Postcrossing/Pos-Silang stamp set on FDC from Malaysia

After Belarus, Romania, Indonesia, Switzerland and Ireland, Malaysia also put into circulation some Postcrossing stamps in 2017, becoming (unless I am mistaken) the 18th postal administration having issued stamps on this topic since 2011 (about forty stamps issued in total).
As a reminder, Postcrossing is a project created in 2005, allowing its members to send and receive postcards (from random people) from all over the world.
To date, this website includes about 702,665 members from 213 different countries or territories (about 44 million cards received), but is rather confidential in France with only 13,668 members (5,383 members in Malaysia, 357,326 cards sent).

On October 9, 2017, the World Post Day (the logo is present on this series), the Malaysian Post has put into circulation 2 sets of se-tenant stamps (4 stamps at 50 sen, the price for a postcard sent abroad) with the mention "Pos-Silang", the name of Postcrossing in Malay.
Thank you very much Khor for this nice official FDC about this complete series, with cancellations from Kuala Lumpur!
To note also these two different cachets applied on this envelope, evoking the 5th postcrossing meetup in Malaysia, organized the same day in the main post office (GPO) of the Malaysian capital.
These 4 stamps illustrate, around a globe with a map of Malaysia, the different stages of Postcrossing (writing, sending, receiving and repeating).
I like the illustration on the left on this envelope symbolizing a postcard exchange between a resident of Kuala Lumpur (with Petronas towers) and a Dutch woman (with an orange mill), a nod to the Netherlands it seems, as it was the first country to issue Postcrossing stamps in 2011!

The first letter boxes would have been installed in Paris in the middle of the 17th century and then from 1829 throughout France, in 1809 in Great Britain...
On the territory of the current Czech Republic, the first mailboxes were installed in 1817 following an imperial decree (the country was part of the vast Austro-Hungarian Empire) stipulating that at least one mailbox should be present in each post office.
This decree also provided that the addressees of the letters had to pay the postage, and therefore that the sender no longer had to deposit his letters at a post office counter.

On October 4, 2017, the Czech Post put into circulation a new stamp (16 CZK), designed by Pavel Sivko and engraved by Bohumil Šneider, dedicated to the 200th anniversary of these first letter boxes in the territory.
That stamp is present on the official FDC above (print run: 4,000) with cancellatrion from Prague. Thank you very much Bret!
These mailboxes spread widely from 1850 following the introduction of the first stamps in the Empire (with mention "KK Post-Stempel").
The yellow box on the left on that stamp dates from this period, with the imperial emblem (two-headed eagle) in the center, the blue box dating from interwar Czechoslovakia, with the presence of a red-and-white line and the national coat of arms.

That stamp was printed in a sheet of 30 stamps as well as in a booklet (inside above, cover below) consisting of 8 stamps and 4 coupons, printed in 20,000 copies.
These coupons also represent mailboxes dating from the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Czechoslovakia in the early 20th century.
I really like the cover of this booklet below with these hands holding letters and this orange contemporary mailbox (appeared from 1963).

As usual, Bret also sent me the commemorative First Day sheet below regarding this same stamp.
Finally, to note that this stamp includes the mention "Praga 2018", the next international philatelic exhibition organized from 15 to 18 August 2018 in the Czech capital.

50 years of Organised Philatelic Movement in Moldova - special prepaid card

On the occasion of the World Post Day, celebrated around the world every 9th of October (on the initiative of the UPU), the Post of Moldova has put into circulation this year a prepaid postcard dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Organised Philatelic Movement in Moldova ("Mișcarea filatelică moldovenească organizată").
I do not know exactly what this anniversary is referring to, maybe the creation of the first philatelic association in 1967?
Designed by Maria Maximenco, this card (print run: 1,000, selling price: L 4.00) is composed of a pre-printed stamp (L 1.30 - current price for domestic "simple" postcard) including 2 pages of an album, one on the left representing 5 stamps issued in USSR having Moldova for topic and one on the right showing some stamps issued by the Post of Moldova since independence in 1991.

