvenir sheet or the special postmark issued by the Czech Post on this occasion.
That same postmark (design : Jan Kavan) put into circulation from 14 to 20 May 2016 by the main post office of Prague 1, featuring the crown of King Charles IV with the mention "700th anniversary of the birth of Charles IV" ("700. výročí narození Karla IV"), was applied on May 14, 2016 on this nice letter. Thank you very much Slavek !

The stamp (3 CZK) used in 2 copies above is the first stamp, issued on January 20, 1993, just after the independence of Czech Republic. Designed and engraved by Josef Hercík, it features the small coat of arms of the country with the Bohemian silver crowned lion on a red crest.
The motto of the country "Pravda vítězí" ("Truth prevails"), inscribed on the banner of the President of the Czech Republic, is also included at the top on that stamp.
To note also that additional vignette on the left to reach the current postal rate (27 CZK) to send a letter up to 50g to Europe.

About the souvenir sheet issued on May 4, 2016 to commemorate the 700th anniversary of the birth of Charles IV, I had mentioned on this blog this printing error regarding the words "Charles IV" in Latin in the lower left margin : "KAROLUS QUATRUS" instead of "KAROLUS QUARTUS".
The Czech Post had decided to reprint 35,000 souvenir sheets with the revised mention "KAROLUS QUARTUS".
The Czech Post had also put into circulation a numbered commemorative sheet (Pamětní list, print run : 3,500) including that sheet's stamp and two vignettes, with the FDC cancellation from Prague.
Bret was kind enough to send me a new copy of that commemorative sheet above (print run ?) with also with the corrected mention "KAROLUS QUARTUS" at the bottom left !

Bret also sent me this other numbered sheet above (print run : 1,800 - numbered between 0142501 and 0144300) issued to mark the 120th anniversary of the railway line between Svitavy and Polička, in the Pardubice region.
This 19km-long line was completed in 1896 and continued in the direction of Žďárec u Skutče in 1897 (53km in total).
The postmark from Svitavy above (design : Eva Chlubnová) was put into circulation on May 21, 2016 in a special post office located in a train on the railway line Česká Třebová - Svitavy - Květná - Čachnov.
The stamp above was issued on May 6, 2015 to celebrate the 130th anniversary of another railway line linking the cities of Most and Moldava (north-west of the country).

Route of Santiago de Compostela - FDC from Spain

According to UNESCO (World Heritage inscription in 1993), the Spanish part of the Route of Santiago de Compostela ("Camino de Santiago") is a narrow route through the north of the Iberian Peninsula extending over 800 km from the Spanish-French border to the city of Santiago de Compostela, passing through five different Autonomous Communities and over one hundred inhabited towns.
This Route was originally (in the Middle Ages) a religious pilgrimage route culminating in the visit to the tomb of St. James the Apostle (source mentioning his presence in Spain dating from the 6th century) in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela (Galicia).
This pilgrimage then fell into disuse and it was not until the late 19th century, with the printing of the last book of the Codex Calixtinus, that it was rediscovered and especially the French routes leading to Santiago.

On April 25, 2016, the Spanish Post released a nice stamp (permanent tariff "B" for a shipment up to 20g to Europe, € 1.15 currently) devoted to this "Camino de Santiago".
Thank you very much Luis for this official FDC regarding that stamp, sent from Madrid on May 20, 2016 !
To note the FDC cancellation from Santiago de Compostela here, the preview sale of that stamp also took place in Madrid and Barcelona.
The symbol of this pilgrimage, the scallop shell, is included on this cancellation (with a pair of walking shoes) as well as on the illustration on this envelope (pilgrim's back) and on the stamp featuring the facade of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela on a green background reminding that much of this route is located in rural areas.
Many stamps were issued in Spain on this topic (the first ones in 1937 devoted to the Compostela Jubilee Year) but also in France with four souvenir sheets issued from 2012 to 2015 (the four main roads in France leading to Santiago de Compostela being also included in the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1998).

EUROPA 2016 (Think Green!) stamp on cover from Monaco

Happy to share with you this letter sent on May 31, 2016 from Monte Carlo, franked with the EUROPA stamp issued on May 9, 2016 (Europe Day) by the OETP of Monaco.
That stamp (€ 1.00, print run : 50,000) was printed in a sheetlet of 10 stamps with the mention (in French) "Ecology in Europe, think green ! Theme of the Europa 2016 contest" and the Europa logo in the margins.
It is the stamp in the lower right part of that sheetlet (with the logo EUROPA and plate block dated 02/02/16 in the margin) which was used on this envelope.

