Slovakia-Turkey joint stamp issue: Bašagić’s Collection of Islamic Manuscripts

On November 27, 2018, the postal administrations of Slovakia and Turkey put into circulation a joint stamp (a first between these two countries) devoted to the theme of the extraordinary Islamic manuscripts of the Bašagić's Collection, preserved since 1924 in the University Library of Bratislava.

Safvet Beg Bašagić (1870-1934) was a writer, historian and linguist, director of the National Museum of Sarajevo and, after several elections, held the posts of Vice President and President of the Parliament of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
For over thirty years he has collected manuscripts and prints from all over the Balkans, mainly works by Yugoslav authors. He wanted to gather and preserve an image of Yugoslavian-Muslim literary heritage.