Thank you very much Nicolae for this nice card, with its First Day cancellation of October 9, 2017 from Chişinău (MD-2012)!
The illustration on the left shows various philatelic documents issued by the Post of Moldova since 1991: maxicards, FDCs, postcards, prepaid envelopes and cards...
To note this mention "Vâ invitâm în lumea filateliei!" meaning "We invite you to the world of philately!", what a good idea!
On October 9, 2017, another postmark (applied above to the left of the stamp) was put into circulation on the occasion of the Letter Week ("Săptămâna scrisorii"), held from 9 to 14 October 2017.
Postmarks dedicated to this Letter Week had already been issued in the past, from 1994 to 2011 and then in 2013 and 2014.

We can see these 3 different cancellations on the back of this card above.
Nicolae used another stamp (L 12.00) on the back of this envelope above, being part of a series (2 stamps) designed by Ralf Vogel and issued on November 21, 1992, devoted to the admission of Moldova to the UN.
Like all stamps issued in Moldova between June 23, 1991 and August 2, 1993, these stamps were denominated in rubles. On February 1, 2006, these stamps were put back into circulation with a Lei nominal value.

100th anniversary of the U.S. entry into WWI - special French LISA

The French Post had already issued (on June 23, 2017) a stamp dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the United States of America's entry into World War I.
On September 29 and 30, 2017, a new French ATM stamp "LISA" was put into circulation on the same theme, in two cities in the Meuse department (55), Gondrecourt-le-Château and Saint-Mihiel (also in Bar-le-Duc?).
Designed by Sophie Beaujard from a photograph (from the "National Archives and Records Administration") showing American volunteer soldiers in France in 1917, this LISA (print run: 20,000, "Priority Letter" rate here) only available in "LISA 2 thermic paper 2" version, was used on the letter below, with special postmark from Gondrecourt-le-Château of the first day of issue. Thank you very much Joël!

This LISA also includes a portrait of General Pershing (to the right), commander-in-chief of the American Expeditionary Force in France during the World War I. French and American flags complete this ATM stamp.
To counter the "submarine warfare" of the Germans against American ships responsible for supplying Europe, US President Wilson formally declared war to Germany on April 6, 1917.
This first American military engagement in Europe (on the Eastern front mainly, from September 1918), breaking then with US isolationist policy, concerned more than 4,350,000 soldiers, more than 120,000 having been killed and 250,000 wounded.
On July 10, 1917, the 1st American Infantry Division, nicknamed The Big Red One, arrived in the Gondrecourt-le-Château sector, in a training camp, and was the first US unit to be deployed on French soil.

"Historical postal signs" personalized stamps on Czech postal stationeries

My Own Stamp" ("Mon propre timbre").
On September 6, 2017, the Czech Post put into circulation a series of 5 pre-personalized stamps devoted to the theme of historical postal signs ("Historické poštovní štíty").
As a reminder, these stamps are considered as "Vlastní známka" or "My Own Stamp". It is a service allowing Czech collectors to create their own stamps, the same type as the "MonTimbraMoi" service proposed by the French Post for example.
These 5 round self-adhesive stamps (domestic rate "A" for a shipment up to 50g - 16 CZK currently), designed by Karel Dvořák, have been printed in a same sheet of 25 stamps (5 of each, print run: 20,000 sheets).

I was lucky to receive these 5 postal stationaries (standard type - domestic rate "A" - postal horn) each including one of these 5 personalized stamps, sent the first day of issue from the main post office of Prague 1. Thank you very much Bret!
The two stamps above feature postal signs dating respectively from 1937 and 1919 with the mentions "Poštovní úřad" ("postal office") with Bohemian lion and Slovak double cross, and "Č.S. Poštovní a telegrafní úřad" ("Czechoslovakia postal and telegraph office") with coat of arms including emblems of Bohemia, Slovakia, Silesia and Moravia.

The same mention "Poštovní úřad" (also in German here - "Postamt") appears on the sign above to the left, dating back to 1920, a Bohemian lion and a crown made of lime tree branches being represented on the sign on the right, dating from 1919.