To note that pictorial cancellation evoking the Formula 1 Grand Prix held in Monaco on May 29, 2016, denaturing a little bit that stamp IMHO (I would have preferred a classic round postmark...).
The black cachet in the lower left on this envelope (various monuments of Paris) was put into circulation by the OETP of Monaco during the last stamp exhibition "Paris-Philex".
As a reminder, a joint design (author : Doxia Sergidou / Cyprus Post) was chosen by PostEurop to be reproduced on the EUROPA stamps issued this year, as part of the celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the issue of the first CEPT-EUROPA stamps.
Unless I'm mistaken, I think Monaco is the only postal administration having mentioned on that stamp this year's EUROPA theme, "Ecology in Europe - Think Green !" (in French) in its entirety.

The years 1970s in France - new souvenir sheet

After a first souvenir sheet devoted to the years 1950s issued in 2014 and a 2nd one dedicated to the years 1960s issued in 2015, the French Post has released on May 23, 2016 (general sale) a 3rd souvenir sheet devoted this time to the years 1970s.
It is that souvenir sheet (print run : 700,000) consisting of 6 stamps (€ 0.80 each) that was used on the first day cover below with cancellations dated May 21, 2016 from Paris (preview sale at the "Carré d'Encre" and during the philatelic exhibition Paris-Philex).
As with the previous two ones, Stéphane Humbert-Basset designed this new souvenir sheet (he was kind enough of sign on this sheet's left margin !) as well as the FDC postmark (flower).

After the period of the "Trente Glorieuses" (the thirty years following the end of WWII), a new era began in France where people wanted to live better and have fun.
The different themes illustrated by these 6 stamps well symbolize this period through leisure activities (party with disco music), automobile through the Renault R5 model that became very popular, fashion (pair of flares, printed and very colored dresses), television (with the show for youth "L'île aux enfants", aired between 1974 and 1982), the democratization of holiday winter sports ("Les Arcs 1600" resort here) or sports with particularly the Parisian football stadium "Parc des Princes", dating from 1972.

UEFA European Championship 2016 - FDC from Romania

On June 10, 2016, the day of the opening match (between France and Romania) of this 15th edition of the European Football Championship ("Campionatul European de Fotbal" in Romanian) currently held in France, the Romanian Post has released a series of 4 stamps devoted to this competition.
The highest value of this stamp set (L 16) was used on this very successful illustrated first day cover below, sent by registered mail from Bucharest. Thank you very much Mihnea !
These 4 stamps (design : Vlad Vămăşescu) have been printed each in sheet of 32 stamps (print run : 35,200) but also in sheetlets composed of 5 stamps + 1 vignette (print run : 20,600).

This stamp issue comes to greet the fifth participation of the Romanian team in this competition (best result : quarter-final in 2000), with a focus on the group stage, Romania playing in the Group A with France, Switzerland and Albania (the flags of these four countries are featured on that stamp).
The four stamps in this series are featuring game actions with players wearing the traditional Romanian (yellow) jersey, the vignettes mentioning the teams in this Group A as well as places and dates of these three group matches.
Unfortunately, with only one point, Romania just finished at the last place of this Group A and is already eliminated from the competition (the final will be held on July 10, 2016)...
To note that the Albanian Post and the French Post (normal!) also issued stamps devoted to this Euro 2016 in France.

LISA ATM stamps from "Paris-Philex 2016" stamp exhibition

On the occasion of the last Philatelic Exhibition "Paris-Philex" held in Paris from 19 to 22 May 2016, La Poste released two new LISA ATM stamps, each available in two different printing modes (LISA 1 non thermic paper and LISA 2 thermic paper).
I was lucky to receive the two covers below respectively sent on 21 and 22 May 2016, franked with the "LISA 1" (tariff "Priority Letter" - € 0.80) and "LISA 2" (tariff "Ecopli" - € 0.68) versions of these two vignettes !

The LISA 1 above to the right (print run : 30,000 for each printing type), with mention "Paris-Philex 2016", was designed by Pierre-André Cousin (his signature under the LISA) from stamp photos of the French Postal Museum in Paris.
This LISA reproduces different stamps issued in France on the occasion of the "Journée du Timbre" or "Stamp Day" (from left to right) : "Louis XI creator of the State Post" (1945, designed and engraved by Raoul Serres), "Rural postman in 1830" (1968, designed and engraved by Pierre Béquet), "Postman of the little Post of Paris in 1760" (1961, designed and engraved by Raoul Serres) and "Postman in town c. 1830" (1970, designed and engraved by Pierre Béquet).
To note the special postmark associated with this LISA featuring the postal messenger on horseback to the right on the stamp "Louis XI creator of State Post".

The other LISA, to the left on the 2nd letter above (thank you very much Rémi !) is dedicated to the 89th Congress of the FFAP (French Federation of Philatelic Associations) and to the beautiful Place des Vosges, the oldest square in Paris.
I've already mentioned this Place des Vosges through the stamp issued also during this Paris-Philex stamp exhibition.
This LISA (print run : 20,000 for each printing type), depicting a part of the buildings on this square (in particular the "Pavillon de la Reine" ?), was designed by Arnaud d'Aunay while the associated cancellation (that square's arcades) was designed by Claude Perchat who also signed on the first envelope above.

