"Dinan, France - Dinant, Belgium" stamp on FDC from France

Since the early 1950s, the two cities of Dinan in France (Brittany) and Dinant in Belgium (Wallonia), with a similar population (about 15000 inhabitants) have forged close ties and established one of the first twinning between European cities.
In addition to their almost identical names, the two cities are the birthplace of two great personalities, Bertrand du Guesclin (1320-1380), Constable of France and very important character of the first part of the Hundred Years War for Dinan, and Adolphe Sax (1814-1894), inventor of the saxophone for Dinant.
To remind the links between these 2 cities, the French Post has put into circulation, on February 18, 2019 (general sale), a stamp (€ 1.30, print run: 600,000) designed by André Lavergne, in a panoramic format mixing some of the main monuments of Dinan and Dinant.

That stamp is present on the First Day cover above, with cancellations from Paris of February 15, 2019. Many thanks Joël!
To note that the same postmark, lacking visibility in my opinion (Old Bridge of Dinan at the top, Charles de Gaulle bridge in Dinant at the bottom), was also released in Dinan (Côtes d'Armor).
Just like the postmark, I find this stamp very confusing, mixing the 2 cities with in the foreground, the Rance river for Dinan on the left and the Meuse river for Dinant on the right ...
This theme would have deserved the issue of 2 stamps and why not a France-Belgium joint set, a pity ...
Some old houses as well as the basilica Saint-Sauveur (built from the 12th century) illustrate the city of Dinan while the Collegiate Church of Our Lady (13th century) and the cable car used to climb to the citadel (1815-1818) represent Dinant to the right on the stamp.
A stamp had already been issued in France in 1961 devoted to Dinan and the Rance Valley.

Anonyme a dit…

Hello Eric, I’m Anna from Japan.
I liked the design of that stamp a lot and have been interested in its meaning since I received a postcard from my friend in France. Your blog was the only source written in English I could find and understand. Thank you for writing this article! It was very helpful:)
Regards, Anna