The last stamp of the series above represents a postal sign with mention "Poštovní a telegrafní úřad" dating from 1918, the year of independence of Czechoslovakia, and also the emblems of Bohemia, Slovakia, Silesia and Moravia.

The complete sheet above in which these 5 stamps were printed, with an illustrated upper margin reproducing an old photograph showing postal employees (I do not know exactly from which period it dates...).
Finally, to note that these 5 stamps include the mention "Praga 2018", the next international philatelic exhibition organized from 15 to 18 August 2018 in the Czech capital.

30th anniversary of the Cultural Routes on new Council of Europe's stamp

The Cultural Routes program was launched by the Council of Europe in 1987 with the Declaration of Santiago de Compostela.
According to the Council of Europe, "These Routes are an invitation to travel and to discover the rich and diverse heritage of Europe by bringing people and places together in networks of shared history and heritage... and put into practice the values of the Council of Europe: human rights, cultural diversity, intercultural dialogue and mutual exchanges across borders".
More than 30 Cultural Routes provide today a wealth of leisure and educational activities for all citizens across Europe and beyond and are key resources for responsible tourism and sustainable development.

These Cultural Routes cover a range of different themes, from architecture and landscape to religious influences, from gastronomy and intangible heritage to the major figures of European art, music and literature.
On October 13, 2017, a new stamp of the Council of Europe was put into circulation to celebrate these 30 years of Cultural Routes. Thank you very much Olivier for this great First Day Cover concerning that stamp (€ 1.10, print run: 250,000)!
To note the usual FDC cancellation from Strasbourg, including the 12 stars of the European flag (different from the logo of the Council of Europe).
That stamp evokes some of these Routes such as the Santiago De Compostela Pilgrim Routes (the first Route created in 1987), the Routes of the Olive Tree (2005), the Prehistoric Rock Art Trails (2010, Cave of Altamira,Spain here) and the Cluniac Sites in Europe (2005).
As a reminder, the Council of Europe has (since 1958) its own so-called "service" stamps, including the mention "France" (and printed by Phil@poste).

Mexico-Jamaica joint stamp set in 2016 : Butterflies

On March 18, 1966, Mexico and Jamaica formally established diplomatic relations, four years after Jamaica's independence.
The two countries have since had common positions on many regional issues, within the framework of the Organization of American States or the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, particularly in advocating for the normalization of relations with Cuba.
For 50 years, the two countries have close relations in many fields (trade, culture, tourism, science, transport...) and have respective embassies in Mexico City and Kingston.

To commemorate these 50 years of diplomatic relations, the postal administrations of the two countries put into circulation, on October 28, 2016, a nice joint series of two stamps, dedicated to emblematic butterfly species from Mexico and Jamaica.
A big thank you Cecy for this official First Day cover with red cancellation from the city of Hermosillo (capital of the state of Sonora), located in northwestern Mexico, regarding this joint set of 2 stamps (7 and 11.50 Pesos)!
The Monarch (Danaus plexippus) depicted on the stamp to the right, is well known, particularly for its large-scale migrations when millions of individuals move over distances of up to 4,000 km between North America and Mexico.
The other stamp shows a Jamaican swallowtail (Papilio homerus), belonging to the family of Papilionidae comprising about 570 species in the world, among the largest butterflies, such as this one, the largest of the American continent, endemic to Jamaica.
This butterfly, a symbol of Jamaica (present on stamps and banknotes) is a threatened and protected species in the country.

"30th Anniversary of Cross-Strait Exchanges" stamp set on FDC from Taiwan

These Cross-Strait relations refer to the relations between mainland China, located west of the Taiwan Strait, and Taiwan, to the east, and their respective governments, the People's Republic of China and the Republic of China (Taiwan).
As a reminder, when the Chinese civil war turned in favor of the Communists, the government of the Republic of China, led by the Kuomintang, withdrew in 1949 to Taiwan, while the Chinese Communist Party proclaimed the People's Republic of China in Beijing.
Since this decision, relations between the two shores are strained, Beijing considering Taiwan as part of China and only 20 countries in the world having officially diplomatic relations with Taiwan.