"The Bartered Bride" comic opera, Cranach's altarpiece and Fairy Amalka on Czech cover

Merci beaucoup Bret !
On May 18, 2016, the Czech Post has released three new stamps  respectively dedicated to a work of Lucas Cranach the Elder (38 CZK), part of the collections of the Prague Castle, the animated television character "Fairy Amalka" ("A") and the 150th anniversary of the comic opera "The Bartered Bride" by Czech composer Bedřich Smetana (16 CZK).
I'll write in more detail about these last two stamps in a future article.
These three new stamps were used to frank this nice letter sent by registered mail from Prague on the first day of issue. Thank you very much Bret !

To note the special postmark (design : Jan Kavan) put into circulation from 14 to 20 May 2016 by the main post office of Prague 1, featuring the crown of King Charles IV with the mention "700th anniversary of the birth of Charles IV" ("700. výročí narození Karla IV").

Regarding the stamp dedicated to Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553), Bret was kind enough to send me also the official FDC (print run : 3400) above as well as the First Day Sheet below.
That stamp (engraved by Miloš Ondráček), printed in sheetlet of 4 stamps, reproduces the right part of an altarpiece painted in 1520 by German Renaissance painter and engraver Lucas Cranach the Elder, showing a portrait of St. Barbara (the left part of that work representing St. Catherine).
Lucas Cranach the Elder, official painter to the court of Saxony from 1505 until his death, adhered to the ideas of the Reformation from 1517. He painted several portraits (including his friend Martin Luther or Charles V), made engravings illustrating biblical scenes and altarpieces serving the ideas of the Reformation.

Ora virgotuos ille pane celi dignos effici".
The FDC cancellation (as well as the engraving to the left on the FDC) represents the coat of arms of Lucas Cranach the Elder (a winged serpent with a ring) that his patron, the powerful Elector of Saxony Frederick the Wise, permitted him to use in 1508.
For Latin lovers, here is the text on the scroll held by St. Barbara on this painting : "Barbaro populo manna verum in tuo sanctissimo utero mater beatissima c[on]fecisti. Ora virgotuos ille pane celi dignos effici".

I had already written on this blog about the EUROPA stamp (€ 1.15, print run : 80,000) issued this year (on April 22, 2016) by the Spanish Post in the Principality of Andorra.
Nearly a month later (on May 20), the EUROPA stamp of the French Post in Andorra was put into circulation in the Principality and during the philatelic exhibition "Paris-Philex".
It is that stamp (€ 1.00, print run : 50,000) which appears on this FDC, with a cancellation (human face and leaf) designed by Joan Xandri.

This year's theme is devoted to Ecology in Europe through the slogan "Think Green" ("Pensar en verd" in Catalan, as mentioned on that stamp).

Tribute to great Korean scientists - Science in Korea (2nd part)

Merci beaucoup Ji-Ho !
After a first series (3 stamps) issued in 2015 devoted to three eminent scientists of the 20th century, Korea Post has released, on April 21, 2016, a second series (3 stamps also) on the theme of "Science in Korea".
Three scientists from different periods of country's history, Jang Yeong-sil, Heo Jun and Ree Taikyue, are in the spotlight this year, all inductees of the Korea Science and Technology Hall of Fame, three "distinguished scientists and engineers who brought honor to Korea"...
I was lucky enough to receive the various covers below regarding this series, with special cancellations from Busan. Thank you very much Ji-Ho !

These 3 stamps (300 won, print run : 233,334 each) have been printed by Cartor Security Printing in a unique sheet consisting of 18 stamps (6 of each).
Designed by Shin Jaeyong, these stamps include pictograms (printed with a silver hot foiling), referring to the works of these scientists, also featured on the different postmarks.
The upper right part of this sheet (with the 3 se-tenant stamps in this series) was used to frank the first letter above, with a cancellation including these 3 pictograms.
Jang Yeong-sil (1390-1450) was a Korean inventor of the early Joseon period (reign of King Sejong) known for his improvements to water clocks, providing them with automata moving each hour. He also designed a celestial globe, sundials, developed the use of rain gauge, improved water storage for dry periods.

These 3 same stamps were used in 2 copies on the other 3 covers above, with postmarks of May 2, 2016, different for each stamp (scientist's portrait + pictogram).
Heo Jun (1539-1615) was a Korean physician of the Joseon Dynasty (reign of King Seonjo) having written numerous medical books and in particular Dongui Bogam ("Mirror of Eastern Medicine"), often referred to as the text defining Korean traditional medicine. Korean people still refer today to Heo Jun's natural remedies.
Ree Taikyue (1902-1992) was an internationally renowned theoretical chemist who worked in Korea at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) but also in Japan and the USA (University of Utah). He founded the Korean Chemical Society (KCS) in 1946 and earned international recognition for his outstanding papers including one on the "Ree-Eyring Theory".