Up Creative Design and Advertising Corporation, tirage : 800000 chacun).
Despite these tensions, the two entities chose in 1987 to authorize family reunions between the two banks of the Strait (measuring about 180 km).
In order to celebrate these 30 years of Cross-Strait exchanges, the Chunghwa Post of Taiwan put into circulation, on September 20, 2017, a series of 2 stamps (design: Up Creative Design and Advertising Corporation, print run: 800,000 each).
These 2 stamps are present on the official FDC above. Thank you very much George!
The NT $ 9 stamp illustrates this Strait of Taiwan as well as the links (sea and air) and various types of relations between the 2 banks (postal, tourist, academic, financial), which one also finds on the special cancellation.

The NT $ 28 stamp was also used on the 2nd First Day cover above, representing a symbolic gateway over this Strait, with these different characters illustrating the types of relations between the two banks. To note this number "30" in the background containing a map of this Strait.
The postmark, different from the previous one, is featuring the elements of the stamp.

Maltex'17 Philatelic Exhibition - special postmark on cover from Malta

Change of logo and appellation concerning the philatelic exhibition "Maltex" (18th edition), organized this year by the Maltese Post (MaltaPost) from October 10 to 12, 2017 at the Casino Maltese in Valletta, the capital.
The Maltex appellation now also refers to a collectors' fair, not limited to stamps and philately.
During this exhibition, the Malta Post Philatelic Bureau offered to the public several documents : postcards, special covers, personalized stamps...
Silvan was kind enough to send me this special cover from "Maltex 2017". Thank you very much!
To note the hand postmark of the Philatelic Bureau at the right, dated October 10, 2017, as well as the special cancellation including the "Maltex 2017" logo, the dates and venue of this event.

On April 3, 2012, the Maltese Post had issued a set of 8 stamps entitled "Special Occasions", having the distinction of being printed with an attached customized label.
This is the case with the stamp (€ 0.37) on this letter, featuring a view of the southern coastline of the small island of Comino (located between the islands of Malta and Gozo) with to the right, St. Mary's Tower erected in 1618 by the Knights of St. John.
The attached label also reproduces the logo of this stamp exhibition "Maltex 2017" (selling price of that stamp + label : € 1.00).
For information, the postal rate corresponding currently to the shipment of a letter up to 30g to the zone A (including France) is € 0.59.
So Silvan therefore used a second stamp (€ 0.26) being part of a series of 3 stamps, issued on February 24, 2017, devoted to orchids, the species Orchis collina (or Anacamptis collina) here.
More than 40 different species of orchids have been recorded in Malta, many of them being protected by law and usually flowering between December and June.

On October 4, 2017, the Czech Post issued a stamp simply entitled "Family" ("Rodina" in Czech), representing a typical family, a father, a mother, a girl and a boy, riding a tandem bicycle.
Designed by Kristýna Valtrová and engraved by Bohumil Šneider, that stamp (16 CZK) appears on the official FDC below (print run: 3,400), with postmark from Prague (a lying dog with four-leaf clover). Thank you very much Bret!
The illustration on the envelope evokes another family (a couple with 3 children, a dog and a cat) under a camping tent.
Contrary to the 15 European countries (including 13 EU members) allowing same-sex marriage, Czech Republic has nonetheless recognized a form of civil union since 2006.

According to some social scientists, family is defined as a solidarity group of people related by marriage, blood or adoption, who have lived together for a long time and whose adult members are responsible for the upbringing of children.
In Czech Republic, the Civil Code (valid from 2014) stipulates that "family, parents and married couples enjoy special legal protection" without clearly defining family...

As usual, Bret also sent me the commemorative First Day sheet above regarding this same stamp.

A tribute to Jesuit Father Victor Dillard on FDC from France

On October 6, 2017, the French Post has put into circulation (First Day of Issue) a new stamp on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of the birth of Jesuit Father Victor Dillard (1897-1945), martyr and figure of the Resistance during the Second World War.
Created and engraved by Yves Beaujard, that stamp (€ 0.73, print run: 700,032) was designed from a photo of Victor Dillard (exchanging with a young American), with a view of the city of Blois (his hometown) in the background, especially the Jacques-Gabriel bridge over the Loire river and the Saint Louis Cathedral.
Thank you very much Joël for this first day cover regarding that stamp, with cancellation from Paris (designed by Claude Perchat from the same portrait), the preview sale having also taken place in Blois.

In 1915, Victor Dillard was a volunteer in the French army and became a lieutenant at age 21.
He then entered the Society of Jesus and was ordained a priest in 1931, also quickly becoming a chaplain to the young people and students of his city of Blois.
During the 2nd World War, he joined the army, was taken prisoner. He was then transferred to Germany but managed to escape during the trip and joined the free zone in Vichy.
When Nazis imposed the compulsory work service to French youth, Father Dillard decided to organize a clandestine chaplaincy for them in Wuppertal, Germany, where he pretended to be an electrician.
Betrayed and arrested as a Catholic cleric, he was interned at the Dachau concentration camp in November 1944 where he died on January 12, 1945, weakened by the disease and the atrocities of the camp...

Hospital "Timofei Moşneaga" 200th anniversary - prepaid envelope from Moldova

On December 26, 1817, the first medical institution of Bessarabia, with the support of sponsors and citizens, was officially inaugurated in Chişinău.
Named Gubernial Hospital in 1870 (capacity of 100 beds), this institution suffered heavy damage after bombing during the two World Wars. It was rebuilt and named "Republican Clinical Hospital" and is today the most important medical institution of Moldova, with nearly 800 beds, 12 units and 1,300 qualified specialists.
On October 6, 2017, the Post of Moldova has put into circulation its 9th prepaid envelope this year, dedicated to the 200th anniversary of this Republican Clinical Hospital ("Spitalul Clinic Republican"), named after physician and public figure Timofei Moşneaga this year.
Thank you very much Nicolae for sending this envelope with its FDC cancellation from Chişinău (MD-2025)!

Timofei Moşneaga (1932-2014) was director of this hospital between 1960 and 2003 and was minister of health between 1994 and 1997.
The emblem of this hospital and its Latin motto "Lucendo allis ego ipse ardeo" ("By teaching others, I myself become educated") is featured on the stamp (L 1.75) on this envelope (design: Vitaliu Pogolşa, print run: 10,000, selling price: L 3.50).
The mention IMSP ahead the name of the hospital means "Instituţiei medico-sanitare publice" ("Public health care institution") and is used to qualify the many medical institutions of the country, under the supervision of the Ministry of Health.
To note this additional postmark applied the same day by the CPTP ("Centrul de Prelucrare şi Transportare a Poşte", "Postal processing and transport centre") of Chişinău, SPS meaning "Secţia Poşta Scrisori" ("Mail section").

One of the New7Wonders of the World on new stamp from Spain : Machu Picchu

After the Great Wall of China, the ancient Mayan city of Chichen Itza in Mexico and the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil in 2015, the Taj Mahal in India in 2016, the Spanish Post has put into circulation on September 14, 2017, a new stamp in its series devoted to the "New7Wonders of the world", this time with the Machu Picchu in Peru.
As a reminder, these 7 new wonders of the world were designated between 2000 and 2007 following a public vote organized by Swiss businessman Bernard Weber and the New7Wonders Foundation based in Zurich (in reference to the seven wonders of the ancient world).
To note that UNESCO had at the time immediately said there were no link between this project and the World Heritage List...

This new stamp (€ 1.35, print run: 240,000) issued in sheet of 12 stamps, was used on the nice letter above, sent from Barcelona on October 9, 2017 (the World Post Day). Thank you very much Josep!
Like the previous four stamps, that stamp has a panoramic shape with the country's flag in the background.
According to UNESCO (this site has been inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1983), the historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu, discovered in 1911 at 2,430 m above sea-level in the Andes, "was probably the most amazing urban creation of the Inca Empire at its height".
Built in the 15th century, Machu Picchu was abandoned when the Inca Empire was conquered by the Spaniards in the 16th century.
The last 2 new wonders of the world to be featured on the next stamps in this series : Petra in Jordan and the Colosseum in Rome, Italy.

Germany-Australia joint stamp issue : 200th birth anniversary of explorer Ludwig Leichhardt

Thank you very much Jens for this nice letter sent on October 9, 2017 (the World Post Day!) from the city of Bielefeld (North Rhine-Westphalia)!
Jens used the stamp (€ 0.75), issued on October 10, 2013 by the Deutsche Post, dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the birth of Prussian explorer and naturalist Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig Leichhardt (1813-circa 1848).
That stamp, which was a joint issue with Australia (different date of issue: October 15, 2013), is featuring a portrait of Leichhardt from a lithograph (dating from the mid-19th century) kept in the National Library of Australia in Canberra.

In Australia, Leichhardt is one of the most famous Germans, animal and plant species, mountain ranges or even a Sydney district bearing his name, while he remains little known in his own country...
Leichhardt arrived in Australia in 1842 to explore the interior of the island. He undertook three major expeditions from 1844 to 1848, the latter being a crossing of Australia from east (Condamine river) to west (Swan river).
Leichhardt and his team disappeared during this quest at McPherson's Station (no remains have ever been found) and then became part of Australia's mythology...
Jens also used above some stamps of the "flowers" definitive series still in progress (started in 2005), winter aconite (€ 0.10, issued on June 8, 2017) and phlox (€ 0.05, issued on April 13, 2017) here.

"Hello Maestro!" stamp on FDC from France

After "Once upon a time... Man" in 1978 and "Once upon a time... Space" in 1982, the television series "Once upon a time... Life" ("Il était une fois... la Vie" in French), dedicated to the discovery of the human body, appeared on the screens in France in 1987.
To celebrate the 30 years of this series "Once upon a time... Life" and its restored and HD version (broadcasted this year on "France 4"), a new stamp was put into circulation in France, entitled "Hello Maestro!", referring to the character of Maestro (a cell leader in this series), aged with his long beard, scholar, doctor and providing advice and care to the youngest.

That stamp (€ 0.73), printed in a sheet of 42 stamps (print run: 800,016) and in a sheetlet of 10 stamps (print run: 30,000 sheetlets) is present on the FDC above, with cancellations from Paris ("Carré d'Encre"). Thank you very much Joël!
That stamp (layout) as well as the cancellation were designed by Agence Absinthe, from drawings by Jean Barbaud (born in 1955), illustrator of the characters of this series, produced by the animation studio Procidis.
On that stamp, Maestro is featured in the company of Globin (often present on the TV screen with Hemo and Professor Globus, explaining the role of blood and red blood cells in the human body) and smaller bully ("Nabot" in the French series), illustrating the different viruses and effects of bad habits (smoking, alcohol, unbalanced diet...) on our body.

"Nulla dies sine linea" Latin locution on new Czech special postmark

Merci beaucoup Slavek!
On June 26, 2013, the Czech Post issued a surprising stamp (permanent 'E' rate - letter up to 50g sent to Europe, currently 32 CZK) dedicated to the 130th anniversary of the birth of the writer Franz Kafka (1883-1924 ).
I've already written about that stamp (designed by Marina Richterová) on this blog, whose motto is "injustice, timelessness and metamorphosis" in reference to the concepts developed in the major novels written by Kafka, considered as one of the greatest writers of the early 20th century.
It is that stamp that was used on the nice letter below sent from Prague on September 21, 2017. Thank you very much Slavek!

Marina Richterová also designed the special postmark above, put into circulation by the main post office of Prague 1, including the Latin phrase "Nulla dies sine linea" and an iris flower.
This locution, meaning "no day without a single line", would have been attested for the first time by the Italian writer Virgil at the beginning of the 16th century.
Many writers and artists have taken up this expression on their own, like Emile Zola, Jean-Paul Sartre, Stijn Streuvels or Paul Klee.
Often considered as a constraint or a curse by the writer, this phrase was also mentioned by Kafka who gave it a contemporary meaning, each "line" to be written being compared to an optical instrument back upon the author himself...

Sepac 2017 (local handcrafts) stamp on cover from Malta

Merci beaucoup Silvan !
As a reminder, the Small European Postal Administration Cooperation (SEPAC) is an association of small European postal administrations, created in 1999, in order to discuss various philatelic and postal issues specific to these small structures.
Since 2007 (theme : landscapes), stamps having a common theme are issued by some members (12 this year) and an election of the most beautiful Sepac stamp has been organized for the first time in 2010.
Malta has participated in these Sepac stamps since 2007 and issued, on June 28, 2017, its eighth Sepac stamp, whose theme this year is devoted to local handcrafts (seasons was the theme in 2016).
That stamp (€ 0.59, print run: 50,000), designed by Tony Calleja, including the Sepac logo on the top left, was used to frank the nice letter below, sent from the Malta Postal Museum in Valletta on October 7, 2017. Thank you very much Silvan!

That stamp is part of a series of 4 stamps devoted to local craftsmanship, a man handcrafting a typical bamboo fish trap (called "nassa") here.
The other stamps of the series show a carpenter building a boat, the art of weaving and "tberfil", a Maltese specialty of decoration of means of transport (old buses, truck or horse-racing sulkies).
To note this interesting postmark applied here, evoking the "Notte Bianca" ("White Night") festival taking place every year in October in the streets of Valletta.
Notte Bianca is the largest annual arts and cultural festival in Malta (concerts, exhibitions, dance, theater, monument lighting, cinema, museum and church visits), illuminating for a special night the urban landscape of Valletta with a spectacular celebration, free of charge for the public (more than 70,000 people this year!).
The Malta Postal Museum was open to the public during this 2017 Notte Bianca where Malta Post used the special postmark above.

150 years of the country - special stamps on cover from Canada !

Merci beaucoup Tristan !
The Canadian Confederation is the process initiated in 1867 by which the separate and autonomous British colonies of United Canada, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia united to form a dominion.
When the Constitution came into force on July 1, 1867, the colonies became collectively the Dominion of Canada.
On June 1, 2017, the Canadian Post commemorated the 150th anniversary of the creation of this Canadian Confederation by putting into circulation an original "Canada 150" series of 10 stamps (design: Subplot Design Inc.) in the shape of a maple leaf, the symbol of the country present on the national flag.
Three of these stamps (permanent domestic rate - $ 0.85 currently) were used to frank this nice letter sent on September 19, 2017 from the village of Fort Simpson in the Northwest Territories. Thank you very much Tristan!

Through this series, the Canadian Post has selected "10 truly iconic milestones and accomplishments from a wealth of social progress, innovation and other significant achievements that have positioned Canada as a vibrant and successful nation on the world stage", between 1967, the centennial year and today: Expo 67, Trans-Canada Highway, Summit Series, Marathon of Hope, Canadarm, Constitution, Nunavut, Marriage Equality, Olympic Games and Paralympic Glory.
The Summit Series (stamp above on the left) refers to the eight ice hockey games between Canada (and its professional players) and USSR (world and Olympic champions) in 1972 during the Cold War. Canada, thanks in particular to Paul Henderson (pictured on that stamp) won this series (4 wins, 1 draw, 3 losses).
The center's stamp is dedicated to the Marathon of Hope, an attempt to cross Canada in 1980 by Terry Fox (1958-1981), who lost his right leg after cancer, and who struggled to raise money for research against cancer.
This feat, which has marked Canadians, has already been the subject of stamps issues in 1982 and 2000.
The last stamp above is dedicated to the creation of the federal territory of Nunavut in 1999, the largest territorial entity in the country (a large part of the Arctic) but also one of the least populated.

These 10 self-adhesive stamps were issued in the same booklet (print run: 500,000), the two "Nunavut" and "Marriage Equality" stamps being also put into circulation in booklets consisting of 8 identical stamps (print run: 100,000 and 200,000).
